➡️ We're long overdue for some pop punk appreciation on the channel, so let's kick it off with "LONGVIEW" from Green Day! This was the lead single from their breakout-album "Dookie" released in 1994. I've always admired the minimal, stripped-down instrumentation these bands were known for. They achieved a huge, impactful sound with such few ingredients. In this video, I break down this iconic bass riff from Mike Dirnt, whose parts are essentially the lead melodic figures in the song. I discuss his tone, the debate on what bass he used (it seems that Mike has said conflicting facts over the years about this), a demonstration on achieving his tone, how the bass part subtly evolves throughout the song, tips on "swinging" a walking bass line, and much more. This bass part could easily be converted to a jazz song, and I really dig the stylistic duality showcased here. I think these colorful elements are what really propelled Green Day much further than their peers at the time. They really blossomed when other stylistic influences slowly crept into their sound over the years.

Yeah it's a good one eh :) I really think that J.A.R. is probably Mike's best though. Just has a great, soulful ring to it. Shame the mix sucks on that song, Mike's bass is so low and so thin-sounding that it's drowned out.
Billie Joe told in an interview that he came home one day and Mike was sitting on the floor with his legs far apart, his Gibson G3 in his hands, eyes wide as dinnerplates (he was on acid) and said "LISTEN TO THIS" and played the Longview bassline for the first time for Billie.
matt freeman from rancid's most famous bass solos have to be "maxwell murder" and "axiom" although "young al capone" is also wild

For me growing and learning to play bass in the late 80's and early 90's it was the Holy Trinity of Mikes: Mike Watt, Mike Dirnt, and Mike Gordon.

Fugazi "Waiting Room", one of the greatest bass lines in all of rock, in my opinion.
The Minutemen are also a must for a jazz guy exploring punk. It's hard to pick one song, and most of them are so short that people post the whole album rather than single songs. But, personal favorites of mine are "Polarity" and "Little Man With A Gun In His Hand", both of which happen to be the last songs on their respective albums.

A lot of Mike's fills and runs from the first 5 albums are based on this same scale shape, even that little 2-note "Da-daa" in the chorus break of When I Come Around, it's all the same trick. But his real talent was knowing where to use it for maximum effect.
His absolute peak of doing this can be heard in 'Stuck With Me' from Insomniac. Frantic, fast & noodly but absolute perfection.
I love Longview, but Stuck With Me is Mike's Magnus Opus
Longview and minority were two of the first songs I heard on the radio as a kid that made me want to put down my guitar and pick up the bass
Honestly Fat Mike of NOFX is the most underated bassist on punk/pop punk. Think he needs more love.

“Maxwell murders” by rancid, “lost” by satanic surfers, “bombshell “ by operation ivy, “rust” “dis chords” or island of shame “ by lagwagon… that’s a good start if you wanted to do 90’s punk (80’s op ivy). Check them out. You’ll enjoy them.
Glad you talk about production here. It's an underrated aspect of this album - Rob Cavallo and Jerry Finn were huge in bringing their sound out from the 1039 and Kerplunk days. The band learned an incedible amount in the studio that would define them as much as they defined a new ish genre of music.

since Punk guitar is mostly chunky power chords, in the bands with good bass they make a lot of the melody with passing notes between the roots.

i would recommend "the decline" if you wanna go deeper into great bass stuff in punk. it's a 18min. track by nofx which have so fricking good bass lines in it (the one after the guitar solo at 9-10min ca. for example).

Mike Dirnt is a great bass player. There's nothing horribly difficult to learn (though you sometimes have to stretch your fingers a bit!), but he is very creative.
Essentially, Green Day have a lead bassist. The guitar is basic and effective, but the bass really drives their music.
And Tre is obviously a great drummer. Again he might not be the best technical drummer but he serves the songs perfectly.

This is a great bassline to start with for pop punk. Early Green Day has a lot of fun basslines :)
i once put under skillet in my résumé "able to play all the bass parts of green day's 'dookie' album".
Dead Kennedys comes to mind for Bass. And even The Offspring but I seem to remember heavy bass on the Holiday in Cambodia album.
The Offspring sort of puts off a surf punk vibe. Especially early stuff.
Not sure if you have heard of Royal Blood before? British two piece band, just one guy on drums and one guy singing and on bass. No lead guitar, but the way he plays the bass it acts as a lead, I think they are awesome! Should check out their song “Figure it Out”
A lot of the older punk stuff and old-school hard core punk have bass very present in the mix. I guess it comes from the early days of punk and hardcore punk where gain / distortion on amps was limited (compared to today) so a gritty base tone gave some extra drive and aggression.
I always loved that bass line in Longview going back to when I was a kid in the 90's, before I knew what a bass guitar was. 😂

Hey man great vids!! You were half right btw- all of the bass parts on Dookie were recorded with that modded P/J bass you mentioned, EXCEPT for Longview. Rob Cavalho agonized over getting the bass tone for that track right, iirc they ended up landing on some sort of Kramer aluminum neck bass (similar to the one Mike played for Basket Case on Letterman/the latter half of their set at Woodstock ‘94 but w/ a different pickup config) Dirnt used his G-3 on Kerplunk and Insomniac, but switched to Precisions around 1996 bc of Tré Cool allegedly snapping the neck on his Gibson
Maybe check out some Matt Freeman of Rancid and Operation Ivy. He may be the most technically proficient bassist in punk. Check out Rancid's "Maxwell Murder" for one of the only punk rock bass solos.
That song is only one and a half minutes long. On the other side, you could check out NOFX's "The Decline." It's probably way too long (over 17 minutes) but it has some of Fat Mike's most impressive bass playing. I totally understand if that's too long. He's got great playing throughout NOFX's catalogue. For me, 1991-2000 are the golden years of NOFX.

the NoMeansNo album Wrong has one of the best bass tones I've ever heard tbh, its post-hardcore though
My favorite part about this bass line is the story they tell about Mike playing it for 6 hours straight on LSD and Billy walking through the front door.
The album was recorded in Eb. He used the G3 live. For Dookie he used a P-Bass. Funny though, he used the G3 on Kerplunk and Insomniac. This was their actual apartment and furniture where they lived at the time.
I would like you to analyze No One Knows from their album Kerplunk. The bass is the main instrument on the song and it's a very mild and flowing bass line, but it's the main instrument. It's a beautiful song, actually.
one of the best things in a lot of punk music is the bass makes a lot of the song, with many of the guitar riffs being basic power chords the bass often make up most of the melody.
Matt Freeman from Rancid, Alec from Leftover Crack, Klaus from the Dead Kennedys all worth checking out. in terms of songs "I went on tour for 10 years..." from the Suicide Machines has a great riff, "Totalimmortal" from AFI is a catchy bass driven song , and "Manthem" from the Bouncing Souls has really solid bass line with very nice tone

What i love about green day is their balance as a band. It all is of equal importance and meshes so well. Its not just Billy Joe, its all of them together as equals.
When I was dabbling with bass, I was so happy when I finally got this song down, although I could not play it with a pick, I had to use my fingers.
I'm late to the party on this video but I did mention Snot on one of your other videos, they have some interesting bass lines and some really cool jazzy instrumental tracks on their one and only album. A really underrated band that could have really been big, IMHO. Check out Snooze Button and The Box. Or the whole album.
Definitely check out Dillinger Four. Their album Situationist Comedy is probably the best starting point.

Bass in Bouncing Souls and 88 Fingers Louie. Classic
The 90s and the punk scene of the time that crossed over probably created more bass enthusiasts than any other period in pop music history. All of the sudden bassists were like “wait, we can be the sexy lead? Fuck yeah!”
Fun fact: Mike Dirnt is pretty much exclusively a downstroke player (and iydk he does use a pick, if that wasn't obvious in the video). Adds to the tone and the complexity of his lines.

One interesting thing is how much more impactful the intro bass of the song is in the context of the album because the 2nd half of the previous song on the album "Chump" is a long instrumental section that transitions into Longview. If you've not heard that, listen to the whole album, or at least listen to Chump/Longview together
Green Day in the 90's were really good at having the bass impact pretty much every song they did. From American Idiot onward, they do tend to have the bass be more in the background and doing simpler things but the bass still has its moments to shine on all these albums too

Kenny from The Starting Line is my all time favorite bass player, I think haha. I know live he plays a lot of chords and really neat groovy stuff but I'm not sure if all that is on the records though

Sassafras Roots has the best bass line on Dookie and probably one of the best bass lines of all time.
MxPx - Chick Magnet is really similar. Pop punk with a Jazz feeling. Less popular than Green Day or Blink but MxPx is a really good band and so melodic. Life in general is my personnal favorite pop punk 90s album.
This may seem way left field but check out a track called "Stalker" from a Japanese Rock band called The Pillows they have an instrumental version and a lyrics version both are great but I think you would enjoy learning something new from a band you've never heard of. They are a 3 piece band as well.

I'd recommend other pop punk bands too regarding bass lines. Blink-182 for example, Mark's use of power chords are so good. Carousel or Mutt for example

You say that P-Bass sound is a time stamp on this era, but for my money they're all chasing The Stranglers' JJ Burnel's tone from the the original punk era, which is for my money the GOAT. No More Heros, Nice n Sleazy, Get a Grip on Yourself...

Most punk since The Clash has had louder bass lines than other music. Green Day commercially blended with all alt rock, so you heard bands that don’t have that aesthetic mixed in on the radio. It isn’t just in pop punk. Pop punk was definitely more popular than other scenes, but hardcore and emo broke through later and could be argued from a influence in today’s music had a larger impact. That said if you listen to pretty much any genre of punk you don’t have to struggle to hear the bass. Even on the early 80s recorded in a boot with a spare tire for a microphone than converted to cassette for sale at the show for $3.
As people have mentioned, check out Rancid, NOFX, and Fugazi are great. If I were to add some rarely mentioned but great stuff:
