    Acrylics differ so much between each other! I have my favorite acrylics I bought locally and it's so soft I can cuddle it all day. But then, I asked my mom to borrow me some acrylics and it was so terrible to work with. Literally a barbed wire 😂

    I think the pattern testing that calls for repost/tag/share etc are annoying because none of those tasks are really related to your ability to crochet ya know? Like I get when it's like "comment what type of yarn/color you would use" is reasonable interaction but I just think otherwise it seems like you are just fishing for the largest creators who want to test for you if that makes sense?

      And it’s funny how you mentioned being paid with money vs yarn bc I feel like the tester calls forget that testers are essentially working for you for no money (in exchange for the pattern which is max $15 which barely covers one hour of work) but expect so much of them. I don’t understand how this became such a thing to ask for so much with free labor! I absolutely get supporting each other but making a list of demands in order to get the “opportunity to test my pattern” feels so close to brands asking to work for free in exchange for exposure lol

    Regarding to crochet clothing - I think it's often a skill issue - most of the clothes made from simple shapes, stitches and quite thick yarn (as in most of the items you see on the internet) doesn't look so good, as well as the opposite might be sometimes true, with a pattern that is too lacy and delicate you might end up looking like you are wearing doilies you found in an abadoned attic (which might me cool but not necessarily everyones style).
    But as soon as you find the middle ground, it looks great

      I'm working on a crochet top right now, and I'm so glad I opted for a 6mm hook. The yarn is nylon ribbon yarn that I found at an estate sale 18 years ago. It's super Halloween-y, but the "correct" hook size (~4mm) would turn it into a mess. I'm working on bust shaping right now, and I can't imagine how dense it would be with a smaller hook.

    For the yarn wall/excessive amount of yarn thing, for creators that have that much, I understand because they’re constantly doing markets and/or have an Etsy where they’re selling plushies on there- so lots of it gets used. I think it’s good to stock up on sales, especially since plushie yarn is very expensive. I don’t see a problem with it as long as it’s being used and they’re not buying new yarn every day

    I thought acrylic yarn shaming was a thing of the past. It used to be prevalent in the 80's and 90's, and there was a hangover into the 2000's. Personally, I use it for things that will give high use, require lots of washing. Kids toys, blankets etc. But for me acrylic is usually much cheaper and to some people it is the only yarn in their price range. I would rather they use acrylic and take part in a hobby they enjoy, than be priced out. So yeah... if you still yarn shame... keep your opinions to yourself!

    • @ripple329
      @ripple329 Před 6 měsíci +7

      Yeah the acrylic yarn shaming is a little classist (not to sound dramatic but that’s the best way to describe it). I live by a local yarn shop that sells only natural fibers, and all the yarn is beautiful but the cheapest skein in there is $16.50 and most range from $25-35 plus they are smaller skeins than commercial ones. If I want to make a sweater that calls for 2000 yds of yarn, chances are I don’t have $150+ to spend for that one project, so yes I’m going down to Joann’s with my coupons and buying 3 RH super savers for $20 lol

      100% Acrylic/polyester yarn makes me sweat the moment I put it on me. I've been gifted tons of these items but I can't use them because of this. I crochet and knit with natural fibers for projects that will touch me in the future. I'd use the acrylic/poly for things that don't like a hot plate or towel holder, even these stuffies he does. But not for blankets scarves and such. If that makes me a snob then so be it I guess.

      @@tianamarie989 yeah the acrylic can be sweaty plus touch-wise it doesn’t feel the best on skin, i usually line my jackets with a cotton fabric and use them on cold days with layers. I don’t think it’s snobby to only use natural fibers I love sugar and cream yarn, I think it’s more that some people who can afford to always use natural fibers act like acrylic projects are just as bad as fast fashion and aren’t real fiber artists, or like the people making blankets for their friends n family are single handedly responsible for killing the sea turtles lol

    My hot take is that the chunky yarn plushie community is RIFE with IP theft because original pattern design is just something that not many people are capable of. Since most of the designs are simple, they're much easier to copy by less skilled crocheters. I feel like I see the same handful of designs circulating in the community that are all rip-offs of god knows whose original design. It's also why I would never release a free pattern, makes it easier for the thieves!
    Everyone wants to be able to say they're a pattern designer, but designing original pieces is a completely different beast than just following patterns. I know people hate gatekeeping but pattern design just is not for everyone. Your designs are actually some of the most unique chunky yarn plushie designs I've seen in this niche! Your originality has made me feel less jaded about this entire niche of amigurumi.

    Here are my yarn opinions. Caron Simply Soft is a very nice and soft acrylic. Red Heart Super Saver is a scratchy acrylic. Maybe someone will make a good recycled acrylic or polyester. Cotton is nice because it’s natural and washable but doesn’t have any stretch so it’s limited in what you can do. Wool is scratchy and I can’t imagine using it in a clothing item.

  • @ManageableLiving
    @ManageableLiving Před 13 dny +1

    No-sew is fine if you really don't want to sew but honestly patterns with sewing *typically* look so much better. I do charge accordingly and I've never had anyone bat an eye at my prices (usually starts around $100 for what I do but they are all fully custom currently) and have even gotten tipped a few times on top of my pricing. Especially for short deadlines - she gave me a $25 tip on top of the purchase price. And some goat milk soaps and lip balm from her side business! So basically a $50 tip. I'm really glad people are starting to understand the work that goes into crochet.
    Yarn wall: yes TECHNICALLY unnecessary. But I've also been crocheting since 5yo and knitting for 15 years. I'm only planning to do one to organize what I've amassed over 38 years. When it comes to my yarn I do need a visual organizing system so that's what makes sense for me to move into since my current "system" is working (the cats are lucky they're cute). I do try my best to pull from stash first.
    I really do want to try a yarn under plushie but it's so hard to change the instinct to YO.
    The softest acrylics come from a store a lot of people boycott (Hobby Lobby). But even JoAnn and Michael's have started trying to make softer acrylic lines compared to standard acrylic. A lot of natural fibers do soften up with washing/dampening/steaming to block - such as in a sweater. Each yarn has its place and if I don't know for sure, I assume it will end up in a child's hands and acrylic makes sense.
    I do struggle with pattern changes. Meaning friends always think I should put out my massively modified ones but I know the base pattern came from someone else. I suppose I could reach out to the original creator since she doesn't appear to be selling her patterns anymore. Like I don't mean to gatekeep how I heavily changed say, a Wonder Woman inspired pattern to a Belle in a ballgown inspired dolly. But it's also not fair to the pattern creator to show their pattern and what I changed.
    There's mean girls in every community. I've been accused of being the sour one in the decluttering/minimalism community for putting out content that points out why minimalism isn't the be-all end-all and why I don't consider myself a minimalist anymore.
    I have so been intrigued by AI for inspiration. Like it might be fake but what if I could make something like that??
    I think it's a great exercise to write a pattern regardless of your skills. I think the comment probably should be that you need to be realistic about what should be a free pattern vs a paid pattern.
    For black yarn, I wouldn't use it in some settings, but most of my light bulbs are "daylight" and that makes a huge difference. I know a few people with those special quilting/true color lamps that start with an O but I'm blanking on the brand.
    Knit vs crochet: I think English either is the only or one of the only languages that has two words for the craft. I bought a Japanese pattern booklet once since I knew someone at the time who could translate the pattern I wanted. The booklet had both knit a crochet patterns - they assume you know both.
    Crochet clothing has come along leaps and bounds the last few years. If I want cozy, crochet is fine but a lot of times I also want knitted drape.
    Melting safety eyes?? What??? I can't even stand when people use glue IN PLACE of the back piece. A safety eye tool is very inexpensive. I don't mean to be the safety eye police but there are regulations for toys or anything targeted at a child which anything you call a toy or push and sell would fall under this (in the US anyway).
    Hating people is ridiculous. Some of us live in climates where it gets super cold and while I haven't made a velvet top but I have a store bought velvet cardigan that I wear a lot. Would make one. How inclusive of this person...
    Ugly amigurumi is completely subjective.

      oh my gosh, I think one thing that I actually edited out of this video, was the fact that safety eyes weren't intended for crochet, but for normal fabrics where they have a lot more to grip onto. With the fabric that we create with crochet being so varied because of the tension across artists, it's not surprising that sometimes eyes can come loose

    late to the party, but I will say there is definitely a way to not work in the spiral and have dedicated rows without having a visible spine on the outside. I used this for a recent sweater pattern, but when you join the last stitch to the first stitch of the current row, you pull the current loop (the one of the hook) into the top legs of the first stitch, pushing the loop in from front to back. then you pull the loop up and work a normal single crochet into the top of the first loop. This forces the "extra yarn" to be behind the right side of the work and makes for a seemless join without having to spiral up the piece.

    I’ve just found your channel and this is my first vid I’ve watched of yours. I’m excited to sub and see more!
    I’ve been crocheting since I was a small child holding great grandma’s hands while she crocheted and explained what was happening. ❤
    Since you’re an Aussie, this likely won’t be helpful for you, personally, but maybe helps someone here in the states. The basic acrylic store brand yarn at Michael’s, Loops and Threads, is my absolute favorite to work with! I won’t buy anything else for acrylics. It doesn’t split or fray, it’s soft right off the skein for working with, it washes up so so so soft and cuddly that you can make baby snugglers and blankies that look and feel incredible! I also use it for amigurumi.
    PS-anyone rushing out to Michael’s, beware of other types of Loops and Threads yarn as they are NOT all equal! Only the basic acrylic skeins are good, imo. The fluffy yarn sheds til there’s nothing but a string left if the item needs washing. The jewel tones thinner stuff splits and grays and breaks off easily and if you gotta 🐸, you’re outta luck!
    Sorry for the wall o’text😅

    Loved this video. On the subject of pattern writing, I have a huge problem with selling a pattern when you can barely crochet. I have had to deep dive research creators before buying patterns recently. I was scammed in my opinion when I purchased a pattern and was having a lot.if difficulty with it, it literally was written out even the #s. "single crochet six in the magic ring you made.in the first sentence of this paragraph" like wtf! It's not a storybook. I found the creator on sm sites only to find out they had been crocheting for 3 months! In my opinion if you are going to sell a pattern you should hire a proof reader it's like 40 bucks for an animuguri pattern. Then do a tester call if you want.
    My second issue is lately on YT the algorithm is showing me a lot of crochet content and there are pattern review videos. And in everyone I have watched they literally rip the creator to shreds with comments like "this could be a no sew pattern, they SHOULD have made it no sew! And then ranknit lower because it isn't! This creator has a largish following but because they do markets and want it fast and easy, they bash patterns that are not no sew. One channel bashes patterns by saying all patterns should be written for beginners, like what???? In a convo I had with her she said the pattern writer should be responsible for teaching any stitch that isn't a sc,hdc,dc, slst, with linked videos. I said but patterns are labeled under degree of knowledge, if a pattern says intermediate or expert then if.you have 4 months of knowledge that is on you if you can't make it. She came back with then the pattern writer is gatekeeping and not inclusive. I was.just.blown away. And finally there is one channel where she just started to crochet within the year and if the plushie doesn't look perfect it's the patterns fault. She is obviously making items from patterns above her level. Her tension is so so loose and items are super wonky. But because she is passively aggressive bashing the pattern with this holier than thou I am super smart attitude she has started acquiring mean girl followers. I have been crocheting 50 years, I started at 5. I just think the new mentality is "I want to make it, I don't need experience the pattern should be written how I want it or it is wrong!" I mean at this point my gen x bad attitude is starting to show lol. I would love to pop up a tent next to them at a market and see who sells more or less @ a higher profit. Ok that was a mean thought but damn its hard to be nice sometimes!😂

      Fyi, in the US, if it is not mentioned that you can't sell the item prior to the purchase of the pattern, it is not lawful. So you can indeed sell the items but not disseminate the pattern. Also, there is no refund policy in pdf pattern purchases. I know this because I bought a pattern that stated no sale of made item on the last page of the pattern in tiny print. I brought it to a family friend who is a contract attorney, and he said they could never find you liable for copyriggt infringement.

    • @crochetmezaddy
      @crochetmezaddy  Před 6 měsíci +1

      In my experience it’s more known as a pun on the word Bisexual, which my bisexual friends have shown discomfort with the use of their identity as being part of the joke. Potentially it could be pun on bi-lingual or something but not from what I’ve ever heard hahaha

    • @sommerc4633
      @sommerc4633 Před 6 měsíci

      @crochetmezaddy I totally understand!! I just don't think it's meant in a bad way... just a way to explain that some fiber artists "go both ways". I don't think being bisexual is anything to be ashamed of, it's just how someone is. So I feel the same way about bistitchual. Thanks for your reply ❤️

    Okay. So I agree with most of what you said. Except joining rounds and no-sew patterns. For many amigurumi, crocheting in the round is fine. But I absolutely HATE the look of jogging when utilizing color changes (like if something has stripes). I think it looks lazy, like the person couldn’t be bothered to make a clean strip. As for no-sew, I agree that sewing pieces together can definitely add to the look and shouldn’t be a deciding factor on whether you purchase/make a pattern or not. However, I do think there is a place for no-sew and there are some no-sew patterns that are super detailed and its impressive the designer was able to make it no-sew. It is also an easier entry point for beginners. Lastly, and my main reason, is I have some major sensory issues. I can’t always afford natural fibers, so I use a lot of acrylic, which is mostly fine. But the FEELING of that yarn being pulled through stitches is the absolute WORST. Sewing those pieces together is literally torture, so it ends up looking sloppy because I try to finish it as quickly as possible. So for some people, there might be more to it than just being “lazy” or not wanting to build that skill. 😊

    Im new to crochet and have exclusively used needlefelting for eyes and details with acrylic yarns (im doing aphid777 's from deviantart eeveelution baby patterns)
    I tend to be super tight- probably too tight- with my stitches so it really works nice with the inital felting layer since theres less gaps for the needle to go through and stab the stuffing. With how plush yarns seem to break im not sure if needlefelting would work at all without damaging or completely breaking the stitches below
    Side note i love sewing pieces probably more than the crochet itself 😅

    • @crochetmezaddy
      @crochetmezaddy  Před 6 měsíci

      I loooove sewing too - and agree, felting into chenille yarns just doesn't work at all. The way that the yarn is created doesn't allow for the felt needle to connect and actually felt like it does with wools, cottons and acrylics

    Regular and Dappled(not sparkles or brights) Bernat Baby Blanket yarn is super soft and I love to use for plushies. With that being said the flagship Bernat Blanket yarn is garbage to work with! The squeak KILLS me 🥴 and it’s rough to the touch.

    My favourite eyes are needle felted. I don't think glued felt is any safer that plastic eyes for small children, they'll still pull them off and put them in their mouth. Either sewn on or felted on for safety.

    • @rebeccapfeifer2376
      @rebeccapfeifer2376 Před 6 měsíci +1

      But this can be said for any part of the plushie. A horn, tail..the stuffing. Nothing is 100% “safe”.

    • @WoodsteadCreative
      @WoodsteadCreative Před 6 měsíci

      @rebeccapfeifer2376 it can, my point being melting the plastic on the safety eyes actually ruins the integrity of the eye making it more likely to break and less safe than using it properly. And saying you're using glued eyes for safety doesn't make sense when they're just as likely to come off.

    • @TheCgulledge
      @TheCgulledge Před 6 měsíci

      I thankfully haven't come across many mean girls overall - but man, that first month or two, as I was trying to learn how to read patterns and would post what I now know would be a really simple question, I would get older women making snide remarks. It definitely influenced which crochet groups and fiber groups I decided to join a lot!

  • @WoodsteadCreative

    Also melting the safety eyes actually stops them being safety eyes 🤯 once heated the plastic is brittle and can snap and you're back to eye falls off and kid puts it in their mouth

    I wish those within the crochet/knitting communities were more kind/understanding of those within the community who may not have the privileges they scream about.
    Example is buying expensive yarns (because “it’s better for the environment and you hate the environment if you don’t”), or those who may prefer no sew because of disabilities regarding sewing, etc.
    My hottest take is that I see an excessive amount of ableism/classism/elitism within both communities present day, and it honestly discourages me greatly as a beginner 🥲

    • @crochetmezaddy
      @crochetmezaddy  Před 6 měsíci

      I think that disability perspective is one that I haven't had anyone bring up to me regarding no sew (or even yarn types) and I'm thank you you've brought it up - because it is such a valid point to make that these different ways of doing things, are not only out of preference but sometimes out of necessity

  • @CherryWanders
    @CherryWanders Před 6 měsíci

    People getting bent over amigurumi patterns makes no sense to me. We're literally dealing with shapes : sphere, square, circle, cone ect - there are limited ways to create these shapes so someone with no pattern can freeform something that someone else perhaps "wrote" a pattern for. They didn't steal it - they just made it how it's made. Same with facial details - cats have whiskers. It's like someone taking a common stitch like a granny cluster and making a blanket then calling it "their" pattern. Granny clusters have been around forever. If anyone with crochet knowledge could make the same blanket without your pattern, was your "pattern" really necessary in the world? Should you be taking money for that?
