- WHAT TO DO IN THE HAGUE - Visiting The Hague was full of surprises. I only knew it as the location of the International Criminal Court but there is so much more to see! It was a day of discovering all that The Hague has to offer.
We took the train from Rotterdam for a day trip to The Hague. We started our visit at Mauritshuis, a museum with a collection bursting with paintings by Dutch masters. We saw Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson, which is much larger than I thought it’d be. I had no idea he was only twenty-five when he painted this world-famous masterpiece in 1632. I can remember learning about it as a kid in school. The most famous painting in the museum, however, is Vermeer’s The Girl With A Pearl Earring. Before arriving in The Hague I didn’t know it was here! Arguably one of the most recognizable paintings in the entire world, it’s even more incredible in real life. Vermeer has been called the master of light and, when you see this painting, you immediately understand why. The girl has an inscrutable expression on her face, which reminds me of the Mona Lisa. Her eyes follow you as you walk back and forth across the room. To me it feels very contemporary even though it was painted in 1665. Seeing this was not only a highlight of The Hague but The Netherlands overall.
After Mauritshuis we headed to a gallery with a totally different artwork: Escher in Het Palais. It’s a gallery entirely devoted to the work of artists and graphic designer M.C. Escher. The building itself is part of the attraction because it’s the former winter palace of Queen Mother Emma of The Netherlands. Escher is well-known for his drawings that require a second look. He really plays with reality and it was interesting to see the progression of his art.
After seeing such different types of art we headed to the International Criminal Court. I couldn’t have visited The Hague without making a visit here because, to me, they’re inseparable. It’s a place where individuals who have been charged with genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity - the gravest of charges - come to be tried by the international community. There are public galleries where you can go and listen to open sessions to see what’s going on. There’s also an exhibition about the history of the ICC: why it exists, what it does, when it was formed, who it’s funded by, and who it serves. We learned a lot and I’m glad I got to see it.
Next we arrived at the pier - just in time for magic hour as the sun was going down. Everyone in The Netherlands told us that the beach and pier in The Hague is fabulous and a really popular spot, especially in the warmer months. There’s a large Ferris wheel, hotels, restaurants, shops, and lots of activities for children and families. It was lovely to see this other side of the city and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.
We were hungry and looking forward to a cozy dinner and a chance to warm up after spending the day looking around. We found exactly what we were looking for at Jamey Bennet, back in the city centre. The idea is that you order a bunch of plates and share them. Everything was delicious but our favourites were the ceviche, salmon sashimi and dessert. There was a fire and having a long leisurely dinner was the perfect way to top off the day.
I had such a great time visiting The Hague and loved discovering all the wonderful things you find there. So happy we got to see it all! Did anything take you by surprise? Leave a comment below and tell me!

I'd love to know - did anything in The Hague surprise you?
It was very modern, but most socialist countries are like that, everyone is a little robot under government control, LOL.I absolutely loved the museum and the old paintings. Id go there just for that, I love old paintings, and criminal courts? well lets just say that Id rather not ! lol
You could easily spend the whole day looking at old paintings and art in the museums! Mauritshuis has a lot more and there are other museums that we didn't get to make it to. :) I was surprised to learn that most people go there for the beach.
I agree, I could spend all day there for sure, I,m not a big beach person at all. Oh and I just saw your video of Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City, I was there in May of this year, and I did spend a long time there, it was fascinating , as was the park too, but yeh the paintings and the historical artifacts are more for me. Have a great day.
Cool! I absolutely LOVED visiting Mexico City. Good to hear you enjoyed the castle as well! The view from the top was fantastic and it was fun to see the park bustling with life on a Sunday afternoon.
You have a faulty view of the world, The Netherlands is not a "socialist" country, in fact they invented capitalism as we know it. Theyre hardly "little robots under government control" 0.o
Thank you for depicting The Hague in such a beautiful way! It's been my home for a very long time and I miss it loads now that I live abroad, so it was great revisiting my home through this video! Thank you!!!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the video and it brought good memories of home! We loved visiting 💕
That was so cool! Thanks for "taking" me along, you two!! 🥰
What a fantastic tour of The Hague. It's famous as location of the International Criminal Court but clearly has
lots more to offer. The art museum was awesome - what a thrill to see first hand such famous paintings. Love the music/song.
Perfect ending! Thanks once more for taking us along on your travels.
I'm glad you enjoyed seeing more of the city! I also love all the music in this video :)
I second everything Nancy said!
Thanks, Angie! We had such a fun time in The Hague :)
Beautifully done. Thank you.
I really love that you had such a good day in the city I have lived in for almost 20 years. I'm not sure you realized but when you were describing "the Girl with the Pearly Earing" you were standing 50 meters away from the prime minister's office, parliament and the "Binnenhof" which is basically the center of Dutch political power. You also missed arguably the best collection in the world of Mondriaan in the Gemeentemuseum and there are also really great contemporary art spaces like 1646, Nest, West, STROOM and Billytown. Next visit, you should definitely check them out ;)
Thanks for another fantastic video! I notice that you are putting up videos more frequently - and I really appreciate that the quality is still very high. I love the fact that you are able to focus on a few art pieces (or food items) and share your discovery, understanding and appreciation. Keep up the great work and safe travels!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate hearing that and having your support :) We're putting out three videos per week at the moment!
I just found this video today, and I have to admit that this is the most informative travel videos I've ever seen. The Hague is definitely on my list now!
That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you! :)
The guy they painted was actually a criminal (Adriaan Adriaanszoon) executed earlier that day. The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp. The other painting was by Johannes Vermeer he used a Camera Obscura the forerunner of the modern camera. The artist sat actually inside the camera the word relates to the Dutch word kamer which means room. And let the outside world be projected through a peephole directly on his canvas. He just traced the outlines and got his perspective absolutely spot on.
Nice video.Thanks.
I enjoyed so much when watching & had the feeling that i'm travelling with you. Especially ICC part was so interesting. From now on the Hague is on my list!
That makes me really happy to hear! Yeah, the ICC was fascinating to see and I was so glad we got to go. Hope you enjoy a trip there as well!
Loved this video!!
Hey Cynthia! Thank you! I’m happy to hear that ❤️
I don't think I had heard of the Girl With the Pearl Earring before. Thanks to your latest sensational vlog, that has changed :) Yes, those eyes are absolutely striking.
You two are on a roll. Can't get enough :)
Thanks so much, Scott!! That's so lovely to hear! :) Isn't it an incredible painting!? I had loved it before but didn't realize the eyes followed like that until seeing it in person. She's just so beautiful and the way he painted the light is, well, WOW.
rent the movie, the girl with the pearl earring. it is about the artist and the model
Great Vlog.. Thank you.. It is indeed a city full of surprises..
Thanks, Chris! It certainly is :)
Great video, there is a lot to love about The Hague! I visited a couple of years ago during October, there is a Japanese garden there that only opens a few weeks each year. It was really special. If I go back will definitely check out some more activities based on your vid - the Escher gallery looks really cool!
Thank you! Yes, there certainly is a lot to love. That Japanese garden sounds lovely and your timing must have been right on to see it. The Escher museum was cool, yeah. Upstairs they have a little set where you can pretend you're in one of the drawings and it feels all Alice in Wonderland where one person looks enormous and one person looks tiny. Couldn't film it, unfortunately, but don't miss it if you go as it was fun :)
Lovely video! well done!!
Hi Thomas! Thank you! Happy you enjoyed it :)
Great vlog of the highlights of Den Haag.
Thank you! So happy to hear you enjoyed the video! :)
Your videos are fantastic! Thanks for the subtitles, really help me to learn english. I am a brazilian that live in Italy.
Hi Keli! Thanks so much! Brazil is a place I'd love to visit and Italy is one of my favourite countries in the world :)
Great vid! Welldone!
Thank you!
Nice video !! The Hague is very beautiful and historicly amazing! It's history goes back to the twelve hundreds. a Piece of the binnenhof is still of that period and is still intact.
it (being the biggest village of Europe,
it never recieved city rights)
played a major role in the affaires and wars between the Republic of The Netherlands and England.
When stadholder (lets say president -it was the first republic in Europe with a complete different sociaty in all of Europe- William III became
king of England (there William ll) he brought architectual
and colonial experience to England.
He went from The Hague to England with hundreds of ships; almost didn't
have to fight because he was welcomed in as a protestant ruler.
This is why The Hague has a touch of
"brittishness".
Actualy it's the other way around....
Keep them comming !
dank u wel
Nice vid ! So maybe , if you ever return
you might visit the 'gemeentemuseum '
in The Hague where you find mondriaan and painters of 'The Hague school' (de Haagse school)
The Hague has,as you showed and mentioned, really a lot to offer.
Especially in the field of history !
Thanks a lot for that suggestion! That sounds like a place Marc and I would love to visit. So much more to see there :)
Did anything surprise me?? Yes! I didn’t know that Escher had a whole museum for his work alone!
…That The Hague is as famous for its beaches as its court! The city of justice and peace! How about the Friesian horses in the street!!
Royal buildings and old masters. I knew the, "Girl with the Pearl Earring" painting, only as a movie and a book…’Till now.
My bucket list grows longer. What was the music near the end? I loved it. Thank you for a most enlightening video!
Sounds like you were as surprised throughout the vlog as I was throughout the day! You noticed the horses - weren't they gorgeous? Girl With A Pearl Earring is honestly one of the most beautiful paintings I've ever seen in real life. There's something about it in person that doesn't translate unless you're right in front of it - I think it's Vermeer's subtle mastery of the light or the way the girl's eyes track you. Absolutely stunning. So happy you enjoyed the video! :)
Mark mcCurdy the frisian horses are usually from the royal stables and are used to pull the golden carriage.
Here are a couple of things you missed, that hopefully you'll be back to see the next time you visit The Hague. First and foremost is the time machine, otherwise known as The Panorama Mesdag. It's about 4 blocks from the Mauritshuis, and you can think of it as the 19th Century's answer to VR. You get to see the beach at Scheveningen on one perfect day in the 1890s. You emerge onto a bandstand, and you can see fishing boats on the North Sea, hear the cry of the gulls, and turn around to see The Hague in the distance. It's a really magical experience. The Garoeda restaurant (facing the Hofvijver (that pond in front of the Mauritshuis, this institution is on the left)). One of the best Indonesian restaurants you'll find. And lastly, Madurodam. It's a miniature version of the Netherlands complete with a miniature version of the Ritterzaal, Schiphol, trains, windmills, polders, canals, and much more. It's about 10 minutes by tram from Scheveningen, the beach town where you filmed part of the episode. If you plan your trip just right, and come back in 2022, you'll be in time to see Floriade, a once in a decade international flower show that stretches for miles in every direction.
dude, mauritshuis is there? i did not know that. i was in amsterdam and visited some good museums. i would have also visited mauritshuis for sure. one of the great museums
we are just planning a day trip here out of Rotterdam like you guys did... I feel like it will be so rushed to try and see everything, though we generally avoid eating up time in museums. definitely want to soak in the atmosphere of the beach though of course the weather conditions can be a bit hit and miss in the fall...
1:58. Girl with pearl earing. If you paint a picture of someone looking directly at you, the eyes will always follow you as you move! It's only in two dimensions.
Hi Tom! That's cool! I haven't noticed it so much with every painting but now I'm going to try it out. I think it's such a cool technique!
My place of birth! Thank you for doing such a well job on paying praise to The Hague! It is such an amazing and wonderful city with so much to discover ( have you been to the Binnenhof? That's where the parliament is seated)
And now you go off to the Efteling, please :-)
Thanks so much! You have an awesome hometown and we loved visiting. Didn't go to the Binnenhof, no, but maybe another time :)
Den Haag! I love that city.
We did too! :) Do you have a favourite part?
Eileen Aldis oh where do I begin. The pier, the peace palace, the fact that it's not so touristy like Amsterdam.
The house I live is was build 1683 but there are older buildings. The Hague is also the Beat or Rock & Roll town of The Netherlands.
Next time you really should visit the 'Peace Palace'. It's such a beautiful building on the in- and outside!
Thank you for the suggestion, Brian!
if i had only known about the paulus potter painting and the other paintings, i would have made a visit there
I just put the Hague on my the list because of this video :)
That's awesome! You'll have to let me know how you enjoy it :)
Loved your day! I have a question I am planning to go to the Netherlands in April I am wondering when you went did you have a central location and then just take the train for your day trips or did you move from hotel to hotel?
ANother great tour, thanks. (Torontonian here too, btw, and moving to NL In the near future). "Huis" isn't pronounced "Hoos", by the way. :)
Can someone please name the soundtrack that plays right after they talk about the beach at 06:28 runtime??
The music is from Audio Network.
0:24 four triangular UFO's!
The nickname for The Girl with the pearl is : The Mona Lisa of the north :)
I didn't know that but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing! :)
Girl with the Pearl Earring is so much better than the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa is only famous because someone stole it (next to the bathrooms) and it was returned later. Girl with the Pearl Earring didn't have to be stolen to be considered a masterpiece.
Also at The Hague: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_engine Rather than doing work on the dunes all the time we dropped a whole lot of sand downwind and let mother nature improve the dunes.
And ofc the only place where people ever ate their own prime minister.
Windy in Rotterdam lol what new it’s always windy in Rotterdam lol
Yep, we definitely experienced the wind :)
If you liked Den Haag give Dordrecht a look
Het Vredespaleis is worth a visit: the place of the Permanent Court af Arbitrage of the Leage of Nations, after WWII for the United Nations the International Court of Justice resided here.
Nice to see you guys enjoyed it.
My house is like 2 km from those places so to me its kinda normal:)
That's so cool! Your normal is lovely :)
You forgot the Panorama Mesdag, the Peace Palace and the great parks on The Hague
If only we'd had more time! All great suggestions for another visit :)
Next time you visit The Hague, write me an email. You need a real tour guide. You haven't seen half of what The Hague has to offer.
That's very kind - thanks, Paul!
whats the song called? Beautiful end
Thanks! Sorry, I don't remember.
Shame you missed the most beautiful building in the Hague …… het Vredespaleis or PeacePalace
hello do brasil
Hello! :)
My maiden name was Hague
Interesting! Is your background Dutch? Perhaps your name was anglicized along the line...?
@@EileenAldis l'm not sure. My parents didn't say much and l didn't think to ask way back then. I was told l was Irish, English and Dutch
My Dad said something about 5 brothers came to America way back from Holland and took the name of Hague.
Glad you enjoyed my city! Just as a little detail...keeping your hat on in a restaurant is a little rude...
rude but understandable. if you have terrible hair day, taking the hat off would be offensive. and rude i would say is better than offensive
Ekkennisinternasionalestratshof
It is Den Haag not the Haege!
Hi Joost, The video is in English so I used the English name.
Eileen Aldis I live in the Nederlands but i dit not now that the hague the english name was for Den Haag. I learned something today. Thanks for that!
Thanks, Joost! Glad to hear that :)
ER IS MAAR ÉÉN ROTTERDAM
MOOISTE STAD ACHTER DE DUINEN
Its not the beach of the hague. Its scheveningen...
Yes, I didn't say the name in the video.
Scheveningen is part of The Hague.
If you liked Den Haag give Dordrecht a look
Hi Jim! We went and watched speed skating in Dordrecht. It was fantastic and - quite conveniently - Canada took home the top prizes :) Must have been all that flag waving.
