Another great show, thanks guys! Re: Dutch working in WCW, saying that he was afraid of getting hurt when working with the younger talent... I think this explains the one time I got to see Dutch at a WCW house show, he wrestled such an agonizingly slow-paced match, so-o-o-o much stalling... he must not have felt safe with whoever he was working with (and after all these years I can't remember who that was). I was stunned when I eventually got to see Dutch's earlier matches, pre-WCW, where he worked a really fast-paced style. So, sorry for booing you that night Dutch! ;)
One of my favorite stories in wrestling is when Kevin Sullivan had the evil Satan gimmick and would go grocery shopping in full gimmick robe, make up,boots whole deal Kayfabe was great
Kevin Sullivan made for such a great villain. He was the last of his kind.
I lived in Tampa at that time.i was about 12 yrs old and was crossing a street and a black cadillac el dorado slowed down and the windiw rolled down and it was Kevin sullivan and purple haze in full gear.he asked me if i wanted to get hit by a car since i was crossing in the middle of the road.i said no sir and they both laughed insanely and did a burnout as they left.great childood memories.i watched wrestling and knew who he was.
Kevin is in the hospital and not doing too well.
Thats sad to hear,he was my favorite heel of all time. Thanks for posting this.
I love Sullivan dressed up as the wizard manager for Oz but his tennis shoes sticking out from under the robe.
A post office box is nice to have in case you don't want someone to have your actual address. Plus they don't leave a package on your doorstep for someone to steal
I love hearing Dutch talk about college football and sports in general. Its nice to hear his input on stuff other than wrestling. Keep up the good talks guys!
HEY JAMES! Just got reminded of the new Stevie Richard’s show in this video so I went over, and I subscribed to your channel AND the Stevie’s Richard’s show channel! I can’t wait to watch everything and catch up! I love this series with you and Dutch, and you WSI interviews. I’m sure the Stevie Richards show will be equally awesome! Keep it up man! These channels help give this old wrestling fan some history, good stories, and helps work fly by!
Leaving the TBS studio is what really pissed me off about WCW.
WCW Saturday Night was the drizzling sh’ts.
Not always
Yes, James. Talk Radio with Eric Bagosian is incredibly underrated. You can cut the tension in it with a knife.
Oliver Stone is one of my favorite directors. I know you never met him, Dutch, but if you had - maybe youd be a character in the film Platoon. 😁
Being a kid in the Charlotte area in the 80s, I was a HUGE JCP/NWA fan. When JCP sold to Turner, a lot of fans in our area soured on the promotion. When Ric Flair and Jim Herd had their blow-up and Flair quit (or got fired, depending on who’s telling the story), WCW lost Charlotte. I was at a house show at the old Charlotte Coliseum (this was the night after Hulk Hogan debuted) I was shocked that there were only about 50 people there…. For Flair vs Steamboat! The fans at the time had no idea how much of a mess the Turner company had become. I’m glad it turned around for the Monday Night War… that was some of the best TV (Nitro and RAW) wrestling will ever see! I loved Dutch as a commentator on World Wide. I remember Sid said to the camera on one episode, “Say something good about me, Dutch Mantel,” and Dutch put him over big on commentary! Then when Dutch let Ric Flair take his place in a US title match right before Capital Combat… that was great TV. They should have held on to him! Thanks for the video… really enjoyed it!
I love the intro music. It reminds me of watching spaghetti westerns with my dad as a kid.
Great show! It feels as if you guys are more comfortable with each other every week. Keep up the good work!
On Spotify, the audio podcast goes to a Henry Godwin interview
Heh. That’ll put some butts in the seats.
Men as a kid growing up in the 90s . Early 90s wcw was much better wrestling then early 90s wwf . Of course im talking match wise .
Dubya C Dubya was great wraslin, WWF was just the sizzle
Also grew up in the 90s in the Midwest n only got WWF
@Story Time with Dutch Mantell
Clemson's problem is their coach, who chooses to not change his ways. Dabo doesn't want to deal with the portal because he says "there aren't any good players in the portal" Some of his best players that were in the portal went somewhere else & have excelled
Dude, WCW was awesome. I liked WCW better than WWF back in the day.
605 Wrestling in the 90s and the 80s were NIGHT AND DAY.
RIP 605 IN THE 80s
I was a big Mid-Atlantic/Georgia Championship Wrestling/JCP/NWA guy. When JCP became WCW it was never the same to me, although I still watched it over the WWF product.
I remember years ago, when I picked up channel 7 from Jackson Tennessee on a stormy night, I was 3 and a half hours away in Clarksville Tennessee, we didn't get channel 7, but I did that night , and they showed an hour of Lawler vs Austin Idol ! It was magical !!!!! I loved Duch and Memphis Wrestling!!!!!!!
Nice story...I reside in Jackson. How quickly people forget their history. The general public here now (approximately 60K) don't know anything about wrestling, past or present).
@@ralphharkey3842 Jackson is a magical place for me, my Grandmothers house was in the middle of Campbell Street and they built the town around her house, the hut restaurant was right next to her house! We went there for Christmas from the late 60s until the 80s, my grandmas house was tore down After she passed away, I think there is a liquor store or dollar general where her house used to be ! I love West Tennessee, great memories ! Hope you like living in Jackson I have a cousin that still lives there, but all my other kin either passed away or moved
@@ralphharkey3842 that's a shame bro
@@ralphharkey3842 my grandmas house was on Campbell Street, they built the town around her house! In the 70s there was the hut restaurant right next door! They tore her house down after she passed away, I think a liquor store or dollar general is there now
@@ralphharkey3842 Jackson is where both my parents were born and raised! I always loved Jackson
Dutch! I love the reaction your grandson gives when you tell these tales, it’s a completely different world to him!
James isnt just a podcast host. Hes a wrestlint historian. The second coming of Meltzer if you will 😂 nah but seriously...and hes a damn good host allng with it. Thats why his podcasts/shows (in the case of Stevie...dont get it mixed up!) are top quality. He's atleast a few notches up than any other rasslin podcast host...the complete opposite to undertaker's co-host if you willll.
At least you can trust him It seems like unlike Dan mirade
Center Stage is on West Peachtree. Not Peachtree.
It is a venue that seated a little over 1,000 for concerts with no seats on the floor.
TBS never used it as a studio until WCW started doing TV tapings there
The sad part is that of all the people I know none of them except one are into wrestling and have heard of Dutch Mantell.
The one guy I know started weight lifting when he was thirty-five and had some Wisconsin State Records but was too old and had three daughters at home so he never tried wrestling but his one nephew was a semi-professional. He was a white guy that wore a mask and wrestled as a Mexican. He was very white
If our IQ's get too high, we will need a PH.D from the University of Dutch! 😂
It may have helped it with other people but personally I haven’t watched wrestling since the night Nitro came on and Vince was revealed as the owner of WCW. I obviously knew how wrestling worked way before then but when you completely took the mystery away. I went to watching MMA
Shocked that Rick flair isn’t on there and I don’t think Jericho was even mentioned
Have dutch and james ever hung out irl? Should catch us off guard with a walk on :) .
Congratulations James!
May I ask what are Dutch's thoughts on Norvelle Austin? I really liked him when he and CoCo were PYT
Another wrestler you mentioned in this episode was Al Green. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2013 from COPD.
Let's be honest here; The guy asking about Bradshaw just wanted to hear a "HAWK TUEH!"
You're the man Dutch!!!!!!
Legit, at the time WCW was trash compared to what WWF/WWE was doing.
Nowadays, I often wonder if perhaps those times were to occur today, if the roles may be actually reversed.
There are a LOT more people missing WCW than hating it these days.
It was just a sign of the times.
That was also 30 years ago. people have come AND gone since then.
WE have a distinct problem in society where people continue to dig into the past to complain about how things were yet the times we are in today are certainly NOT better by comparison.
Hey Dutch, it’s “Billy W” from two weeks ago 😂 man we’ve fallen off we used to own osu. Went to the orange bowl game in 2014. Go tigers!
George Weingeroff was a mainstay in the Poffo's ICW. George has a great story about Randy Savage and "Vanessa" that's on CZcams.
Great question and research on Dutch’s military service.
I saw Bob Hope at the Boy scouts National Jamboree in 1974 in Idaho and the gold digers
Hey guys, Van Hammer in the news for DWI, knocking child off her bike, fleeing the scene. Not a good guy
You guys always over deliver on your content. Awesome show as always.
Aw man, you mentioned the Dynamic Dudes and their skateboards. Johnny Ace could ride it, but that was it. Don’t expect anything remotely fancy with him. He even said as much on an interview somewhere. He could ride his skateboard down the ramp & that’s it. Shane couldn’t even do that.
39:40 *@Dutch* You know that Story you told about the Radio Station DJ sounds an awful lot like the plot of Howard Stern's 1997 film *Private Parts.* Which, while being described as a "autobiographical" telling of Howard Sterns early-life as a rebel radio DJ - has been largely discredited as fictionalized, with elements in the film being from recounting's of things that Howard heard happened to OTHER DJ's from back in the day. I wonder if that fellow you described here was actually important in the history of DJs, and if that film is actually based a bit on that guy your speaking about.
Awesome Show men!
This week's Observer has a note about Swoll making $400k. As I recall, he confirms this was true in the Nitro book and says he got his full money after fighting them.
I'm buying a diploma and shirt as soon as I can guys I absolutely love the show.
I was picking my son up from camp near the Georgia South Carolina border and passed right through Walhalla, South Carolina. Isn’t that where Dutch is from?
I hated WCW Saturday Nights, but loved Nitro and Thunder.
I actually preferred Saturday Night because I didn't have Hogan, Hall, Nash and Bischoff shoved down my throat every 5 minutes.
George Gulas for the HOF!
"Daddy says induct!"
Except that Saturday Night offered usually a lot better wrestling and main events actually happened and weren't constant nwo run ins and other shit. Nitro started good but became a mess in 1997 and Thunder was ok the first 3 weeks, then it became a crap recap show that offered nothing of value.
@@ShadowAngel-lt8nw
Horrible take.
WCW had a decent roster back in the late 80s and early 90s, but based on what Dutch said it sounded like a really shit place to work.
WCW Saturday night would have some PPV style main event matches that were pretty good
Thanks again!!
For clips I thought u had an agreement with tna to use images n vids has that changed?
Van Hammer did iomprove in the ring quite a bit over a long time.
Thats not saying mich tho
Yeah, some of his 1999 TV matches are actually decent to good. A lot of it was his opponents, but he wasn't completely being carried.
wish i could help go through tna footage looking for Dutch, but i'm still only on 2005. (very slowly)
Was the Dutch name given to Dutch because he was tight with his Money, the bay were I grew up was full of Dutch immigrants and they were all tight with their money . As tight as a Dutchman is a common term .
The payoff story that Dutch was talking about reminded me of something I've heard on Arn's podcast about payoffs during his time in the NWA/Crockett promotions. He said when he was teaming with Tully, they had a payoff of $2500 a piece & JJ Dillon had gotten a payoff of $5000. Tully asked JJ why did he get more & JJ told him that he got color(blood)
Maybe, but JJ was also Dusty's assistant booker, so his payoff may have also been higher because he was part of the office.
Big Bubba/Boss Man left JCP because he received a much lesser payoff than everyone else in the scaffold match at Starrcade 87 (including Cornette) even though he also climbed the scaffold and did a spot up there with Ricky Morton.
How come the video is unavailable?
While vkm was cartooning wrestling, in the south there was still a huge market that wanted the NWA style and hated the cartoon age. What does wcw's management do, and I use that term lightly, went cartoon lite, an instant death sentence. If it was not for Turner not realizing how much money was being lost so quickly, it would have died off much sooner. Clemson will get to the playoff by default, nobody's in the acc for decades. If the acc dissolves and they have to actually have to play a few real contenders in another conference the results would be more losses and less championships.
Mizzou has gotten some great players from the portal
I saw multiple WCW shows at center stage in 93/94/…maybe 95.
Tickets were free for everyone
There wasn’t a boo/cheer sign there.
The Disney tapings in Orlando is where the audience was coached who to cheer and boo because most of the people there weren't wrestling fans that didn't know anything about the product, and they'd bring in a fresh crowd for each hour of TV that was shot.
I didn't watch WCW. 😮
I have seen some PPVs on WWE network though (before it was on Peacock, eugh).
Dick Slater is the wrestler who threw away the Mid South TV Title.
Let’s not forget Dutch, the Buckeyes whooped that ass in their last meeting. Go Dutch & GO BUCKS!
Any paranormal stories from Dutch ??
Van Hammer, he had a great look - that's ALL he had.
omg do a 180 in your chair!
yo where's the segments on the timeline
Couldn’t disagree more about the Wyatt dorks. If I have to sit thru their goofball shit in my TV, and all the other talent has to play along with being spooked by fog machines, then they’re hugging fans and doing TikTok dances and shit? Fuck that.
Wow so angry. Do you keep tht same energy when Undertaker did it? How bout Kane? Id love to see a 2 year old call Undertaker a dork.
I said it a gazillion times and I say it again: Kayfabe is not dead or at least it doesn't have to be. As people cna be invested in a movie and a show, to a point that for the moment they are watching it, it's "real" to them, while they know it's scripted and they watch actors playing a character. It can be the same with wrestling.
I mean no one blames the cast from Lord of the Rings if they don't take pictures with fans while beeing themsels and not the character! No one says the are killing their character of the movie! Why is such a thing a big deal when it comes to wrestling?
If wrestlers are on TV and not in character I get it, that should not happen, unless maybe for WWE HOF, because that's special anyway. But why bothering with it if they are off air?
I think a little bit of kayfabe can't hurt. Out of respect to those who came before.
I like dutch and this show...> But the young guy looks like he could be his son.
It's his grandson.
And your point is?
I wonder if dutch ever heard of Dave rabbit?
Why isn't he in the WWE Hall of Fame
Speaking of Pretty Deadly do you know why Trump doesn't like Siegfried and Roy?
Is Dutch still married because he never mentions his wife. Not even in quick passing or anything.
He has a husband
@@kevinbbaddoh come on 😅
@@alphatoddioA black husband
Well WCW was kicking the WWE s butt in the 90s . Not to say the WWE wasn't good but it was the most demoralized show compared to WCW too . Nobody needed to see the freaky ideas Vince McMahon had on his 90s show because he wasn't well in the brain
Agenda 47
Dutch = Derek Smalls
dammit, now I won't be able to unsee it
Easy to say you hate WCW now they're out of business , why not put up a video Why I Hate WWE
WCW fans hated you!
🌈✌️💓
Dutch couldn't make it in WCW
Lack of believable talent
Great show as always. Don West just wasn't very good, his bullet train like commentary was awful coupled with his lack of knowledge was off putting, tazz was a massive upgrade. Dutch, Jeff & russo may not have liked it but the majority of fans did. By all accounts he was a great guy but, a good commentator he was not.
Pretty Deadly= Dangerously Cute
Yeah sure pal 😅
Wait, you're taking partnerity leave? ......I give up.
Partnerity?
He's taking paternity leave. He's having a child, ffs.
He's a 2024 guy
Boomer Sooner 😊
Kayfabe is OVER... im sorry to all the people that r holding onto it by a thread still buts its been gone and never coming back
Just because kayfabe is dead doesn't mean wrestlers shouldn't try to protect their gimmick. The Undertaker wouldn't be the star that he is if he was taking photos with fans as Mark Calaway while he was still getting over.
@@anointed6386 And yet, Taker took constantly pictures with fans, happily signed autographs and heck, during the whole "Where is the Undertaker"-story in 1994, even the WWF magazine showed some bad photoshops of Taker travelling the world, including being on public beaches.
The WWF was always the absolute worst when it came to kayfabe (unsurprising, considering Vince McMahon Sr. was one of the guys who killed Kayfabe in 1956 when he stated in an article of the Washington Post that Karl von Hess isn't a nazi and just plays a role.
@ShadowAngel-lt8nw Maybe Taker wasn't the best example 😅
Loss on kayfabe is not as much of a thing as plain cartoon stupidity.
@@anointed6386 None of the WWF wrestlers were. Let's never forget that the WWF released a VHS tape with behind the scenes footage of the motion capture stuff for Acclaim's WWF Wrestlemia Arcade Game and it's full of kayfabe breking moments, all the guys joking with the team around, Taker asking his his takes were good enough.
Besides: Everybody should've realized that Taker is the Bounty Hunter in Hulk Hogan's Suburban Commando anyway 😂
