  • As a IC 705 owner I wanted to make this video to show how I was able to set up the new radio with an external amplifier.
I have been seeing threads on the ic 705 groups.io email chain where some people were wanting to make this work.
As an added bonus, I also have the LDG Tuner hooked up in the mix and it all works great.
I hope this video helps someone.
    Thank you for watching.

Dan, Thanks for an excellent video. I've been contemplating an IC-705 purchase and wanted to make sure that additional transmit power was a possibility. You've shows that it's not too great a challenge.

Thank you, Nate. It really is a great radio and I don't regret the purchase for one second. I thought I was going to be missing the power on the 2m/440 side, but I have been using it in my truck mobile and have had nice long distance simplex QSOs as well as repeater QSOs that have not left me wanting at all. Last week I set up on the side of the road with my tripod and my Arrow satellite yagi. I had a 2m FM simplex QSO with a station in Tucson that was 125 miles away from my location. I was on a drive up hillside about 500 feet higher than my surroundings. It was awesome!!

Thank you Dan for an excellent video! I have the 704 buffer but did not use it and blew my amplifier (Xiegu 125B). Luckily it was replaced under warranty. Some say the 704 is not needed, but after my experience and reading, I find if used it is very good insurance. Maybe Xiegu or a third party will figure all of this out. Thanks again, Rudy

Thank you for watching, Rudy. I am sorry to hear about the amp, but it sure is a good thing that it was still under warranty. It is funny to hear peoples thoughts on the 704. I have heard "you don't need it", but I have always used it in the shack with my IC 7300 and I have never had any issues. It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Good video. The 705 is very easy to amplify. The problem is that many HAMs do not know how to create, or understand electronics theory so they depend on fully built solutions when sometimes they just dont exist. I am glad you shown them one method. The 705 is an absolutely kick @$$ radio. Worth every penny. My one and only complaint is the lack of USB C--- what were you thinking Icom using an absolutely obsolete micro usb port that is flimsy and prone to breaking.

Since you mentioned having a KX-3 I thought I would share a quick tip to hook up the Elecraft KXPA-100 amp to the iC-705. The connection point on the amp is the RCA PA key connector. The other end of the cable is the 3.5 mm stereo jack that goes into the ALC connector of the IC-705. It's tip to tip on both connectors and ground to ground as well. Don't use the ring on the 3 pin connector. At first I was going to make the cable but then I thought why not use a standard a 3.5 mm to two RCA stereo break out cable of which I have many. Just don't use the red RCA cable. Maybe tape the end to avoid confusion. When I ohmed it out the white RCA connector tip connects to the tip of the 3.5 mm cable. I connected it up and it engages my amp just fine. I also added a 20 ms delay for the amp to kick in through the IC-705 menu. Hope others find this useful.

Hi Dan, great video! I have an odd issue here - it all works as you describe, but when I switch off the IC-705, the LDG's SWR LEDs for 2.0 and >3.0 come up on. This is regardless of whether the IC-705 TUNER button says ON or OFF.
Does the same happen to you and any idea on how to address the issue?

    • @dansmith-n7dsx232
      @dansmith-n7dsx232  Před měsícem +1

Hi, thanks for the kudos. I do remember that issue and if I remember correctly, you need to disconnect the tuner cord from the tuner for the battery link to disconnect and turn off the tuner. If not, your batteries will not last as long. =) All the best.

    Dan,
Nice job. To the point, no rambling, and good info. I'm new to the Ham world and have been looking at the 705. I am interested in being able to hook it to an amp like what you have done so I can use it QRP or as a base station. Could you add the products/links you used in the description. I currently have a Kenwood D74 HT to get started. I saw your AZ magnets and your N7 call. I am in Queen Creek. Thanks again. 73 KJ7RGD Brian

      GM Brian,
Thank you for the comment and for watching the video. I am glad that I was able to raise some questions and I would be happy to show/tell you more. The D74 is an awesome radio and it was my first real rig also. It is still my go to HT. On Franks recommendation, I am going to post a video of the IC 705 running my Ameritron Amplifier, but if you re in QC, you could come by and see it in person.
Your timing is also pretty excellent as we have a local ham meetup at Desert Mountain Park, in Queen Creek, tonight from 5 til 8 or 9. We set up radios and chat and help each other out. We are also testing tonight, so if you wanted to upgrade, or know anyone who wants to get licensed or upgrade, you can do it right here in your hometown.
The last thing to mention is that we have a simplex net every Tuesday night on 146.580 at 7pm and we would love to have you join in, say hello, and maybe even take the reigns as net control some day. QC is super radioactive and I am glad that you reached out. Hope to see you this afternoon.
I am adding some links above to the stuff I am using in the video.
      Have a great day!

GM, I am sorry to say that I can't answer that question. I don't have the Xiegu components to test the connections, but I would highly recommend signing up for the email group as that topic, and those particular connections, have been discussed at length. If you send an email to ic-705@groups.io you will receive a welcome email within an hour or so that tells you how to search the knowledge base and to post emails with specific questions. The group consists of IC 705 owners and hopefuls around the world and many of them have had the radio for some time. I hope this helps.

You may want to use an external keying circuit. Nice little amp, but direct keying could damage your radio. Check out Kevin Loughlin's videos czcams.com/video/k8dwJMOdEMI/video.html and czcams.com/video/0uQbeFhWh2A/video.html
