Samyang 35mm 1.8 review: BEST VALUE for Sony Full Frame

- After having this little lens for a couple of weeks, here are my thoughts. Spoiler alert: if you're in the market for a 35mm lens, just buy it, it's awesome! Easily one of the best, if not THE best value on the market for Sony full frame cameras.
Thanks to its size + weight, it pairs exceptionally well with the a7c and a6000 series of cameras.
Feel free to use the timestamps below to jump around; I'll be covering the sharpness, chromatic aberration, autofocus and even compare the Samyang 35mm f1.8 (or Rokinon 35mm f1.8 if you're in North America) to the Sigma 30mm f1.4 on Sony APSC.

Great review! Thanks!
Hey thanks for watching! Glad I could help.
I've got the 12mm AF for my APS-C and love it. Samyang lenses are really nice. I covered the 35mm focal length with a 23mm Viltrox -- it does a good job too. Liked your show ...
Hey thanks for watching! I've heard good things about the Viltrox lenses but haven't tried them yet.
Even on full frame I picked up two Samyangs; a 35mm 1.8 and 75mm 1.8. They're making some real nice, affordable and small glass these days!
@@andreas1701d Agree 100% -- no complaints ...
Hahaha love these, entertaining AND informative! Make it rainnnn! 😂 #fullframegoals
Thanks! If I win the lottery I'll get ya one 😉
Thanks!
Hey thanks for watching!
Look interesting, here in Indonesia the cost about 320 USD now. Nice review, btw 👌

Hi! Just got this lens with a Sony A7IV and noticed the lens makes a constant low noise. Like you can hear some kind of motor running in it that is not the AF mechanism. It's a separate, constant noise that you can hear even in manual focus. Would you be able to let me know of this is something you hear as well. Trying to establish of that's just the way the lens operates or if I might need to exchange my A7IV. The kit lens for the A7IV is completely silent so hoping it's not an issue with the camera. Appreciate it!
Hey thanks for watching!
I can confirm it is not coming from the lens. I put it on my a6000 and it's perfectly silent when idle.
I do notice a light hum on my a7c, but it's present regardless of lens so I assume it's the cooling system of the camera. Perhaps your sound is the same.
@@andreas1701d Thanks for responding. The camera does not make the noise at all when I turn it on with no lense attached or use the kit lense. Only when I attach the 35mm. I even ordered a second lens to make sure it's wasn't the actual lense but the second one sounds exactly the same.
Wonder if it has something to do with the A7IV itself with this lense combo. Also, maybe something to do with IBIS in the A7IV and the combo of the lens not having OSS. Just taking guesses here. Guess I will try another A7IV to rule out the camera. I can live with the lens noise but just want to be sure the actual camera is not detective.
Thanks again for testing it.
The 45mm f1.8 is a nice piece of glass.
Hey thanks for watching!
Indeed, I had a tough time choosing to start my kit with the 35 or 45. I'll end up getting it as some point in sure, because I was a big fan of the 45mm field of view on apsc and this is one of the very few lenses that offers it for full frame.
Great review! I’m a A6400 owner and need a lens for street photography. I’m torn between Samyang 35f1.8 and Sigma 30f1.4 that you reviewed. I like that Samyang but CA worried me a bit as a jpeg photographer. On the other hand Sigma looks good but it’s much more heavier/bigger lens which i care more about to carry light assets. So what would be your advice? Thanks in advance.
Hey thanks for watching! When I had my a6400, the Sigma 30 1.4 was one of my favourite lenses. You can't go wrong with that one, and it's not that much bigger or heavier than the samyang.
However if I were buying a lens for street today on Sony APSC, I'd probably get the Sigma 18-50 2.8 because I'd rarely use the 1.8 or 1.4, and would prefer the additional focal range.
@@andreas1701d Thanks for the advice! I m hearing 18-50 so often these days for street photography. I will check for it for sure. But as it is much more cheaper lens i’d go for 35mm for now.
You said “cant go wrong with sigma” what about samyang? I’m using fisheye of that brand and very happy. Is it a bad choice for 35mm? And also interested to buy FF in future, thats one of the reason i’m more interested to Samyang.
@@ozisovertherainbow if you plan to go FF in the future, of course the Samyang 35 is the better buy because you can keep it. The Sigma is cheaper, faster and just as good but makes less sense on full frame.
@@ozisovertherainbow keep in mind one thing with the aamyang 35: it's known to have copy variance so you may have to go through 2 or 3 copies to get a good one. I got lucky on the first try though
@@andreas1701d woow i didnt know that good copy part. Mind if i ask how can i figure it out which one is good?
I have this lens and the thing that annoys me about it is that the distortion changes from pincushion to barrel depending on how close or far you're focusing
Hey thanks for watching! It's two biggest weaknesses for me are the focus breathing and close focusing (in general), but for general photography, it's pretty terrific for its price & size
@@andreas1701d yeah no doubt. Hard to beat its price value proposition. And the bokeh is nice too!
What do you think about samyang 35 1.4 compared to 1.8?
Hey thanks for watching!
The 1.8 is significantly better/newer from a technological and even optical perspective.
It's sharper, has lower chromatic aberration, faster & quieter AF and better quality control, all in a much smaller package.
On full frame cameras, there's no reason to forego all that for a slight gain in the light department.
@@andreas1701d Hey, thanks for this reply, you helped me a lot! Had a lot of thinking before this reply! I think i get myself a new samyang 35 1.8 :)
Best value for photo.
Hey thanks for watching! Yes indeed, especially if you get a discount 😉
