OMA The Back Story - Part 4: The Underground

- Oswalds Mill Audio. A strange name for an unlikely story.
OMA gets its name from a more than 200 year old mill in Eastern Pennsylvania, restored by OMA founder Jonathan Weiss. In that mill Jonathan assembled an impressive collection of vintage cinema and studio audio equipment, especially horn loaded loudspeakers, dating back to the 1930's. Within the walls of this massive mill, Jonathan’s audio obsessions attracted like minded people who congregated there every year for an event which became world famous. This underground community of speaker and horn designers and builders, tube audio and vinyl and tonearm experts became the foundation for launching a whole new approach to high end audio: OMA, Oswalds Mill Audio.

I live way out in rural Queensland and the chances of ever encountering your pieces is pretty much zero, but it's still lovely to watch.

Great to hear and see this Jonathan. I have to say though that you've glossed over most of the details. I can guess that you spent a huge amount of money, time and stress setting up OMA. I bet that even the creation of your Brooklyn showroom was a Saga in itself. Hope to hear more over time. Thanks for sharing so much of your story with us.

This has been fascinating. I like what you’ve become : the manner in which you’ve zigged instead of zagged - + / - a decision, or two, and you may not have been acquainted w / your soulmate. Furthermore, Oswald Mills may have been [ probably ] relegated to, nostalgic, ruin.

your story is inspiring
Although I am currently designing 3d printed turntables, the vintage tube gear really resonates. Built some Dynaco MKIII amps many years back and they were fabulous. I can only imagine how amazing some of the cinema amps you own must sound. So important that someone is curating this very important part of audio history. Great job.
My current setup is a Leak Stereo 20 (1958) Goodmans 301 full range drivers in solid wood bass reflex cabinets (1955) and I could not be happier. Although I do miss my Altec's haha. Not that I'd swap Id just have more cables ;-)

AMazing stuff , its to bad that is only for lucky few with deep pockets .
Look I love what you do the blending of two arts (maybe three) but why does it need to be so elitist? Music was meant to be enjoyed by everyone. The music of nature is not ascribed to he who has the biggest bank so why should this be so weighted? I do love music I do love the human characteristic that wants to constantly evolve within musical constraints (if these really exist?) however I believe it should be for everyone or as a species we cannot evolve.
OMA ... you surely make fantastic stuff... but can you make something for the $5k budget??.... capture 80% of the high end goodness
