And while his skill at drawing iconic superheroes like the Fantastic Four, Thor, and Fourth World books like Jimmy Olsen and New Gods has become iconic, his experimental collages are less well-known. So, letâs try and replicate his techniques as we analyze and explain a world of limitless dimensions: the history of Jack Kirbyâs comic book collage art!

Huge shoutout to everyone who supports me on Patreon for making this long video about an extremely niche subject! It would mean the world to me if you supported my channel over at patreon.com/NerdSync đ
Happy birthday to you and Jack âThe Kingâ Kirby
A small technical issue. There is something wrong with audio/video synchronization when you talk. It's quite prominent in the segment around 15:0 mark. The desync is very small, but I think that audio is coming ahead of the video. This makes it more noticeable.
Since the speed of sound is relatively low, our brains are less sensitive when the audio is lagging behind video.
Well, maybe I'm wrong...
Couldnât you talks about the Scooby Doo comics? You can not only talk about comic books, but you also have every reason to mention Scooby Doo in the same video!
Hey Scott! Happy be-lated birthday! Quick question what television do you have in your background? Thanks.
HAPPY BORTHDAY! Loved the art man, I donât have money but I do have a free black hole⌠it has eaten my dog⌠help.
It's amazing Kirby was able to do this without fingers, and defeat Meta Knight and King Dedede as well.
Seeing a youtuber I watch in the comment section of another youtuber I watch is like seeing a celebrity show up in an episode of a Disney show.
Maybe the Jack ability gave him fingers?
Yeah? How could we play Kirby in D&D?
Well, you eat the right monster...
Yeah? How could we play Jack Kirby in D&D?
Richards? The greatest mind of the Marvel Universe?! FOOL! WHAT OF DOOM?!
I am really digging your Kirby
Doom put a burning mask onto his own face nobody can convince me heâs not a dumbass

Kirby was the "Pop-Art Picasso". Always loved his Psychedelic collage work. 60 years later, this is Jack's world & we're just living in it.
Agreed
I completely agree!

Because Scott feels better doing this kind of videos and it shows. I love this man and his passion.
i agree, i'd noticed myself feeling more excitement when i saw a new video today, somehow i missed it till now. If they continue videos like this i'll actually bother with notifications.
The ART
You most certainly are an artist. Personally, I find your perspective moving and insightful. The art you create reflects that and the world is a better place for it. Thanks for sharing!
I completely agree!
Beautifully said
I figured if I butter him up enough, he'll eventually show me his Bob Ross tribute painting. Not that he doesn't deserve the accolades. He's amazing in his chosen medium. But I wanna see his "collage" work. I want to see the other things that his mind holds dear... Look, Scott is bae and I'd take a bullet for him. đ
I was so concerned we wouldn't see your art at the end, but it's fantastic!
haha I couldnât pull that trick twice haha
When I watched the Netflix doc I said every few seconds, "yeah, I already knew that." Yours was still better. The Netflix one didn't even have anyone in costume!
Love waking up on Sunday to get schooled by Scott!
I've been waiting for this one since the Jimmy episodeâŚ
You're gonna love this, Scott. The recommended video was about how the live action Scooby Doo movies are in the wrong order.
my channel is just scoob now haha
@@NerdSyncProductions and soon, so will all of youtube. it will then have to change its name to scoobtube.
Bro I can already tell this is gonna be good.
You pour a lot of effort in to these and there the highlights of my day.
Thanks
Thanks so much!!!
My late wife, prior to her death from cancer, did a great number of collages. The sheer output was impressive, and its own kind of artistic statement.
A few years ago I was lucky enough to get to see an exhibition of Kirby's art at Cal State University Northridge and as incredible as his drawn pages were, the collages were stunning. Forget hi res scans, seeing them in person truly puts them on another level.
You should sell a version of the collage as merch, I'd definitely buy one.
So would I! With today's printing, surely it would translate better than Jack's did. Dude, I ABSOLUTELY want that on a t-shirt, or even just a print to hang on my wall!đ
"sci-fi-spy-thri" lmao I barely started the video and I love it already!
Iâll take your videos over Netflix everyday Scott! Thanks for showing me a phase of my fave comic artist Iâve never knew before âşď¸
Man not even halfway but Iâm just so angry with Marvel and Stan Lee! Like this is not exclusive to them but artistsâ not getting their due either in recognition or compensation makes my blood boil, no wonder Kirby left, he most definitely deserved better!
Oh my god that Even Stevens cutaway just slapped me in face with nostalgia
Facts
Jack Kirby's collages represent some of my favorite comics works.
your collage at the end I thought was beautiful. I wasn't expecting much for a first go but that collage made my jaw drop, truly inspired
You make art. You are an artist. You even, "gasp", have fans! Love what you do and this was brilliant.
Haha thanks! Still trying to embrace it!
Scott, I want to let you know that the art you make inspires me and always opens my eyes to new things and perspectives. Thanks for being the artist you are
"When Mr. Fantastic saw Jack's art..." Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Scott, the videos you make are always emotionally resonant and make me feel things beyond âthatâs interesting.â Your dedication to the credit of artists and exploration of their visions is an art in itself, and you are an artist.
The amount of work, time and passion that you put into your work makes you an artist my friend, own it
jack Kirby would be both honored and proud of this video. honored because his more obscure work was not forgotten and proud because it inspired someone else.
As an artists and letâs say supporter of unions this is one of my favourite videos by you, your lighting, graphics design and editing is always beautiful too
I haven't done collages since middle School, but this video (and Kirby's great art) inspired me to do some again.
Go for it! I had tons of fun making mine!
Netflix might be able to throw more money at their documentaries, but they are not higher quality and I would a thousand times rather watch you talk about the same subject! So there!
Scott, Iâve been thinking for awhile that a good video idea would be the history of when comics became more for adults and less aimed towards young children
Yes! It has been an interesting paradigm shift for this genre over the last twenty years.
From print to screen an entire generation was raised on these characters, their âcontentâ and âIntellectual Propertyâ.
âNostalgia never goes out of fashionâ
-City Slickers
That final collage was genuinely breathtaking. Fantastic work, let alone for a first try.
Aw this is a tasty one Scott, Jack was such a creative dude that I can't begin to scratch the surface of. Also happy birthday to the King and happy late birthday to you too. Can't wait for the live stream for this one!đâ¤
It's definitely art, I subscribed to this channel when I was on a bit of a comic/superhero kick, and even though I don't consume as much comic related content these days I'm always excited to immediately watch whatever art this channel creates
I really hoped the screaming human face would say "unionize", but you got me smiling anyway
Okay, that collage at the end? Genuinely really cool.
I even said âthatâs really coolâ out loud while watching.
Thank you so much, Stephen!
One of my most vivid memories of my childhood is reading Fantastic Four, and turning the page to see one of these incredible artworks (I use the word very deliberately).
The FF in deep space, part photograph, part traditional Kirby comicbook pencil work. It was as though the characters had crossed into the "real world", it's hard to explain how a 10 year old me felt, but I was so excited by this.
Stan and Jack expanded on this, calling the Marvel comics "Pop Art", which I never really understood.
Steve Ditko went in a slightly different direction, with psychedelic "other realms". The Doctor Strange movie did a fairly good job in recreating Ditko's almost trippy visions. Put me off ever trying drugs! đ
I didn't know Mildred was doing voiceover for this. Hell yeah! Love seeing my two favorite CZcamsrs collab. Fantastic work as always :)
If I squint my ears, I can make out vestiges of Bobby Duke
Even since I first saw them I've found something slightly breathtaking about some of Jack's collage art and that's not a word I use lightly.
the are truly stunning
Can we all just agree how much this channel has upped the quality of its content and the overall presentation? Great sound, nice editing, well researched, it is excellent what you managed to achieve.
Beautiful video, Scott. I know you joke about "no content only context" but I absolutely love how much background you give in every video you do. If I just wanted a list of events I could go on Wikipedia, but it's here that I get the actual depth and understanding.
Thanks, Grant! Iâm glad you enjoy context as much as I do haha
I dream of the day Scott or someone similar does a deep dive into Roz Kirby. Both as a person and how much she did to make the legend of Jack possible
Hopefully one day!
I love your channel so much. Iâve been depressed for a while and lost a lot of motivation and energy to indulge in my hobbies again. Your videos helped me out of it. Thank you.
BLESS YOU for your Position. I'm glad you can finally say you're an Artist.
Ah, you got us Scott. Tricking us into another Jimmy Olsen episode. Love it though, keep up the good videos.
Thank you so much for this! I've always dug Kirby's collage work and really appreciate this deep dive.
I had fun with it, Heath!
Scott acknowledging what he does is art is the most wholesome thing
Thanks Scott for this video.
You definitely are an artist, it really clicked with your conclusion why are your videos so good.
Art as I see it is about expressing yourself and evoking a reaction in your audience, and as much as you say you don't like your old content I feel you were always achieving that with me at least.
The collage at the end was a sight to behold.
Thank you so much! Youâre too kind!
Your CZcams videos *are* art. I respect it man. Donât ever feel you have to apologize for calling yourself an artist.
I appreciate how you show the brilliance of Jack Kirby. While he was the best at one thing at the time, drawing, the gentle respect you pay by helping all to understand his other intellectual artistic avenues sheds light on ideas and value for all artists whether drawing, painting, collages, or numerous other techniques. Sometimes in combining techniques even if challenging, leads to the marvelous world we have by creating something cherished and full of awe. Thanks for a very kind contribution. You are a true artist :)
What you create is very much art Scott, and I love experiencing it all the time. Also your collage at the end was legit beautiful and one hundred percent convened the message you were going for, I would honestly hang something like that on my wall.
Your collage at the end made me smile.
Great art Scott
Thank you, Kelly! Means a lot!
As an artist who draws and is more usually considered an artist, I say yes Scott, you ARE an artist and your videos are art. I love how much you put of yourself in your text and how open you are to expose your feelings in it. Really inspiring :)
This was an amazing birthday gift (not that you made it for me, but it came out on my birthday so Imma take it) ! Thank you Scott! Keep making great art!
Happy birthday!
Those collage are beautiful especially the ego n negative zone
i might have commented this before but i'll say it again: years ago when i discovered your work it was already good, but now it is fantastic
I have enjoyed your videos, at first for the fun informative content, then for your enthusiastic presentation, but over time I began to notice your cinematography and editing choices. You have woven great art together and I will continue to enjoy each new piece.
Thank you for the kind words! And thanks for sticking around as I change and evolve!
I love all of youâre newer, longer videos. They are well worth the wait.
First reaction on seeing the title: âYeah, well, we ALL draw some crazy stuff in college.â
Second reaction after starting video: âOh.â
I am so hyped for this episode â¤ď¸ Kirby is one of my favorite artists (not "comic book artist", artist in general). He had an amazing futurist sensibility.
This is why I love Nerdsync â¤ď¸đ Scott's videos make me love comics even more đâ¤ď¸
This has got to be one of my favourite videos you've ever done. I had no idea these collages even existed before and now I've learned so much about the history of something I'm deeply passionate about. Thanks, Scott!
Thanks Gregory! Love making these videos and Iâm glad people like watching them!
This lighting is AWESOME
I really feel that Mr. Jack Kirby's ideas and arts here were way far ahead of its time. His arts and ideas is amazing to me. Something unique and weird yet still amazing.
Thank you for being so passionate about his work. The King's artwork changed my life since i first saw his art when i was 4. Im sure Jack would be very proud of what you said & made.
I always love your content, but this final collage you made/revealed is absolutely amazing! Thanks for shining a light on this part of Kirby's life
Thank you so much!
This video is amazing and it made me want to give collage art a try for myself. Thanks for making it.
I loved the collages in Fantastic 4 as a kid. Then again I was the kind of kid who fell in love with hip hop for the creative sampling. The concept of making art by recontextualization was always very beautiful to me.
This was fascinating. I first became acquainted with Kirby when he started at DC in 1970; these comics had quite an influence on my imagination. And I loved the collage you did; don't stop.
Collage to me means Monty Python Segues.
That being said I saw one of these in a comic book reader app and it gave me pause. I had to take a screen capture as I'd never seen anything like this on the page before.
I'm such a huge Kirby fan that I've been working with a really great tattoo artist to do a Kirby-inspired sci-fi sleeve for my entire right arm.
We've actually gone through a lot of the traditional inspiration and have been looking for some different options for the fills and a few open spots. I think we're going to have to talk about Collage Art and Fumetti elements in some smaller areas.
Thanks so much for this deep and unique insight into Kirby and his lesser paid attention to work!
Scott: When you have a hobby, you gotta monetize it.
Nolan Joker: If youâre good at something never do it for free.
I loved these pictures. The issue of the Fantastic Four allying with Namor to battle Attuma was a classic, in my opinion.
Thank you for being more in-depth with comics than what I see, you make these interesting and better than science channels
Dang, I never knew about Kirby's collages till now. That's one of the coolest ways to implement sceneries and backgrounds. đđ˝đđ˝
Hey Scott, fellow artist here! I'm on a binge re watching all your amazing videos. I'm supposed to be working right now, got a lot of drawing to do, but even though I planned to just listen to you talk while I worked, I can't help but stare at the beautiful editing and camera work you seem to pour into your most recent work. Amazing stuff. Thank you for making my life a little more beautiful â¤ď¸
Happy birthday to you, Scott!
You damn well are an artist! Go you!
Iâm a comic book artist and creator. I knew Jack and have worked with some of the greatest talents in this industry. Iâm extremely passionate about what I do. Nothing makes me happier than seeing your passion come out as you speak about Jack and his artwork. You looked like you were so compelled that you were about to cry. I felt the same way. Thank you for making the most emotional presentation of Jackâs work by anyone on CZcams. -Ian Dorian
Amazing video, Scott, and happy birthday!
As someone who loves, in the purest sense of the word, writing, philosophy, theatre, and many other things that people would tell me to just not bother with, this feeling that you captured perfectly with your art was amazing, thank you.
I'll be honest, this was a fascinating look into collages and through the lens of Jack Kirby understanding what can work and not so work in comics but in art in general. I wish I had this video a few years ago in college when I was taking a digital arts class which used alot of collaging though Photoshop, and I used to be constantly stunted on what to use and why to use it.
I love the art of collages and iâve never know someone (especially kirby) used them in comics! In contrast to people who dislike the style, iâm imensly interested now. Thanks for making such a great video about it!!
Since I was a kid, I've always loved his collages. It seemed a bold move from him in his medium - comics. Adorable, simply adorable. That's what authentic artists do: they try new ideas and approaches in their work.
I had never seen Kirby's collage art but it is now some of my favorite art I've ever seen by him (which is really saying something because this is frickin' Jack Kirby we're talking about). Your collage at the end of the video was also awesome and really ended the video on a powerful note in my opinion!
I believe the reason the videos on Scooby-doo do so well is the amount of passion they bring you. You have a lot of fun and that is infectious. Leave your bothers behind the camera and your passion will propel you.
absolutely love the videos and how good the quality has been recently. been watching for years and seeing your art evolve from fun couple minute stories about a weird comic to absolutely amazing video essays that delve deeper then ever before into your favorite pieces of media is absolutely beautiful. i cannot wait to see how it evolves further (although i am very glad that i will have to wait anyways for such amazing videos). and im glad your accepting your videos as being art rather then just content (even if they were never content in the first place, no content, only context).
also the collage art was beautiful and i really hope you have the wallspace to keep it somewhere
I always love your videos. Thank you for always following your passions and art. It is a joy to listen to you talk
I belive this video is one the best I have ever seen on CZcams and now, obviously, my favourite. Well done Scott! It is evident that a lot of work and thought has been put into creating this ART.
I'm so obsessed with all of your content (which is art!! i love how insightful all of your takes are, and the artful way you put together and execute your videos is so inspiring), I'm going to be so sad once I catch up and run out of videos to binge :')
awww thank you so much!
I really appreciate what you have created in your collage.
For the better part of 50 years, maybe even a little more, so much media was consumed through television, but the number of creators and the stories able to be told has exploded away from what standard television could once give with the advent of the Internet and places like CZcams. Imagine the things people of the mid 20th Century would be interested in today that was not on television at that time. However, we also have spent 50+ years just staring at boxes, and while so much of what we view is now outside the box, they also find new boxes to inhabit and we still sit and look at them. There's chaos in the boxes that try to grab our attention, and we forget to go forth and create works with our imagination that have no need for the boxes and are more active, interactive, and tactile, or even just personal and something not needing to be broadcast to the masses. We could do more to go out and create and experiment rather than consume.
You've made a very compelling piece, Scott. It's a true work of art, and you are indeed an artist.
I think what I love most about these pieces is that in comparison to his regular pencil art, there's often this stark, cold eeriness in Kirby's collages. They're often unsettling and invoke feelings of discomfort and uneasiness - I can imagine if I were to see them as a young child that some sort of primal fear would instinctually kick in due to the juxtaposition with the safe, familiar space of Kirby's art and I would want to glue the pages together so as not see them again. But they're so fascinating to examine as an adult and to look at what Kirby was trying to accomplish and push as an artist in the comics medium. Thank you very much for devoting a video to this topic!
OMG an Upload! These videos are amazing!
I never get tired of this video
Been waiting for this one đđź
Thank you so much for bringing so much love into this video. Yes, itâs such beautiful art that I canât stop admiring. As for Jack Kirby, the more I learn about him, the more I feel his incredible drive and frustration. Such a creative man that ended torn up by corporation. Itâs sad.
This was a great episode. Long live the King.
I've been following You for years and Love All of your work, Scott.
Thank You.
JIMMIES!!! The gift that keeps giving.
You really are an artist, I have never seen one comic channel as unique as NerdSync, and that's the artist's mark of NerdSync.
Damn, my heart felt that... Another good analysis for you, Scott. Jack Kirby is always ahead of his time. Long live "The King"!!!
And also, I would totally pick your video always over documentaries on Netflix. They don't have Scooby-Doo sneak in their scenes...
I love collage art and I'm in awe of what Jack Kirby was able to do with the medium. Also I love the structure of this video and I love seeing your collage art at the end.
Thank you for making videos like this, I love watching them so much!!
Thank you for watching them!
I absolutely love this video, you are doing such a great job! Don't ever stop making these kinds of videos.
