  • NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we set off from lovely Stockton Heath and get all of about 100 yards before utilising the fantastic service facilities at Thorn Marine. We also fill up with diesel and get one heck of a shock in the process. How we manage to continue to talk for the rest of the video is beyond us ha ha! Anyway, come and join us for a cruise on the lovely Bridgewater Canal. Nice, nice, nice.

    I apologize for not subscribing earlier; there’s no excuse! I didn’t watch your episodes all the time, just when a felt a little “down “, when my 77 year old body screamed at me in the morning, or whenever I realized that I had more work to do than I would ever be able to get done during the time I have left. Basically, you’ve been an escape for an old man. Thank you!

    There is a paste that you can apply to your dipstick that will assist in detecting water in your fuel tank. I am sure that the chandlers or fuel places will carry it. There is a young woman, May, who has a you Tube channel about her narrow boating experiences and her yoga classes who has used the paste.
    Other long term boaters will be able to assist in letting you know who supplies clean fuel and who doesn't. Also just ask your supplier what they do to address the issue in their holding tanks.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      I doubt we’d get any sense out of a seller of diesel because no-one would admit to doing very little but the paste sounds rather interesting for sure!!
      We should say having done some research we have decided to give Marine 16 a try.

    I so love the Bridgewater. Started my life long love of canals at Sale Cruising Club at about six years old with my uncle Joe. A story that needs to be told. An almost blind guy that designed two canal boats. Had them part built by family members in the front room of his house (the first one anyway. Bosley) the second in an old pickle works in Salford. We had so many adventures on RAMONA. If you like people that love canals this story (and it is absolutely true I have pictures) would absolutely intrigue you. Keep safe and well.

    Good afternoon fellow Joshers. I loved your commentry, there were some amusing moments. Diesel is expensive these days for sure. Funny enoguh, I found a diesel leak on my Josh just yesterday. I lost something like 30 litres into the bilge under the engine. Its all pumped out now and Ive isolated both supplies to the engine and diesel heating at their respective valves. Thats yet another job for me to do now lol. I hope you are weathering the storms and are not tempted to cruise in these extreme winds. Take it easy and see you on your nexct one. Peter.

      Fellow Josher - love it Peter!!
      Thanks for the kind comments. Diesel is expensive enough to buy without it leaking into the bilge. It happens though. We had a weep but luckily I saw it one day and tightened up the joint. Hopefully that’s all we will need to do but as you say there will always be something won’t there?!
      As for diesel heating we’ve just removed most of our system. Haven’t decided what to replace it with yet because it needs plenty of research so will probably wait for better weather 🤣🤣

    Petrol is dearer than diesel here in NZ.
    Though Petrol has come down recently from just below $3 (£1.49) to $2.53(£1.25) to $2.75 a litre. Its expensive when it takes a fifth of your weekly pension to fill the tank!

    • @NarrowEscape1

    Hey guys good seeing you again.
    Try to get your head around the price of fuel by amortizing the cost over the time it will take to use up the fuel. What do you do about preventing diesel bug??

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      You are quite right Mark on that point and we do try and think like that.
      5 mpg is a nasty figure but then a you rightly allude to 5 miles on the canals isn’t like 5 miles on the road in terms of time 👍👍
      Diesel bug is an interesting one. We’ve heard so much conflicting info on this.
      We’ve used a diesel system cleaner on a regular basis but have wondered whether regular top ups will assist. Much debate on this of course. What’s your view?

    • @markrant1460
      @markrant1460 Před 7 měsíci +1

      It appears that diesel bug is a microbe that lives in moisture and feeds on the vegetable biproducts that go into the modern diesels fuels. If one can keep their tank full then that helps to reduce the potential for condensation especially in the colder months.
      By adding a product like Seafoam, the additive will also help keep the moisture down. I have used Seafoam myself, more as an engine cleaner and parts cleaner and find that it really is a good quality product. Check with one of the local chandlers.

    • @NarrowEscape1
      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for that Mark that’s super helpful 👍
      We’ll check out Seafoam today actually.
      We’ve heard conflicting stories on the tanks and one of the things that has made us try running the last tank lower before filling up was that by topping up at each fuel point along the way you increase the chances of one of them having a diesel bug infestation and introducing into your tank.
      Having said that I think topping up is a decent way to go and we’ll look into the Seafoam too.
      Alberta, Canada - nice, nice, nice 👍

      @NarrowEscape1  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hi Ian. One of these things I can answer with
      clarity, the other slightly less so.
      Clear answer - JOSH does 5 mpg.
      Foggier answer - we think red diesel is cheaper to assist farm vehicles and the like from having to buy more expensive pump diesel. The might even be used for oil fires heating? Either way It’s tinted with a red dye so that the police could dip and test the fuel quickly if road vehicles chose to use it instead of pump diesel. The prices aren’t so different though these days also questionable whether it’s either a ‘thing’ or not?

And when you speak, name, names! I know it must be a British thing, so why keep perpetuating it by letting yourself be stepped upon, time and again?

    PS. Why doesn't the CRT make the person that owns the sunken boat take care of it or have it remove at the owners expense? After all it's a danger to the canal and all those who cruise there. (as are the over grown areas)

      The point about the boat removal is an interesting one. The Bridgewater Canal is not owned or operated by the CRT, it’s run by a ‘private’ company. Presumably they have tried to have the boat’s owner sort it and failed and aren’t prepared to do it at their cost and then try and recover the costs of doing so afterwards? Now if it were to be in the middle of the canal blocking it then…?
