I had to visit one of my favourite actor's last Pub -again.
The late, gifted and colourful actor, Oliver Reed.
This is a tribute to him.
Location - 'The Pub' in Archbishop Street, on the beautiful and historic island of Malta.
The pub was open at the time I re-visited it for another pint or two and a chat in in 2023.
Ironically, some years ago, when I was studying in London, a University friend of mine had worked with Mark Lester later in life who was in 'Oliver !' the Movie and also The Prince and the Pauper.
Please see my other videos for other unrelated but interesting material.

In 1999, Reed was in Malta, filming Gladiator. On May 2, he got into a drinking contest in a pub in Valletta which was known as “The Pub.” The drinking contest was with British sailors and Reed won it. German lager, rum, whiskey, cognac, and then arm-wrestling five of those sailors. He beat the sailors but then had a heart attack, dying on the way to the hospital.

So you were enfatuated with a drunk and a sexist? My dear Karen, oh how the world has changed. When I was around thirteen, I fell in love with Liza Minellie. Still am. The snowflakery militia has tried to tear down the walls of all we hold dear. Oliver Reed was someone who dared to take on the establishment. A drunk and a sexist? But someone who'd keep you safe. Who'd fight for you and die in defence of your honour. A man, the like of which, is now now becoming an endangered species. I've got a drink now in my hand, and I'm raising it to the night. To the unfolding moon. And to the memory of Oliver Reed.

My fave Oliver Reed story: He's with friends in Cannes on the sea front and they walk into a restaurant. Waiter shows them to a table right in the window which Ollie doesn't like but the waiter is insistent as it will increase his business. They get seated and the waiter scuttles off. Fifteen minutes later they still haven't ordered and the whole group, including Ollie, are gesturing at the typically French waiter who's trying his hardest to ignore them. Suddenly Oliver gets up, takes his chair and launches it right through the window into the street. The waiter runs over and asks what happened? Oliver replies, 'can we see the menu please!'

I always enjoyed watching Ollie's films.
I saw many of them and enjoyed them all.
He made a chilling entrance in the film Oliver, didn't he ?
I started collecting autographs in 1999 or 2000, and the first star I requested a signed pic. was Oliver Reed. Sadly it turned out to be shortly before he died.
I didn't know that you should send a hard envelope to protect a picture in the post.
Oliver couldn't have had one either.
Ollie kindly sent me his latest publicity photograph, with an ordinary envelope (with an Irish post mark).
Unfortunately the picture arrived quite creased, and I foolishly threw it away.
A few weeks later Oliver Reed died.
    A very sad time.
I came across an art shop and when I told the man about the Oliver Reed photo, he said he would have been able to 'iron' the creases out.
The picture had been inscribed to me and signed by the great man !
Throwing it away, is one of my great regrets !
Glad to have the films on DVD though.

In fact i thought it sounded more like Michael Barrymore. We know that Ollie couldn't sing and he struggled with the songs in the film Tommy. I'm sorry that such a charismatic man and actor, was an alcoholic. It's interesting how people think it was cool to be a drunk. But it's not,its a disease that destroy people's life.

Thank you for sharing that comment. No doubt that many need help with their addictions before it's too late

He was an alcoholic all his life. Russel Crowe didn’t like him. I didn’t realise he had such a posh voice. Wasted life. 😢

Sadly, I think the drinking cost him his life and affected his career. Quality actor, but problems.

Poor man should have been given help to beat that horrendous addiction ! He was a true artist and great actor. Yet the fire water killed him and we are buzzing ? Wtf? Dickheads.
