- The Hymn "The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is ended", St Clement, Clement Scholefield (1839-1904)
arranged by James O’Donnell (b 1961), John Ellerton (1826-93), sung on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's State Funeral Service in Westmister Abbey, September 19, 2022.
Lyrics :
The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
the darkness falls at thy behest;
to thee our morning hymns ascended,
thy praise shall sanctify our rest.
We thank thee that thy Church unsleeping,
while earth rolls onward into light,
through all the world her watch is keeping,
and rests not now by day or night.
As o’er each continent and island
the dawn leads on another day,
the voice of prayer is never silent,
nor dies the strain of praise away.
The sun that bids us rest is waking
our brethren ’neath the western sky,
and hour by hour fresh lips are making
thy wondrous doings heard on high.
So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never,
like earth’s proud empires, pass away;
thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever,
till all thy creatures own thy sway.

The music and words of the hymns chosen by Her Majesty for her own funeral and committal service were beautiful and were from all corners of her United Kingdom. Listening to the words, Her Majesty tells us that life moves on, nothing lasts forever, we leave this world as we arrived and all crowns and kingdoms eventually come to an end apart for the Kingdom of Heaven. Our beloved Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's passing leaves a massive hole in hearts all around the world, she may be gone, but she will never be forgotten. May God's angels keep her safe for eternity.
The descant is the most powerful part.
Having this beautiful hymn at the dads funeral on Wednesday this coming week
Sorry for your loss. You’ll see him again. Jesus our kind God gave the ultimate penalty so we can have life indeed!
He is singing now in the presence of God.
Rest in paradise queen ❤
Amen 🙏👑💜⚜️🇬🇧🕯🕊

May Her Majesty rest in peace
I swore fealty, loyalty and obesiance to Her Majesty, and honestly thought she'd outlast me.
I swore by Almighty God, do solemnly, and truly declare and affirm, that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully defend Her Majesty, Her Heirs and Successors, in Person, Crown and Dignity against all enemies, and will observe and obey all orders of Her Majesty, Her Heirs and Successors, and of the generals and officers set over me. So help me God
RIP your majesty, it was my honour.
You and me both. Politicians take note!
I remember watching this live and I was very much unphased until this moment and needless to say I sprung a leak. This was a beautiful day where this country came together in mourning and respect, if only for the briefest of times. God bless our King and our departed sovereign lady.
I was already crying throughout the whole thing anyway and everyone in Wales has never seen me cry on live before but they have now. I don’t feel like a good Queen to them when they think I am. I was only 20 years old when I took the role mind
This was a beautiful hymn at Her late Majesty’s funeral. Lump in throat at the opening stanza thinking about all her years of service and the reality that her day has ended.
This song was in the movie Oh my God, and I can't stop singing it.
Played this hymn yesterday at my grandma’s funeral service. It is such a comforting beautiful hymn
The descant is powerful ❤😊

Yea!!
Do you know where can I get the descant?
May Her Majesty rest in peace...All Hail Queen Elizabeth II..
One of our father's favorite hymns. We remember British Army World War II veteran Wendell Mckenzie Christian and the old St. George Anglican Church at Roseau Dominica. Great send-off for the Queen. May her soul RIP.
In loving memory of HM Queen Elizabeth II ❤
May she rest in peace
You can clearly hear the heaviness in the singing. 😢

Spirit filled hymn❤️
Such a beautiful hymn!
Your Majesty!!❤️❤️
We love you!!🇬🇧🇬🇧
Beautiful hymn and beautifully done. So appropriate for Her Majesty! This hymn is to be done at my memorial service.
When the words: "the voice of prayer is never silent" are about to bring James undone, and he raises his left hand to his eyes, Edward sitting in the row in front notices, and turns. This family looks out for each other.
At 1:57 you see the now James, Earl of Wessex starts to rub his eyes, it shouldn't be forgotten that it is well known Prince Edward was really cherished by his mother, as this son was the only child of hers not to go through family scandal and divorce. Edward's son and daughter were very close to the Queen. Lady Louise was close to Prince Philip and James was close to the Queen. No wonder the lad was tearful.

Their whole family were emotional at the end of this hymn. I remember in the broadcast a few handkerchiefs being passed around by Edward and Sophie.

Can anyone tell me where can I practice this descant ? Do I have to buy it?
The English can do pomp but they simply can't master grace. The final choir embellishments are in really bad taste. So glad she didn't have to hear that.
They aren’t ‘embellishments’ it’s the descant sung on the last verse of a lot of hymns and Christmas carols! It was beautifully done! Also it the British not the English!
