- In this video, the ol’ History Nerd unboxes and reviews the $40 Resistol Denison Bangora Straw cowboy hat, and compares it side-by-side to its distant cousin, the $125 Stetson Rancher Shantung Straw cowboy hat.
In the process, we’ll determine if the Denison is a keeper or a tosser, and we’ll throw in a little bit of the History Nerd’s irreverent humor along the way.

We need a full tour of the man cave! Looks like a ton of cool "stuff" you've collected.
I got this exact same hat in April, preparing for the warmer weather. The second I got it I thought to myself: "this thing is not going to breathe at all." Started wearing it when it got into the 70's and was already sweating my ass off just grocery shopping. It hit the 80's and I wore it a few times and now it's sitting in a box under my bed waiting for late autumn. Decided to get the Stetson Onyx for around the same price and couldn't be happier. Won't be good in the rain but it'll damn sure keep me cool when it ain't raining. I think my Bozeman would be cooler in the heat than the Denison.
Not sure I could pull off the Onyx, and the don't make it in my XXL size anyway...but I know for a fact this plastic hat ain't going to work for me. Thanks for watching the channel, Chief!
I have 4 trucks and do construction. I keep a 40 dollar hat in each one. And it is surprising how well they hold up.
I guess these plastic work hats do serve a purpose for the exact circumstances you specified, but I am still shocked at the plastic look and feel. Thanks for watching and for posting a comment.

Everybody needs a beater Bangora hat to wear while working in the yard!
I agree that everyone needs a beater hat, Brother, but I'd prefer a Shantung straw or a palm straw beater hat over this plastic, milk jug hat. For just a few bucks more, you can purchase a much better quality hat. Thanks for watching!
Well, if you don't want to wear it, it can double as a cereal bowl for some Frosted Flakes since it's woven so tight. Thanks for the review and side by side pics of the two. I'm just getting into hats and you're providing som good info.

The hat actually looks good on you. The Brim style is called West Texas Punch. Its more of a Rodeo style hat. That hat probably isnt good in the hot weather because it won’t breath so to speak. Its a yard work in cool weather hat, or a hat you keep in your Truck and you dont care what happens to it.
I call those tourists hats. People buy them in the gas stations when they're driving thru Texas or Oklahoma
I purchased a Justin for the same price point thats a nice looking hat. I bought it for basically yard work, construction, range trips. Its a rough and tumble hat so if something happens to it while Im working in the yard … oh well. It does have that plastic feeling you are describing. I suspect its some type of substance that perhaps water proofs the hat thats sprayed on. Maybe thats what gives it that plastic feel. My nicer more expensive Stetson straw hats do not have that plastic feel to them.
Not sure if it's a coating or if it's actually made of plastic...but I can assure you that the History Nerd ain't a fan of it in either case. Like you, I enjoy my nice Stetson straws...but this ain't of of 'em. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I'm sure, Trixie down at the Regal Beagle wont mind me in my bangora hat. ya know they sell cowboy hats at Walmart, they say Bud Light. shiny white plastic fantastic for ten dollars.
The hat looks good on you but knowing the quality you'd never feel good about it. When I was a teenager my mother called me a gas station cowboy because that's where my buddies and I hung out. Back in the 60's I'd have been a cool cat wearing that hat and know one would have known it was a dime store hat.
I've always said wear the hat that you like and let other people's opinions be damned, but you have to feel confident in what you wear...and I would feel like I'm wearing a salad bowl on my had with this plastic hat.
I have recently purchased a Stetson 5000x straw hat and I will say history nerd it is worth the review and I think u would like it
The 5000X is truly a fine looking hat, but often hard to find, especially in the 7-3/4 size that my watermelon head demands. I will go hunting for one. Many thanks for the suggestion and for watching the channel.

You've got to get out more, Chief. It can be used in multiple ways with multiple meanings. Someone or something can be a "fartknocker" or can engage in "fartknocking." In all honesty, even I do not know precisely what the term means...but it sure is fun to say it.

Have you got the Stetson diamond Jim shantung straw hat. I’ve been looking at that one and the royal flush.
I do not. Because I am a big fella with a giant head, I think I need a hat with a bigger crown and brim. If I were going to get a hat the size of the Royal Flush, for instance, I'd probably go with a fedora or panama hat rather than a cowboy hat, but that is 100% purely personal preference. Both the Royal Flush and Diamond Jim are nice looking hats, but I just don't think I could pull them off. Many thanks for watching the channel!
Sad Resistol was a well respected name that went the cheap route.
Ive got a Resistol McCintock, about 20 yrs old. Love it, getting pretty shabby now. Thinking Im about old enough for a Open Road now. Nearly 70. Have you heard of the Winchester Hat Co. In Winchester, Tn. Check it out. Greetings from Sand Mountain. Just subbed.
I'm 55 years old and own four open roads - a 6X felt, two straws, and a hemp - so age isn't an issue for wearing one. I was in the Sand Mountain area a couple of weeks ago for the June Jam in Fort Payne. Many thanks for the sub, and I'll take a look at the Winchester Hat Co. God bless, Bubba.
Last year I went shopping (not many western shops around me) They had these plastic hats all over the store and I was in shock how terrible they looked. Owner handed me a black palm leaf straw and it was day and night. 1000 times better in looks and feeling. I bought it and still wearing as I type but still looking for a Shantung hat.
I’m on my phone so I don’t really see the difference between the Stetson Rancher and the Resistol.
I want a Rancher, I will have to order online but before I do I want to make sure it does not have this plastic look, to me, even high end shantung hat have this distinct “plastic” look because of the shellac used on them.
What’s the very best and natural looking shantung hat I can get for around $100-$130?
I absolutely hate the plasticky look and feel but palm lead looks a bit rough sometimes. Many thanks
The Resistol is terrible, and if it ain't made of plastic, I'll kiss your ass in Macy's window on Thanksgiving Day. I am a big fan of the Stetson Rancher, as I noted in this video, and it does not have the plastic look, but is, instead, a high-quality hand woven hat. If you're willing to go the western crossover hat route, the Open Road shantung straw in 10X is also a great option. Pretty much all of the hats I currently own are reviewed on the channel, so scroll through my videos and see if anything tickles your fancy.
@@historynerdsmancave7567 Thank you. I am 100% western hat not really into other style. I have a panama style hat and barely wear it. So just to make sure, the Stetson Rancher does not have any type of lacquer/ shellac on it? Anything that would give it even the slightest plastic shine or feel that they all seem to have whenever I look online.
I absolutely loathe that look, I was even considering getting a light coloured felt like a silverbelly for summer despite the warmth.
@@SilencioFilm I live in Alabama, so a felt hat in the summer is a scary thought. I think all Shantung straw hats are going to have some shellac or coating on it to keep them from wilting in the rain and when you sweat, but I don't find my Rancher to look like a toy plastic hat like this Dennison. Sounds like palm straw is more in your wheelhouse, and some of those hats look quite nice. Check out my video on the Stetson Square palm straw cowboy hat.

I saw your video on the Stetson square and I got to say it’s a nice hat but I already have a palm leaf hat so I wanted to get something different. The Rancher based on your review will probably be my choice or a similar quality in the Resistol line up. I think Resistol might fit my head better. I have the Stetson Powder river and it’s a bit too round for my head. Heard that Resistol is more long oval. Anyway, thanks for your time. Great videos!
I value your opinion...I live in a rural town in central Washington where people wear cowboy hats. But, I am not a cowboy or a cowboy wanna be or a rancher. I don't wear boots either BUT I want in my collection a Western hat that is not goofey for someone citified. Is the OPEN ROAD my only option? Please advise. Thank you.
The Open Road is really a crossover hat - it can be worn in western environs or at fancy pants soirees, which is why so many presidents and politicos wore it. You might want to check out my video on the Stetson Seneca. It's not an overly large western hat and doesn't make a big statement like the Stetson Rancher.
