It’s because of the Wii U, even if it wasn’t the Year of Luigi, they would have had the same problems. Every Luigi’s Mansion game has sold at least twice as much as the previous entry. Luigi has a serious following and those followers are very protective of him as am I.

To be honest it probably probably was not even a great year to be a Luigi (besides the Mansion game).

According to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo did the Year of Luigi because the Wii U was reeeally struggling, so they just wanted something to bring more attention to the games being released for it. Ironically, also according to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo hates celebrating anniversaries (notice they've never done a year of any other character), so they had to really be desperate to push this campaign.
If you don't mind me asking, do you know which vid they talked about this?
@@squiddywiddy8891 Considering how many Wii U story times they did at the beginning I would think it would have to be in the first handful of episodes, but I'm afraid I don't know exactly which one. As for the detail of them not liking to do anniversaries in the first place, that is in one of the patreon exclusive Q&A sessions.
I figured as much. Besides the 3DS, Nintendo was really not doing well back then and I remember when this campaign came out I thought “Is this the best they can do?” Most of us just wanted games. Thankfully end of 2013-2014 was when all the good Wii U games released
I think that makes the fact that this was the year where their stocks hit an all-time low even funnier.

The reason it ended in March is because that's the end of the fiscal year. It was literally the fiscal year of luigi.
They ended it so that the 2014 fiscal year wouldn't also be terrible. Had Luigi's reign been left unchecked, Nintendo likely would have dissolved before they could release the switch. Thank god Miyamoto was able to wrestle back control from his greasy gloved hands.

honestly I gotta give some credit to the year of Luigi. Scott says "if there was no Luigi branding nobody would notice" but like. Luigi got 2 games with his name in the title I think that's kind of notable. combined with his role in dream team and the cameos in 3D world (which they kept up with hiding Luigis in odyssey) it was a pretty cute fun event
Pretty sure Odyssey has sprites of Mario and Peach hidden around too. Also at least one Rosalina on the moon.

Okay, I am actively pissed that they refuse to give us more lore about R.O.B.
He's like, THE Nintendo character. Yeah he didn't do hot, but he pushed toy lovers into the gaming hobby. He reeled in a *very* specific audience, and it actually somewhat(?) succeeded in converting toy lovers.
We saw him only once outside of Smash in MarioKart DS of ALL THINGS.
And then never again. It's like he's a cryptid in his own plain of existance. It's so sad. He deserved more.

With the year of Luigi there’s this really particular memory I have where I was in the hospital visiting my grandpa and we had to go to a waiting room for some reason and they had a computer in there so I just looked up stuff about the year of Luigi and tried talking about it with my dad

IIRC Nintendo of America went crazy with marketing the year of Luigi on CZcams. I distinctly remember a series of parkour videos with a guy dressed as Luigi, it was pretty cool. Big time for Luigi fans.

Ah yes, The Year of Luigi. I still have the green 3DS Luigi storage hat and my free copy of Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon for 3DS complete with Miyamoto’s autograph. I won a short essay contest on Twitter about my favorite Luigi moment.
The year of Luigi gave us Mario and Luigi: Dream Team and Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon. 10/10 year right there.

My oldest boy was pretty into Luigi that year. He was six.
I really enjoyed the Year of Luigi. Yeah, it was stupid and a little pointless, and it was Nintendo's worst financial year on record, but I just thought it was charming to see the little logo and get a few Luigi-centric games. I don't even like Luigi, I'm a Mario guy, but he's a funny fellow and he's an icon, and it's so nice to see such a focus on him when he used to be such a neglected character. I remember back in the N64 days people really thought Nintendo had something against Luigi in particular with the way he always played second banana to Mario, but now he's got his own identity and holds a place in all of our hearts.

The Year of Luigi is one of my favorite events Nintendo ever hold. Luigi is one of my favorite characters of all time, and my favorite game(Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon) released this year. Hell it’s my personal favorite subset of stuff to collect. I have all the games and that’s about it

It was also the year Starbomb released the music video for Luigi's Ballad. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole marketing blitz brought Luigi back into the forefront for a lot of younger Nintendo fans after he'd been absent in the a lot of the mainline N64 & GCN games.

I never got around to playing any of these (no Wii U) but they did include a Dr. Luigi mode in Dr. Mario Miracle Cure for 3DS so I could still meme it up with Luigi that way
I bought my first ds during this year. It was an exclusive luigi themed 3ds xl, I still use it and I love the design. Good year overall

So, Scott kinda missed one game. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker has the same hidden Luigi’s as other games do yet it was released in November of 2014 so I don’t know if they planned it as a YoL game or what

My dad got me my first 3DS in 2013, and it was the Year of Luigi silver 3DS bundled with Mario & Luigi Dream Team. Luigi's been my favorite character ever since, so i guess the Year of Luigi had some sort of impact lmao

They also did a silver Year of Luigi 3DS XL bundle with Mario & Luigi Dream Team and Year of Luigi branding on the bottom in gold print. I found it pretty neat because they never released a regular silver 3DS XL in North America.

I really enjoyed it. It came with New Super Mario U deluxe. Having new levels, while short, was great. Loved the way he controlled.
I unironically love Dr. Luigi
The one thing that I don't like about the New Super Mario Bros. games, is that you can only really save the game after a castle level. You can save your game anywhere after you beat the game, which to me doesn't make sense.
I'm sitting here, right, the video paused in the middle of the dark moon segment, trying to think of the year of Luigi things. Right now I can think of Luigi U, Dark Moon, and maybe the Luigi bros game in 3d world? I guess it felt like a way bigger deal in the moment but the fact that I can't think of anything just goes to show that it really wasn't.
Luigi also took over the Chicago CTA and schlepped around tweeting about pizza and things for a few days, for some reason.

The Nintendo corporate buildings still have year of luigi signage strewn about in tucked away places. It's a piece of history that the people internally want to keep.

as a taller younger sibling to my much more sociable shorter older sibling i relate to mr luigi mario an extreme amount, so the year of luigi was very exciting to me
3DS Year of Luigi was MY 3DS XL. Loved it. Hated Dream Team tho I never beat it I couldn’t stand it.

I got the gold coin from Club Nintendo and I've still got it somewhere. I remember complaining on Miiverse that the Year of Luigi was going on for too long and someone replied 'well that's the idea, it's suppose to be a YEAR'.
