  • Want to learn to Gumbi? We got you✌️
So today we are talking about the Gumbi or as capoeirista call it Au De Coluna. The Gumbi is the base to all moves in the Raiz family and really is a must learn! Something you should keep in mind whilst learning to Gumbi is that they're typically performed on your opposite side, let me explain, I am a left twister meaning typically I'd Cartwheel to the left to do any twist, however if I wanted to cork out of a Gumbi, my Gumbi must go to the right. So you can essentially look at a Gumbi as an arched Cartwheel on your wrong side.
This move is annoyingly difficult, I won't sugar coat it, although its the base of all moves in the Raiz family it certainly isnt the easiest. I know people that haven't got it with months of practice, I also know people who have learnt it in an afternoon. So don't be surprised if this doesn't go well the first 100 trys, or if it happens on the second try, it will happen differently for everyone just stick with it!

open shoulder position is the same as close, how do you fix that? In every tutorial they never talk about them not so flexible people

I wouldnt say you need to be the most flexible to gumbi but it does help, if your having trouble opening the shoulders think more about opening your chest I find this helps my students.

So there's a dance gumbi emphasizing flowing movement, a tricking gumbi emphasizing force generation, and a capoeira gumbi emphasizing shoulder and back flexibility/defensive posture?

Tbf I'd say this goes for most moves, the raiz family in general is a good example. Each of the movements can be used in completely different ways it really just depends what you value and what you want to get from it. Your break down of three different types of Gumbi sums it up really well
