I recall watching this on TV when it happened, the landing was filmed by waiting TV crews and I remember being amazed that so many survived this after it crashed and cartwheeled along the runway in flames. Remarkable airmanship by the pilots to even get it down at all given that basically all the hydraulics were destroyed by the engine failure
A similar accident happened in 2003 where an Airbus A300 was shot by a heat seeking missile at Baghdad and it hit the left aileron which caused a loss of control and the crew managed to land safely using differential thrust
@@nexgeo1 I don’t think it operated with a normal flight number since it wasn’t a regular cargo flight but was carrying mail for the us army. In the air crash investigation episode they used the call sign OO-DLL which is the aircraft’s registration. That’s probably what happened since using the aircraft’s registration as a call sign is common in general aviation.
The difference is that they still had control over the empennage. You can somewhat fly a plane using that without the ailerons. But this flight had no controls anymore. Still impressive that the Airbus landed of course. Well done by the pilots.
The fan disk of the Number 2 engine had elements in the titanium alloy that caused it to crack and eventually the stresses became so unbearable that it breaks. Absolutely unbelievable how that captain flew that plane with Absolutely no hydronics, got it to a run way ans landed it to save 185 people. A feat of amazing talent. Rip to all those he fought to save, but could not.
the fact that made the landing not entirely successful was that, at the beginning, right after the explosion of the №2 engine, the right wing came down and caused the plane to turn on that side, and when Captain Haynes corrected this bank by revving the right engine and putting the left engine at low idle this was maintained throughout the flight. But when the DC-10 checker put both engines at high idle that pitch problem came back in the end of flight and destabilize the approximation. Nice vídeo 👏👏
