This KOMMO-O + ESPEON strategy is WILD... • Pokemon Scarlet/Violet VGC Battles

  • Kommo-O is now legal in the VGC format after the DLC and can be an interesting sweeper thanks to its signature move, Clangorous Soul. This team enables Kommo-O through support like Fake Out Iron Hands, Fling King's Rock Tornadus, and Sinistcha! The team also has one really unique trick: Psych Up Espeon, which is able to copy Kommo-O's boosts and deal large amounts of damage with Stored Power!

    Nice to have my team showcased yet again on the one and only CybertronVGC:)
    The idea of the team was to try bring back good old Extreme Evoboost with Kommo-o.
    I loved the Eevee tech in gen 7 so much and although it may not be the best strategy in terms of VGC, it could be the most fun one.
    Fling King's Rock was something Giovanni Costa used to do with Whimsicott in his famous Eevee teams and that's why I put it here on Tornadus.
    Hope you all have fun!

      How about using Falinks instead of Kommo-O ? Falinks has no retreat, which is an omniboost at the cost of not being able to switch out, could it work?

    • @PokeBattleLab
      @PokeBattleLab Před 8 měsíci +5

      @@maxhigh-omnitcg8463 I'm sorry but Falinks is just bad and worse than Kommo-O in almost every way possible. It lacks damage, bulk, and on top of that Clang Soul can be used multiple times while no retreat being only once. Dragon type is also beneficial in multiple ways too. I think it wouldn't work competitively, not at all.

    Hi Aaron! I was your opponent in game 3! Thank you for the game!
    Honestly, seeing that the taunt had nothing to do with my haze was jaw dropping as I totally thought you read it. I honestly thought that was going to be a great turn 1 for me where you tailwind clangorous soul and then I tailwind haze ending in equal speed and Kommo-O chipped with no boosts. I almost gave up after turn two but as I have heard you say hundreds of times you cannot just give up! So I started playing out of my mind to get that comeback. The protect on Milotic for your double up to prevent haze and conserving tera were the two opportunities I was waiting for and was able to play to them!
    I cannot tell you how much it means to me to be able to have a match of mine featured on road to ranked! Especially, a victory with my favorite Pokémon Milotic as MVP! Your commentary in the 25th invitational with all the world champs was what inspired me to play as the way you broke things down allowed me to understand what was going on and think I could do this too. And I have always considered R2R my teacher and have not missed a video since. Thanks for all you do and how much you have taught me. Good luck in all your endeavors especially finishing your Masters. I finished mine this year and I know how great it is once you cross that finish line. Hope to play you again!

    QOTD: the Eeveelutions could benefit from signature attacks. Some examples, Flareon gets a swords dance that self burns so it doesn't need to carry a flame orb, Jolteon gets a protect that paralyzes physical attackers, Vaporeon gets a heal move that heals the target Pokemon for 1/8 - 1/4 their max hp at the end of each turn for 4 turns including the turn it was used. I think something along these lines would be fun and give the Pokemon a competitive niche

    QOTD: Interestingly enough, I think the easiest way to buff them would be to give them an Eeveelution specific "Terablast" like move. 120 Base Power, 100 Accuracy, and the type is the same as the Eeveelution (Electric for jolteon, Psychic for Espeon, and so on). Also, just like terablast, the Pokemon's stats determine whether its physical or special. This means that Eevee also gets the move, except its normal type.

    Woohoo! New Aaron vid just in time for me to watch while doing dishes and making curry! Thanks as always ❤ I'm always excited to see Psych Up sets work.

  • @Norcoo
    @Norcoo Před 8 měsíci +2

    QOTD: I love the eeveelutions and I think the changes below would make them all get some more niche in VGC. I think they all could use a new Hidden Ability. Simply make their current Hidden Ability and normal second ability. Then add 1 or 2 moves for either coverage or utility.
    - Umbreon: Dark Aura as Hidden Ability. Knock Off and Follow Me, thus making it a really Bulky support which would work as a counterpart to Cresselia which focuses more on speed control. I doubt many would go for Dark Aura instead of Inner Focus to prevent flinches but it would create a cool niche where your attacks suddenly feel threatening. I thought about Pransker for it but.. I think that would take away too much from Sableye and Grimsnarl so hence why I went a different route.
    - Espeon: Psychic Surge as Hidden Ability. It already got decent stats and an interesting movepool, so no new moves here.
    - Flareon: Drought, as Hidden Ability. Thus giving it a niche support role thanks to it being another weathersetter. With it's lackluster HP and Defence, I don't see this being an issue. I wouldn't mind it having Wild Charge and seeing Superpower return to it's move set. It already got plenty of support moves so just adding some coverage to it's already excellent Attack stat would go a long way.
    - Vaporeon: Drizzle as Hidden Ability. Eeveelutions lack hazard removal, so I think giving Vaporeon Defog would be pretty niice. Since Vaporeon is fairly tanky and are one of the few that still got access to Scald I don't wanna suggest too much here.
    - Jolteon: Electric Surge as Hidden Ability. I really miss HP Ice on Jolteon, I think giving it Ice Beam would be too good, I hate how situational Weather Ball is and Tera Ice just makes it soo vunerable. Soo I think Icy Wind would make for an excellent attack for Jolteon. I mean it's already frail and seeing more speed control for eeveelutions would be interesting.
    Leafeon: Grassy Surge as Hidden Ability. It got Knock Off back which is good, but I've always wanted it to learn Leech Life just so you can make a Bulky Leafeon set. Soo much resist bug anyway so it shouldn't be an issue. Also a ground coverage move would be cool for for when you don't run Grassy Surge. I'm thinking either High Horsepower, Stomping Tantrum or Earthquake, though Earthqauke might be too much.
    Glaceon: Snow Warning as Hidden Ability. Now Glaceon makes better use of it's already fantastic Defence. It's health and speed is still lackluster so I think giving it Aurora Veil, then finish it off with the coverage move of Earth Power to make up for losing HP Ground.
    Sylveon: Misty Surge as Hidden Ability. Ok, that ability is just for troll set of Choice Scarf Misty Explosion. The only thing Sylveon needs is Mystical Fire. I think Sylveon was in a perfect spot in Sword/Shield and I am still frustrated that they removed Mystical Fire from it's movepool.
    I would also consider a +5 stat buff. So their stats go from 130, 110, 95, 65, 65, 60 to 130, 110, 95, 70, 65, 60. Could be slightly higher, but some of them already preform decently so I don't wanna push it too much.

    I think all of the eeveelutions should get one good coverage move for the types that have eeveelutions, so all of them would have one good fire, electric, water, psychic, dark, ice, grass, and fairy coverage move or for umbreon a good support move from one of those types (will-owisp, haze, eerie impulse, etc).

    I'll always enjoy an Eeveelution video. This was a fun trick to see in action. It's so rare to see Stored Power in VGC, yet it makes so much sense on this set. This would be even stronger with a Shell Smash partner since Stored Power only counts increased stat stages, so Shell Smash provides 6 stat stages in total. I don't know how well that'd work in practice, but it's an idea. Torterra did just get Shell Smash.
    QotD: Pixilate variants is definitely the most popular idea since it's just such a strong ability. I definitely support that. However, I'd also like to think of a more defensive approach. So, I'd give all Eeveelutions access to Follow Me and a unique ability.
    Evolutionary Adaptation: Draw and become immune to all moves of the same typing as yourself. When hit by a move of the same typing, boost your highest stat by one stage.
    This gives them all Lightning Rod variants as their unique ability that also uses Boss Boost's stat choice for greater versatility.

    as you mentioned, making kommo-o faster than espeon might be a better idea than wasting a turn protecting and leaving kommo-o vulnerable. and if you protect, the magic bounce won't activate. i would go for yawn on espeon instead of protect, that could give you another option if you had to protect kommo turn 1
    and yawn is always great when they try to setup a dance, and the bounce synergies really well with it, protecting you against taunt
    one possible scenario could be them leading kingambit after seeing kommo and setup swords.
    another could be them leading bax to either threat oneshot your kommo or forcing a tera. you could protect and yawn it, then go for an iron head.

    • @cornonjacob
      @cornonjacob Před 8 měsíci

      Yeah, and flamigo isn't dead weight if it can't get the boosts. I think the main issue with that though is you're getting double type overlap with tornadus, iron hands and Kommo-o, and with psych-up you have a bit more control over when the boosts happen. Having both Kommo-o and Flamigo be weak to flutter when you can only tera 1 mon is almost certainly the reason you don't want to use it

  • @TrxPsyche
    @TrxPsyche Před 8 měsíci

    I've seen some comments saying that giving each Eeveelution a version of pixelate for their type would be great, and while I agree, I actually don't think Espeon needs it. Espeon already has strong psychic attacks, so it isn't actually boosting all that much.
    For Espeon specifically, I think they only need two things to be extremely good. A new ability, Solar Power, and the move Mystical Fire. Being the Sun Pokemon, it's thematic for Espeon to get a boost with the Sun out, and the damage each turn barely matters since Espeon is so frail. This also eliminates a need for set up moves like Calm Mind since they'd get a free 50% special attack boost, allowing for much more damage at a much easier cost. Combine it with a choice item or Life Orb and Espeon becomes a walking nuke button.
    Mystical Fire would also be amazing for coverage, as it's Espeon's downfall as an attacker. Psychic, Shadow Ball are basically must haves on Espeon, along with Dazzling Gleam. But with the introduction of Tera forms, Espeon can change to Tera Fairy to have a stronger single target fairy attack in Tera Blast. You could also run Tera Fire to replace the lack of Mystical Fire, but Fairy is a better defensive type for the Pokemon looking to actually hurt Espeon, potentially letting it survive a Sucker Punch before blasting the opponent away. Mystical Fire would also get a boost in the Sun, putting it on par power wise with their other attacks.
    Espeon wants to be a strong pure attacker so badly but suffers from extreme frailty and subpar move pool, and none of it's abilities help it in this matter. Those two changes I believe would make Espeon at the very least on par with other special attackers while also having more team synergy.

    The Eeveelutions seem perfect for summoning weather and terrain as their abilities. They fill every basic weather and terrain general type save for sandstorm (maybe basic Eevee or a new rock or ground type evolution?) Umbreon I suppose would be stuck with the less than extraordinary Cloud Nine, but it surely has its uses in denying or removing weather effects in VGC.

    Grass Pelt Leafeon might have a niche one could build around and make a crazy physical wall
    Refriferate Glaceon seems like the play, but I was thinking of Slush Rush to help it's speed.
    I'm not sure if Sylveon needs a buff.

    QOTD: Rather than an Eeveelution, what I would like to see is a Paradox Eevee that would get moves out of all of his would-be evolutions, and also have Conversion so as he can type change into any of its moves.
    Its type would still be Normal, and its stats would be 570, as the other Paradox Pokémon, but distributed evenly, 95 in all its stats. Purely regular, as all things should be, so it doesn't demerit any of its non-Paradox version's evolutions.

  • @mohbius2
    @mohbius2 Před 8 měsíci +1

    flamigo and oricorio would be better partners for this imo, since they’ll instantly copy the stats. easier to swap sinistcha around then

  • @kenw.1520
    @kenw.1520 Před 8 měsíci +4

    QOTD: Each Eeveelution gets the move based off of them from Let's Go: Eevee. With Each Eeveelution having a signature move, that should help quite a bit. After that, maybe each one gets a +20 to their overall BST. Oh, and of course, we could finally get "Partner Eevee" as a special Eevee like "Hat Pikachu" and Partner Eevee could get all of the Let's Go moves.

  • @inexorableveracity
    @inexorableveracity Před 8 měsíci

    QOTD: I dunno if there's a good blanket solution for all of them. Maybe they get a single third evolution that they all evolve into (normal type!) so that they could all run eviolite
    I don't think the eveelutions are really power crept much, their stats are just in weird places and might have wasted abilities/limited move pools. 525 base stats seems fairly competitive.
    for flareon specifically:
    spatk - 50
    speed - 15
    hp + 30
    def + 20
    spdef + 15
    give it access to wild charge and/or wave crash and/or head smash
    remove guts and replace with rock head.
    reckless as a third ability
    It would be fun to see it in trick room.

    I haven’t seen the video yet, but I saw the part where Aaron was talking about Psych Up on Espeon with Kommo-o. Idk if it was mentioned further in the vid, or in the comments, but Female Indeedee having access to Follow Me and Psych Up would be awesome on this kind of team. The combination of Follow Me and Psych Up next to a Clangorous Soul Kommo-o creates so many scenarios it would be hard to deal with I feel even in a BO3. Does the Indeedee Psych Up while Kommo-o attacks? Does it follow me while Kommo-o attacks? Does Indeedee potentially protect while Kommo-o goes for another clangorous soul? Who knows?!

    QOTD : Buff one of their 65 BS to something like 80 ; and give them a third ability available.
    Like, I would be really interested to see how a Slush rush mon with 130 SpAtk could perform (especially if we buff its Speed BS to 80).
    There would probably be better choices for a lot of them, but just giving them weather/terrain inducing abilities or abilities boosting a stat under a terrain/weather would be interesting for most of them :
    - In gen9, the Swif swim mons have 100 BS SpAtk or less ; whereas Vaporeon has 110. So it might actually be interesting, giving Vaporeon a very different role that what we usually see.
    - Flareon with a Chlorophyll-like ability should be decent.
    - Jolteon actually has same Speed and higher SpAtk than TapuKoko. So it might not be that inferior to Koko as an Electric surge mon. And as long as Koko isn't in the game, the only alternative being Pincurchin...
    - Similarly, Espeon has same SpAtk and better Speed than TapuLele, but it sounds less convincing... Maybe a new Ability doubling its speed under Psychic terrain would be better.
    - Already spoken about Slush rush Glaceon, would love to try this.
    - Misty surge never sounds super sexy on paper, but pretty sure Sylveon could make a decent use of it.
    - Grassy surge Leafeon would immensely suffer the comparison with Rillaboom. So this one is harder... It already has two weather-related abilities tho, maybe something else would be better, like Technician ?
    - Umbreon's type isn't really related to a weather or a terrain. Maybe just give it a Cloud-Nine-like ability. Might not be much of a buff, but not sure I really want to buff Umbreon anyway.

    29:00 does it make sense for Empoleon not to run competitive on a defensive set? I don’t know that torrent is a better ability for a defensive pokémon, yeah you can activate it more readily than on an offensive set (unless you are fast and running sub), but it is still harder to activate in vgc I feel than competitive, the one upside being that your opponents may not bring their intimidates and other stat drops because they expect competitive and then you at least have torrent, but that’s assuming they decide your physical attackers are less dangerous than Empoleon at plus 2. The point of competitive is you make them make that choice, with this you just have to hope they don’t pick intimidate, but it is definitely an interesting idea.
    If it was a better ability that let you bluff competitive with a mostly physical team it might be better, like maybe storm drain and you run some water weak pokémon as well as physical attackers and they have to guess which it is, that would be cool, if frustrating to play against… would have to be off meta to be cool.

    QOTD In TCG there are Eeveelotion specific tools (held items) you can use. I think giving them specific hold items would be good.
    Let’s say “Fire Amulet” for Flareon. Limits Flareon to only using attacking moves that are Fire but increases STAB to x2.
    Pokemon specific moves are also always interesting too.
