  • Hey everyone I have had these annoying electrical issues for a while on my truck and I have FINALLY resolved them.
There is a ground point on the truck known by gm as G218. My issue was that the sound deadening material was trapped under this ground wire.
I want to say thanks to a fellow youtuber named Robert Corona. Without his video and the fact that his dealership mentioned this ground in his paperwork I probably would still have this issue.
After cutting this rubber material and redoing the ground I havent had this issue again in almost a week.
Below are a few links to a few pages I found more information about this G218 ground. Thanks for watching and I hope this is helpful for some of you with this issue.
This link shows more info about the trouble codes you will receive and it also shows the ground G218 not very well detailed on the location but it shows it.
    gm.oemdtc.com/3194/reduced-pow...
On this link if you scroll down to where it talks about the grounds, find G218 and it shows a rough images of the top of the dash for the location and it shows a schematic of what all goes to this ground and you will see what I was talking about in the video.

How is this not a recall??? This is crazy. We need to make this a recall. Not only a potential fire hazard, but undoubtedly a accident prone related issue.

Tony Lester-Thank you so much ! Our 2014 has been giving us fits. Doing everything yours was, and also resetting all the "Best mileage" numbers, when it would act up. My husband checked/cleaned/tightened all the grounds and feeds under the hood, and then we took it for a ride...Within minutes it acted up. He was so disheartened. I found your video, and shared it. The drivers side was bolted down on the insulation, he removed the ground, cut the insulation and reinstalled. It has been perfect ever since. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

THANK YOU for posting this - at 151,000 miles my 2014 Silverado started acting up... Stabilitrak notice coming on, radio turning off, A/C power diminishing, wipers randomly coming on, when hazards on the A/C would coincide with the tempo of the hazards, and today my truck shut off when turning left into a parking spot... I first noticed issue last week when towing my camper, so I thought there may be a short in my trailer wiring... you have saved me time and money and frustration... looking forward to tackling this project later today!

Had this issue on my 2014 Silverado for about 3 months. Finally took into the Chevrolet dealership to try and figure it out. They told me they diagnosed it and said it was the negative cable (ground) they recommended replacing the cable to fix the issue. Quoted me 5
$514 to replace that cable and including a 180$ diagnosis fee.. I said no thank you did some research . Came up on this video and tried it myself. So far no stability, park assist off, steering reduced drive with care codes pop up. My steering had been slightly more stiff and shifting from drive to reverse the steering would go hard momentarily. Now it feels even smoother and does not get stiff . Drove it for a few hours nothing has came up hopefully the issue is fixed. Unfortunately I did pay 180 for the diagnosis since they told me my warranty didn’t cover that specific issue. Wish I would have seen this video before I took it in. GREAT VIDEO.

Stabilitrak, steering wheel jerk, lights flickering, etc. I just had the power steering recall serviced today (#17276 I believe), and less than 5 miles later, the Stabilitrak warning/fail happened turning into a parking space. I cannot thank you enough for posting this, and also to Robert Corona for posting his findings as well. Stay tuned, I will try this fix on my truck... I'll let you know.

My 2016 Sierra power steering would lock up while driving. Research showed the the same issue in the’14 and ‘15 were recalled. The dealership said the diagnostic code showed my power steering computer module needed to be replaced. $2850. I let them replace it but also, told them it was electrical and that something else would come up once that was replaced. Sure enough, right after I left the dealership(40 miles) the check engine light came on…they said it was the oil pump. 50,000 miles on the truck.
I’m thinking the two of us are definitely not the only owners with these problems. They only recalled the ‘14 and ‘15 when customers complained. I wish I could get all ‘16 sierra owners, that have had these same problems, together. This is an issue GMC should take seriously.

Thanks for posting this. I bought a used 2014 Silverado a few months back. I had a similar issue to your steering problem. My steering wheel wouldn't jerk out of my hand but the dash did the same thing as yours. It would also dim the dash and turn the AC off for a few seconds. Then everything would come back on.
Searching around i found a sheet saying to fix the G218 ground but couldn't find where it was. I appreciate you saving me the time of pulling the whole dash out as I would have gone that direction. I will update you on my progress.
    Update:
Well I took the dash apart and checked the ground. Mine looked good and tight. The sound matting material was pressing the bolt but not causing a bad connection. Later the problem came back on a trip out of town. My turn signal would trigger the stabilitrack warning. I pulled over and my truck dash went totally blank and the engined died. It would not start. I found a bad ground connection at the battery. The terminal looked perfect with no corrosion. When I touched negative connection the truck power came back and the connector moved on the battery. I tightened it up and all was good.
The bad ground was my issue. It was just at the battery rather than under the dash. Your video really helped with the trouble shooting of the problem. Thanks again!

I have a 2014 chevy silverado and i started to have the same problems. Lights flicking, abs light, traction control and steering problems.
I followed the instructions to this video and had no results so im guessing didn't have the same ground issue as this guy. But it got me thinking and Tonight i found a ground wire behind the passenger front wheel. I took it off and the dash lights came on. I put it back and the dash lights go off. It was acting like a switch. Where its grounded to the truck its exposed to all road grime and weather. I cleaned it all up and put it back and so far no problems. I hope thats the problem.

Power steering going out when trying to park. Engine even shut off once while parking as well as while driving down the road. I had the same issue as most in this thread. I got it fixed at a Chevy dealership from the recall issue involving power steering. It was fine for about a year and happened again twice except my truck completely shut off while turning left at a very slow speed. (Both occurrences after driving 4 to 6 hours straight) Next time I took it to a different Chevy dealership (since it was a recall) they told me it was only my battery nothing else and made me buy a new one from them. They didn't believe a word I said and basically acted like I was an idiot. I have my case number from speaking with corporate and don't want to sell it in fear of the next owner getting injured.
2 months after the battery replacement, which is right now, I am having issues where my battery stays at 14v once I crank it until about 10 minutes into the drive when it lowers to around 13 and remains that way for a long period of time. Randomly, it will return to 14 while driving for about 5 minutes then lower again. I'm starting to get very concerned from how terrifying my 3 experiences of complete shutoff occurred. Any ideas? Thanks to everybody who has commented earlier and thanks for the video! Sorry for the long comment.

update... I checked the ground point in this video and it was good to go. There was no interference from any insulation. I loosened the nut and re-tightened it anyway just to rule out that possibilty. The next day the problem came back... After looking over all my wiring under the hood, I looked at my battery. It is only about 9 months old, but since I was being thorough, I had to check it. Sure enough, the negative terminal on the battery was loose. It was on enough to allow it to start and charge, but any bump or vibration could cause it to loose connection for a split second. Which is what I believe caused all the problem shown in the video. The negative terminal nut and bolt were defective. I couldn't tighten the nut all the way and had to replace the nut and bolt. (guy from autozone installed the battery) The truck has been running great for the past two days. A good lesson for me to check the simple stuff first. Oh well... I still think this is a great video though and very helpful!

The radio in my 2014 Sierra will come on all by its self and the Volt
Meter seems to run on the high side of 14 volts then it will drop to
just over 9 volts. Also the truck seems to run like cr*p. I followed
your instructions and found the drivers side was fine but I'm glad I
checked the passenger side because the insulation was indeed crimped
under the washer and nut post. I took it apart and cleaned it all up and
put it all back together, so time will tell. The volt meter still was on
the high side of 14 volts, however, it will settle to 14 volts but I'll re-post if there's good news on the other issues after I've driven it for a while. Thanks for your help, much appreciated. btw, my truck doesn't have all the bells and whistles, it's pretty much factory equipped.

I would love to connect all of the dots. Certainly, dealerships will not even try to get to the root of the problem. They have run 3 different diagnostics and each time came back with something different. Their only answer was to replace the power steering module, then, replace the oil pump, then, the battery. Luckily, I stopped with the power steering.
After doing hours of research, it seems to be way too common of a problem, in the same vehicles over several years. Someone needs to be held accountable.
When I asked for the defective part that they replaced-they told me that GM charges them $150 core fee if they don’t send it back to the manufacturer. I was then, told they fix the part and put that part in another vehicle. What?!
Don’t think I’ll be purchasing another GM product.
