    Love traveling with my Break-Away! It's a nice video, but a normal rear wheel is about 5 cm thicker (with free hub) so this packing strategy won't work well. I had to search elsewhere to figure out how to pack mine. The key is to pack the top tube/head tube/down tube frame section between the rear and front wheel. That frees up enough space on top for the rest. Once you figure out how to do it, take some pics at various stages of packing to jog your memory the next time you do it.

    This is so innovative! Not only good for planes, but also trains in Europe

    Letting air out of the tires to "prevent them from blowing off at elevation" is an urban myth that shouldn't be disseminated. Even if the plane flew into the vacuum of outer space, that would only be an extra 14.7 psi pressure differential. Sources including Sheldon Brown's page says maximum tire pressure is generally rated by manufacturers at about 50% of tested blow-off pressure. Unless your tires are rated at only 15 psi, I doubt you're going to come anywhere near blow-off pressure. A tire pumped to 100 psi will only be at 110 at normal cruising altitude, assuming an unpressurized cargo hold, and the fact is that airliner cargo holds actually are pressurized.

    Now isn't that something? I've seen a few Ritchey road bikes in the wild. But to see a bike frame be disassembled, put in a case...now I've lived! What I'd like to know is why don't other bike companies do the same? This idea makes total sense for someone who travels by plane, bus or train....right on.

    How does the case get to the airport? Not on the bike, it seems.

      Well, that obviously shows the overall use and flexibility. Where to store the bag after reassembling? Great idea for traveling with a bike AND an accommodation, not traveling on a bike.

    Completely different from how I do it. I have a 60cm titanium break away, it's a great travel bike. But in order, I put the frame front in the case, then the rear wheel, then the fabric sheet, then the rear triangle and finally the front wheel. I do not take out the fork.

      @c-record Před 4 lety +1

      yep, that's the correct way. if the wheels are put in next to each other like shown in this video, they can get bent out of true during airline baggage handling.

    @wesman83 Před 5 lety +4

    Good video! I've never removed the fork when packing my 60cm breakaway, I'm wondering if there is a reason (beyond ease of packing) that you included this step?

    • @wesman83
      @wesman83 Před 5 lety +3

      @@ritcheydesign Thanks for the reply! I'll probably continue to skip the fork removal for time savings ;-) I will add that once my bike was severely manhandled at the airport and the top tube punched a hole clear through the hard side of the case! Must have been dropped from high up but amazingly there was no damage to the bike (which is exceptionally constructed!) and the case did it's job and was reparable.
      I love my steel Breakaway! The ride is exceptional, weight is good, and the travel capability makes it so much more than just a bike, it's an experience!

    Too bad they don't make a rim brake version anymore. i'd like to see an updated video on packing the outback breakaway with disc brakes,. this complicates things greatly. can you even use hydraulic disc and pack it without disconnecting the hydro brakes?

    1. Why no grease on the breakaway junctions?
    2. The case needs to be redesigned with 3 separate slots it should be vertical with sliding slots so that each wheel goes into its own slot so the spokes don't scratch each other the last 3rd slot is for the Frame. Can you look into making a case like that? 3 zippers and some stitching should not make it that more expensive.
    Thanks.

      @@ritcheydesign Appreciate your reply on the grease issue. One thing I hate ( even on cheap bikes ) is scratched spokes. Since that case is too big as a carry on that is why I asked about separate zipper padded compartments for each wheel and the frame since they will just toss that case around in the airport. Thanks for taking your time to answer my inquiry.

      @@danfuerthgillis4483 don't pack it like they show in this video. the wheels next to each other will get banged up and bent out of true. instead google 'S&S couplers how to pack a bike' and use that method or a variation of it. you don't have to take off the fork. also see previous comments from others who use this method as well.

    It's a groovy minimalistic traveler. It takes a few extra moments from bag to road but it's user friendly and uncluttered. From my years of fumbling around with bikes in Asia, drop bars were always that one curly space hog, that unforgivable anti-travel nemesis of bikes. Flat bars matter.

    the packing scheme is a bit strange; e.g. its not necessary to remove the fork, only removal of the handlebar from the stem. BUT (imho) you have to remove the rear derailleur (!). i use a similar packing scheme (but the same type : 2 wheels at the bottom) without zeta wheels. so theres a lot of space left under the first wheel at the bottom to put in shoes etc. my frame size is 56. note that after e.g. 25 flights the case start to get broken/defects here and there, this confirmes to what the BAB specialist "bicycle doctor usa" from their experience with BAB bikes states. so i started to enhance the case on the weak spots (hot glue and thick plastics from drinking bottles) or just added smooth material to avoid abrasive defects. dependent on your packing scheme, this will cause your bab case to live way longer. in case of interest p.m. me for the hot spots e.g. mrull at web de
