Pale Saints drew from a deceptively deep pool of influences and teased out distinctive traits that charmed the visionary 4AD label. The English band developed their unique strain of dream-pop by synthesizing elements of connected bygone movements such as West Coast psychedelia, the paisley underground, and C-86, applying avant-folk, pure pop, and the spectral post-punk advancements of their elder labelmates along the way. Their three albums of increasing scope and sprawl, namely The Comforts of Madness (1990), In Ribbons (1992), and Slow Buildings (1994), left lasting imprints. - All Music

They have a wonderful cover of Kinky Love on their Flesh Baloon EP. One of my favourite bands.

I really love this band. Both line-ups. Really got into them around twenty years ago. Thank you so much for talking about bands like this, they deserve some recognition. Been amazing to see the shoegaze music get way more popular today then it was in the 90's. Saw Slowdive in 2014 play before a rapturous audience and it made me so happy.

Ian Masters the pale saints singer formed his next band Spoon-fed Hybrid after they split up. I'm sure you've heard them but they are really good, a continuation of the pale saints sound.

I bought In Ribbons at a bargain bin in my first winter and then got into the band. For me Shoegaze and dream pop and winter go well together. I still kept in ribbons for sentimenantal reasons. If there is a band that I listened to religiously during my winters, it's the Ocean Blue. We had previously been talking about American bands so I mentioned them. They are the most criminally underated band. Cerulean is an album I still listen to when it rains. Also Luna or Galaxy 500 are underrated American bands.

In ribbons are an amazing album, I was just listening to it a while ago! Very suitable for winter too. Also love Luna and G500 - two of my all-time favs!

I was lucky enough to see Pale Saints twice and they were my gateway to shoegaze. First time I saw them they opened for Ride in 92 and a couple years later headlined in Atlanta. Great band, Comforts still one of my favorite all time albums and have my copy on vinyl still.

Lucky you!! They never got reunited, unlike other shoegaze bands. Ride are fantastic too, but I find Pale Saints have more subtle beauty in them.

@@StellasEncounter Yeah I wish they would reunite but highly unlikely. When Adorable reunited I flew from US to UK to see one of the shows and would do the same for Pale Saints.

That's awesome you saw them in Atlanta. I was in Athens at the time and for some reason they never played any gigs in Athens. I think I heard they played the Cotton Club. As I said in a comment Lush's promoters were far more aggressive in promoting that band and they played everywhere. I get Ian has no interest in doing any reunion.

Pale saints are definitely an underrated band. I picked up the comforts of madness awhile back only really knowing sight of you.. I think mrs. Dolphin is definitely worth mentioning too. It's an album of their early stuff that was only available on cd in Japan until last record store day when it was released on vinyl for the first time

Comfort of Madness one my all time favourites. Played it to death as a teenager. Still played regularly. More jangly and melodic than the wall of noise stuff from likes of Slowdive. And I can’t imagine anyone not liking MBV! But I suppose they must exist. 😩
Did you see Slowdive and Ride when they came to China? I saw them in Beijing. Ride was the first band I ever saw play live. Still have the t-shirt.

Pale Saint's melodies are so hauntingly beautiful! I didn't see them in China! Shows were good I bet?! I did see Ride once in Europe, sang along Vapour Trail at the very front :DD regarding first show - that must be long ago!1991?

@@StellasEncounter Brilliant! Ride gig was the better of the two. The band even did a meet and greet signing session at the end. I didn’t have anything to sign so I got them to sign a 100RMB note instead. 🤣. And, yup, June 1991 was the first time I saw them.

If you want to discover a underappreciated, underrated shoegaze band you should listen to half string. Based in Tempe, Arizona, they were around in the early 90s.
Blind Mr Jones is another underrated, underappreciated shoegaze band from the initial era. I would love to know your thoughts about both of these musical outfits

Yah, Pale Saints are under-spoken. I think bands like Lush had a more mainstream appeal and you had a very iconic singer like Miki. They also had a good promoter. MBV was talked about quite a lot in zines and other publications like Guitar World. In Ribbons is one of my favorite albums. Ironically, Meriel Barham was in Lush before Pale Saints. You also had bands like Lush that went in a more pop direction with Lovelife. I don't think shoegaze appeals to the masses. I guess recommended song from me at the moment is the EP version of Baby Maker - czcams.com/video/bhPGseWzk4M/video.html
