  • HOW TO MAKE A PINBALL MACHINE: Popbumpers
    Just when you thought I wasn't going to add any - it's time to install a popbumper or two in our homebrew pinball machine! We'll talk about the different uses of popbumpers and then see where they make sense to use in our Led Zeppelin pinball machine.
    Table of Contents:
    0:00 Intro
    1:14 History of the pop bumper
    5:22 Bumper boredom
    6:29 Modern pop bumper layouts
    9:05 Bumper locations for LZ homebrew
    13:13 Template for drilling holes
    14:11 Grinding the ring
    15:12 Installing
    17:15 Wrap up

    Thanks for watching!!! I hope you found this helpful or interesting - if you did, please like and subscribe and even share this so other pinheads can find this series of videos.
    As always, give me some feedback on what you liked and didn't like about this video - if there's anything you'd like me to cover in more detail, lmk!!!
    If you haven't already, I challenge you to start building your own pinball machine, cuz why not!?!

    YES, another piball video. I stopped it right away and got myself some coffee first because I knew this video is going to be my favorite video of my total watch time today :) Thank you upfront and now I am going to watch it :) edit: thank you, I loved the video including the history part.

    Great segment Steve! I love how you walk people through your logic and are willing to "give things a try." I have learned with my own creation, there is a ton of experimentation that must go on in order to come to a final product that satisfies me.

    Williams called them "jet bumpers" and it was those bumpers and WMS' patented parallel winding flipper coil (that WMS sued Stern over) that made WMS games popular and fast

    Great vid! I will say that if you can get ahold of the DE style pops rather than WMS, they are a bit easier to work with. The WMS ones drive me nuts a bit - although they are slightly cleaner for something positioned out in a very visible area. For more traditional placement at the back of a game, the DE ones are great because you just drill a single large hole and the assembly stays completely together when you install and/or remove it.

    When I design layouts I have some issues fitting the pops. It's a lot harder to design a good bumper layout than classic shots to get it right. But since I love rollovers it's always nice in combo. (And I love them so much that I used magnets with 3 rollovers + a pop bumper area with 3 rollovers in my last design!)

    Love the video. I have to admit as soon as you said you wanted to put the pop above the sling I shouted "Don't do it!" I have a misaligned left orbit return sending the ball straight to the sling shots and all it does is make me frustrated. I hope your design works out better! At least if the playtesting doesn't work out, you can still have the other pops.

    Seems that modern pins use pop bumpers as an afterthought. Theyre usually swept way up in the corner somewhere should you get the ball there... and doesnt really effect overall gameplay. Just there to rack up a few extra points.

    Hello! I have never built a pinball machine. I am trying to build a bar in my house with pop bumpers, lights, ect. The idea is that it would choose a random drink after the ball bounces around inside the clear top table. Am I better off purchasing an old machine or purchasing parts and then building them into a table I build?

    • @thepinballroom
      @thepinballroom  Před 11 měsíci

      Really depends on what you're comfortable with. Starting with something that exists and modifying it is often a little easier. Sounds like an awesome project either way you go - don't underestimate the complexity and the time it'll take tho, either way it'll be a chunk of work

      @thepinballroom  Před 2 lety

    whats the best way to get into pinball cabinet making? Ive got this great idea for a more open multiplayfield course thats based off of time and time boosts than lives, but I have no Idea where to start. Ive got all the artistic talent, a 3D printer, and the idea, but how would I go about executing it?

    • @thepinballroom
      @thepinballroom  Před 2 lety

      Check out my first couple of videos if you haven't already - I talk a little bit about finding an existing cabinet or cutting out your own - you could also buy a pre cut one that you then assemble yourself - the ones available on the virtuapin site are good options - virtuapin.net/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=eentrdp2n76dliiuskvaso80a5

    great stuff. I was wondering where you went to... I'm up in Canada so temp of 52 is T shirt weather for me...lol I'm intending to 3d print pop bumpers as per a few others have done I've seen on youtube. One guy used conductive filament to sense the ball instead of the usual needle trigger system. My intention is to 3d print everything I possibly can.
