Folk High Schools, Adult Education, and the Philosophy of Nikolaj Grundtvig

- "Grundtvig is our man for this time. He's still relevant," says Clay Warren, a professor of communication at George Washington University and author of The School for Life: N.F.S. Grundtvig on the Education for the People.
Nikolaj Grundtvig, a 19th century Danish educator and a contemporary of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard, helped pioneer the folk high school, an adult educational institution that is common in Scandinava. The school does not grant academic degrees but rather fosters intellectual thinking and discussions through community engagement.
Warren sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie to discuss his book, the educational philosophy underpinning Grundtvig's work, as well as Grundtvig's emphasis on individual potential and development.

Yes, You are luckt becayse you have Nikoloj Fredrick Sevenn Grundvig as your ancestor. He liked history and philosophy and gave Denmark a new Nationalism in 2nd half of 19th century. His policies were adopted and relevent forever in Denmark. You have to proud of yourself by saying the name of Grundvig. I read about him in the journal The Beacon by Lucis trust.

Grundtvig was a crucial figure in developing that egalitarian mindset of Danes, believing the commoners should be educated too and have a say in their country's development. His ideas of a united Danish mentality and belonging helped develop a certain national pride that is visible to this day in the Danish society.
It ment the world for my aunts and uncles, who all left school at14, that they got to spend a winter at a højskole, when they were in their early twenties.
They learnt more that winter, than the 7 years on the school bench!
I was here the learnt about the rights and the obligations, that comes with being an active participant in a democratic society.

This is so oustanding. Learning should usually not be industrial, so the folk school would do so many so well today.
Definetly anybody can be at his/her Folke Højskole, even to create it. Nevertheless if tou haven't been at one, not even for a week, then all of you commentsare coming from imagination and suppositions.
I've been in 2 of the 72 Folke Højskoles in Danmark, and definitely that experience allowed me to understand why Danmark is the country that nowadays is. And regarding personal development, fu! no words can describe how worth it it's been. Definitely a experience which I can reccomend highly truly 100% aware.

I knew Grundtvig was big in Denmark, but that he should be this big, I'm amazed.
It's not 1 out of 10 Danes at a folk high school at any one time. That would be 500K students studying at a folk high school simultaneously. I learned from this book I'm reading (which mentions the same 1 out of 10, but not at any one time, just 1 out of 10), that there are 70 of them in Denmark, and some have on the order of 100 or fewer students.
I read about Grundtvig in the journal The Beacon. I think that the journal would have to publish his photo.
CZcams is my Folk High School. I don't even need to leave my house to attend.

The romantic period in Denmark was really special.... Among hc Andersen Søren Kierkegaard, we had Nils Ørsted.Chr. Hansen. adam oehlenschläger, Copenhagen in 1820-50 was a really special place in the world.
The Danish revulutionen 1949 happens like this.. a gruppe of citizen went to the king. We want Democracy... The king Fredrik nr 7 ... Okay.... I don't like apslute power anyway.... And whey went home... And the Danish democracy was born.. no blood on streets... No. Problem.. peaceful..
Grundtvig was part of that he is on The picture in folketinget of The founding farthers of the Danish democracy... Denmark is still a monacy.. with now King Fredrik nr x. The gen x King with x factor...
