  • Glimmering microtonal gestures interwoven amidst flourishes of Americana inspired soul. I feel I have finally arrived to the next level of my Lumatone journey. I hope you enjoy this musical offering.
    I'm having so much fun smashing together very familiar kind of vibes with totally celestial and xenharmonic qualities.
    I've had the Lumatone for six months now. Progress was slow the first three months. Across the fourth month, I rarely played Lumatone because I was producing Hex. In the fifth month, I played a lot of 12edo piano because I was working on a project that required it. Finally, I changed my layout and for the last few weeks everything is starting to click. I'm really falling in the love with the instrument and I just want to sit around and play it all day.
    warmly,
    z

    As someone with a trained background in piano & music theory, just watching someone play a lumatone is such a fascinating experience, like I have no idea how this instrument is ACTUALLY laid out/constructed but watching your fingers move it feels like I'm listening/watching a language I half speak where I understand every 2nd word in an almost surreal, beautiful disjointed way.
    this was great

      @@a.nobodys.nobodyYes and no. You can map it any way you want, but the layout of the hexagons favors specific mappings (like the Bosanquet-Wilson layout mentioned above). And those are pre-programmed into the keyboard for ease of use.

  • @Skatche

    I've never liked the term "xenharmonic" -- as if microtonal music were primarily some kind of trippy alien construct. This piece is a great example of how an expanded octave can simply add more richness and colour to very warm and down-to-earth music. Something I've always appreciated about your music in general, but with the piano voicing and the simple jazzy chord progressions this one really drives it home.

      @rogerantonybennett5272 Před 2 lety +25

      There is no such thing as microtonal music.
      All music is microtonal.
      Only just intonation is consonant.
      If you want dissonance then play any pitch.
      Fruit up your Harry Partch.
      Perfect logic is maintained at all times.

    • @stephenweigel
      @stephenweigel Před 2 lety +25

      You raise a really interesting point, Paul! Microtonal music doesn't have to sound mysterious, alien, etc. (many of the qualities we would associate with the word xenharmonic.) I'll tentatively posit that the term "xenharmonic" still has merit, though, after acknowledging this. The biggest thing that word does is distinguish perception from reality. Things that sound noticeably different from standard tuning (whether that's 12edo or not), are often more intense than unexpected feelings one gets from mere chromaticism. And yes, 12edo is one of many microtonal tunings :)

    Avid theory lover, with an educational background in music theory. I've seen many people explain what 31-edo is, but never anyone fully explain / demonstrate HOW it can be used. This is one of the many things I'm falling in love with this channel for. It teaches the what, the theory, the nitty gritty, but also the how. You show quite well how it can be used to make beautiful music, how accessible and enjoyable listening to it can be, and how rich this new palette of sounds and tonal choices really is.
    All that to say is that I'm loving your music in 31-edo so so much.

    Nobody can tell the difference between 31et & 31edo !
    I tuned 3 x 3 kids glockenspiels to 31et around 1980 in London.
    It played interestingly against some Fleetwood Mac 1975 LP....
    I wasn't upset by any micro-discrepencies. 12et versus 31et.

    In fact the unusual pitches are most welcome, both melodically & especially harmony-ways (=wise).
    We are progressing slowly from the ancient archifone days.
    A nice blend of accessible patches against surprise skew chordal workouts.

    Very cool. Thanks so much for sharing. Curious about the layout. Dark blue line looks to be the almost chromatic 12 tone scale you can pull out of 31edo? Then other colors above and below are carrying the "higher order" accidentals?

      not quite, there are 5 rows of 7. they are all relative. :) thanks so much!

      @@allentollin9982 yes! This is the bosanquet layout but instead of color mapped 7+5+7+5+7, I map it 7+7+7+7+7. It makes it so some of the enharmonicism isn't visually clear on the mapping but I know where everything is way better by thinking relatively and relative thinking is easier in this mapping for me

    beautiful playing! How is the transition from normal keyboards to this as a piano player?

    • @ZheannaErose
      @ZheannaErose  Před 2 lety +4

      thank you! the transition has been quite easy. it really depends on the layouts you decide to use. in terms of mechanical action, it took about 6 weeks to get used to. musically its no different to my brain.

    What is the scale exactly? Sorry I'm newbie in the microtonal world. I know it's 31 tone, but what is the key. Like if we have a C Minor for example, it contains 7 notes from the 12 tone. So what is this exactly?

    • @ZheannaErose
      @ZheannaErose  Před 5 měsíci

      multiple? just like in 12 where a single scale isn’t used for a whole piece or improvisation, so too is the scale dynamic here

    I've love to get into microtonal music but how do I learn these alien tuning systems? 😯

    • @Persun_McPersonson
      @Persun_McPersonson Před 2 lety +1

      They're just more divisions of the octave. You just kinda learn it.

    So say a regular human being without years of microtonal or musical theory research wants to make music in tunings like this. Am I basically fucked? I can’t just do every other key on a keyboard and sound like Hanz zimmer with reverb snd delay. How does one know how to compose chords in different tunings? The answer is probably no and that could explain why we never see music like this

    • @ZheannaErose
      @ZheannaErose  Před 2 lety +8

      No you aren't screwed. You don't need years of experience to make microtonal music. Just layout new intervals/pitches/tunings for yourself and experiment. On the chord making/music composition side, nothing really changes when you go to compose microtonal music. You just have more options. If you just going by ear and making music with 12 notes right now, you can still just go by ear and continue to make music with any number of notes or tuning styles.

    Inspiration is a word that falls short. This is one of my favorites.
    I don't have any way to make anything in 31 EDO, all I have is traditional 12 TET instruments and find myself on the outside looking in on the whole microtonal world.
