    Any one thinking of getting the a7c should also look at the new G compact 24m f2.8, 40m f2.5, and 50m f2.5 lenses. They are perfect for this small body!

      I've got the a7c and I had the 50mm f/2.5 lens for a little while. It is a really good lens, a lot better than the 50mm f/1.8. I ended up getting the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO which I adore, so I quickly sold the Sony 50mm.

    Thanks for doing this video. I have the a7c, 35mm f/2.8 and also the Loxia 35mm. I love all of these combinations apart from the Sony colours. But after a lot of messing around, I'm finding ways to process the images from this camera to a place where I am happy with them. I've been drooling at a X100V, but this has given me enough perspective to realise that I probably won't find enough benefit with that. I'm actually really enjoying just using one camera body and a few lenses. It's nice to keep things simple.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Před rokem

      Yes the a7c is still a fantastic camera. If you’ve never take a look at the Cobalt Image camera profile system I suggest you do. I have the base profiles for my a7c and a9 and then use their Fuji profiles to bring the Fuji film sims to my Sony RAWs. And I think they are on sale through today. I’m thinking of picking up a few extra profiles to add to my kit today.

    Excellent comparison of the two. I’ve had my A7C for about a year now and unexpectedly branched into wedding work with it. At the start of the year, I had no intention of ever trying to make money off of photography. And for my personal hobby photography, I’m definitely the target audience for Fujifilm cameras. I came across someone with an X100V a few months ago and they let my hold it, try out what the body and dials feel like and look through the viewfinder(s). I was AMAZED. But used prices are just insane these days - if you can even find one used. So for the time being my most enjoyable camera is a 70s film SLR. It gets me emotional just looking at it, or holding it in my hands. And I do love my A7C with smallish, fast primes too. Like you said: a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

      If only I could afford both lol. The a7cR intrigues me but I’ve honestly not had much reason to look into another a7c body at the moment. The original still fits all my needs. The viewfinder is definitely not the best so if they maybe found a way to make that bigger and significantly change the grip to give more room between it and the lens mount I think I would be more interested.

    Great comparison! I have been using an X100T for some years now as travel camera and for everyday carry, in parallel to my Canon DSLR. Now with the move to a R5 I'd love to have a light and small 35/2.8 like the Rokinon/Samyang. Hopefully they will release that for RF at some point, though Canon's latest moves against third parties make that increasingly unlikely.

    Thanks for this video. Now I decided to go for Sony A7C with 40mm f2.5 G. Aside from it’s compact combo, the goodness of full frame has more advantages for both photos and videos. And it’s interchangeable too, having only one focal lenght kinda bores me.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Před rokem +2

      I love 40mm! I haven't tried that lens though -- let me know how it is. Admittedly, I think the only reason I get along so well with the x100 (or any fixed lens camera) is because I have other cameras that offer the focal length flexibility that it can't. So i think you made the correct choice if you like a bit of variety in fields of view -- like I do.

    I have the A7C and the Zeiss and the combination is incredible. I shoot a lot of low light street (I mean REALLY low light), and can do so while maintaining 1/200. However, and this is a big however, Sony cameras leave me cold. While I know the A7C will get the shot in the bag every time, there's something impersonal about Sony gear. I had a lot more fun on the street with my old OMD EM5, for example, despite the poor low light performance of the m43 sensor. I've been looking at Fujis as a possible replacement to the A7C but ultimately that amazing AF performance in low light, offering superb results (a combination of clarity and full frame depth), keeps me from doing so. The results alone have forced me to begrudgingly grow to love the A7C! The half-cage hand grip, which I think you also have, really helps with off-camera flash work, making the camera operational with one hand only. Top wheel for aperture, jog wheel for shutter speed, and push right on the jog wheel for ISO. Even in 2023 this little camera is still an amazing performer.

Anyways I have both the A7c and x100f and while I have used the a7c successfully for both personal and professional work I can’t shake the feeling it’s not well suited for either use case-for all the reasons you mentioned. I especially liked your thoughts about the “presence” of the x100. It’s a camera you want to wear vs hide in a bag. I’m 90% a stills photographer, I sold my x100v after a year for my A7C, then sold the A7C a year later for my A7R4… then bought a GR3x to compliment that for pure Street. Of the x100v or a7c, which do I wish I had back? Neither, though I hear a 30mp A7C2 may be in the works for 2023 which I will buy in a minute. Sony with it’s huge glass options and improving sensors are where my money will go. Film emulations can be had in post.

    Or don't choose: I have both! Lovely video. ❤ One way to make the a7c more of an EDC is to utilize the "Fuji-Killer" 40mm prime. That said, I've been getting amazing imagery (most recently in Berlin, Lux and Geneva while on biz trips) with the new Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 lens, an absolutely pin-sharp, feather-light companion that gives you the range you need while walking around a city. In short, both are exceptional cameras that have helped me avoid the feeling I need anything new.

I just got myself a A7C, and I am thinking about pairing it with one good 35mm lens. The Zeiss, 35 mm, F2.8 or the Sony, 40 mm, F2.5,G. What do you get with the 35 mm that you don’t with the 40 and vice versa? The 35 is older and a little cheaper on the used market. The 40mm seems every bit as tiny with better controls (clicky aperature ring, AF switch, and focus hold button), and build quality, gasket seals. Is it sharper? What about distortion control?

    Hey, thanks for the video. It touches a kinda thirdworld-dilemma I have. I switched from a Nikon/Sony to Fujifilm recently, my old gear is so old, its not worth much.. So I kept it. Professionally I'm all Fuji now except for a rare portrait with Nikon once in a while..
    But the weird thing is.. when I travel, go on holiday or weekends somewhere with the kids, I keep being drawn to the 35mm 2.8 sony-zeiss... its like nothing really beats it in the fuji-world. My original A7r and s are both getting old, command dials are starting skipping and what not. Soo I have been eying the A7C as an alternative if my A7's really die altogether... But I also think that keeping foot in the Sony field is just a waste as the chance I'm going back professionally is very slim. I should love the Idea of the x100, and I do.. but my mind keeps telling me that the 35mm Zeiss is just more versatile.
    Your video did prove to me that the A7C is not the way to go, though.. So thanks for that
    My take away:
    The Zeiss 35mm 2.8 is the perfect lens, with no companion.

      One thing that might be worth trying is getting some non conductive electronics contact cleaner. My Ricoh GR III dial used to skip around like that but after spraying contact cleaner and letting it dry, it came back to life and the dial works perfectly again! It is a tough spot to be in, as you say. Best of luck to you in your decision!

      Haha owning both seems to be my solution too lol. And, despite them having a similar viewfinder orientation, I’ve never felt the need to get rid of one over the other. The experience of using them is different enough that I don’t feel the overlap. That might be due to using the optical viewfinder only on the x100 - makes the experience unique by comparison. Thanks for engaging!

    Great review and I really like all the points you made about both cameras. I went through two X100V cameras and returned both because the autofocus could not be trusted. it simply missed focus even when confirming focus. I just could not see paying $1500 for a camera that had a subpar AF system. Trust me I messed with every setting on it and had others hep me form every Fuji group and forum online and in the end the X100V could not be trusted. I ended up buying the Sony A7C and have been very happy with it. The Fuji simply doesn't even come close to it's performance and image quality. I also have it paired with the 35mm Zeiss.

    My thoughts exactly LG. What is this, an EVF for ants? I can't get on with the a7c viewfinder. I tried an aftermarket eye cup that mounts via the hot shoe and it still was no good. I don't wear glasses either.
    The a7c IQ is awesome though and the video capability is very handy in a body that small. You even get lBIS which I don't think you touched on in the video. And you can super stabilize the a7c video in Catalyst Browse though it's too tedious to do it with every clip.
    I'm trying out a Sigma FP next to see if it can be the ultimate compact FF camera. Will make a video on that probably in the next few months.

But the A7C that came later still using the old menu. I feel like being lied to, so I am not getting it. If the A7CII has a new or better menu, I will most likely get one.

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  Před rokem

      If you want something smaller -- maybe look into some of the smaller primes for Sony mount first and try them on your current cam. A7C isnt THAT much smaller than the other a7 bodies so you should be able to get an idea of size with a smaller prime. If that wouldn't scratch your itch, I don't think the a7c alone would help if you are looking for the ultimate compact package for when the 35GM is too much. -- you'd have to lean all the way in with a small compact camera like x100 or GR if you're really chasing that. Definitely a tough decision though.

Sorry I can’t remember the specific recipes but I dial something like these in on all my Fuji cameras.

  • @abelardojeda
    @abelardojeda Před rokem +2

    There are three years of technology difference between these two camera models, one is full frame, the other APSC and a built-in flash. One is interchangeable lens and the other a fixed lens. One camera has dedicated ISO/SS dials (it’s not just the tactile experience but the fact you can use the X100V at a fixed speed and aperture and use the exposure compensation dial as a third variable right at your fingers), the Sony has “point & shoot” dials.
    The Sony has no mechanical shutter (that introduces distorsion or lack of bokeh at high shutter speeds).
    Fuji is somehow replicating it’s own Fujica cameras from the late sixties and seventies (Fujica Compact Deluxe). Sony has no history there.
    Finally, the X100F (and all x100 series I guess) have the manual focus indicator or distance indicator that shows you the depth of field (front and back of your subject that appears to be in focus), this one I think is meant to be a specialized tool for street photographers, mostly if you are shooting at f/8 or more (using hyperfocals and/or zone focus).
    Even if the X100V is a huge step in autofocus performance, video and a newer lens, most of the time these cameras are meant to be used like classic street cameras.
    I don’t think Sony is expecting for you to use the a7c like that, they are just replicating the Fuji look & feel like a gimmick.

I haven’t had any issues using electronic first curtain shutter with my Sony. Bokeh looks great. I like the look and feel of the X100V but it’s too small for my hands and is very useful for all the types of shooting I do. It’s a camera more about the experience of photography than the result or practical experience. But it’s a steep price for what you get.
