  • In this video I will begin restoration of a 1960's Christmas blow mold snowman. (Frosty). Frosty was a blow mold found at Renegers swap mart in Florida. It was in very sad shape. It was in pieces that were taped together to keep it from falling apart. There were also large areas of it missing.
This video is the first part of the repair where I will restore structural integrity via some radical procedures.

My grandparents had this Frosty on their front steps for Christmas my whole life. My brother puts it out now every year as a tradition to honor them. I was received one that was acquired on ebay as a gift and his hat has a crack so was looking for repair ideas. I cant believe there is a video on this exact Frosty! Thank you!

I am beyond thrilled to find your videos! It’s Christmas Day and I’ve been longing to repair my Santa Clause, mfg’rd in 1955! My parents bought it in 1956, the year I was born. I inherited Santa and collectively my family has enjoyed him every Christmas for 68 years! Watching your videos I realize he should be an easier repair because he has a cardboard backing where the lights are attached, like a light board. (He hangs on the porch wall). Easily removed so easy access for repairs! The base is Santa’s shoes and there’s a hole on the boot where the heel should be. The only other repair is to a piece of holly on one side of his hat. I’m super excited to order my supplies and get Santa repaired. I didn’t see in your video what kind of paint you used? I will be brushing on the paint. Originally Santa’s boots had snow painted on them that has almost all worn off. Happy I can hide any seams by replacing the snow! Can’t wait for your response! I’ll be watching more videos! Next is your snowman. Hopefully, you will share the painting process. Thank you soooo much! This made my Christmas!!!

      Hello,
Thank you for sharing your story. I love hearing about the restoration of cherished family blowmolds.
I air brush my blowmolds with transparent paint. This process allows light to pass through. I am working on an air brush technique video that I will post in January. Please come back to see it. Here is the paint that I currently use.
      Thanks for watching.

WOW!!!! That guy is torn apart!!!!! I got the same one. I had a small hole in his glove. My girlfriend & I were watching alot of different videos on how to repair blow molds. I cam across one of your other videos & I saw this guy in the background. I am glad you finally uploaded this video of his repair. I've been waiting for this video. I can't wait to see the glove repair now in the 2nd part of this repair. I did do a video of mine. But I go to edit it. Thank god mine was minor compared to yours. I was very upset & flipped out when I saw that my landlord broke my snowman. After watching all these repair videos & after what I saw with your snowman, I felt alot better cause it was worse them mine. I am glad that I now know these can be repaired. A few of my friends said it can be repaired & I fix it. My girlfriend knows how to handle off the different glues & stuff for this repair. I did repaint some of my blowmolds back in Nov 2011 & did a video of that project that I did. I need to re-edit the old videos & reupload them. Thanks again for working on this snowman & getting this video up! -Greg.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will make it a point to start on the glove. I appreciate your enthusiasm.
What are your thoughts about the stitches? It is radical but it worked great. It cracked every time that I moved it so I came up with the stitches.

@@johnyanik1414 your very welcome :-) I thought the stitches were crazy, but I really think it was a good idea to hold it in place & the hot glue going over it was a good idea also. I can't wait to see what that backside will look like when it is done. Poor guy looked like he got back from war lol! I am glad it worked for you. My girlfriend used a old milk bottle to patch up the little hole & she then used glue & other stuff. I need to upload that video of her talking about how she did it. I was amazed with your video for sure. I am glad the stiches worked & held it in place. I am subscribed to you so I am looking forward to part 2 now! :-) I have alot going on with my channel right now & I have alot of different videos that I post on my channel. Alot of interesting videos for EVERYONE on my channel. I am currently redoing my channel. I upload old & new videos. I have alot of content for my channel that I am re-editing 🙂

Wow your snowman was in rough shape Great job repairing it the stitching idea is very effective I'm glad I have some knowledge of how to repair these things but your videos gave me a lot of insight so I could do a repair on my bf's snowman I can't wait to see your next video

Thank you. Yes the stitches were quite a radical solution. Without stitching though no glue will support the HDPE.

To stop cracks from continuing drill tiny holes at the very end of the crack, or in your case melt holes. Plastics will not continue to crack past the hole.

I’m trying to repair the white sash on the 5ft Santa. It’s pretty cracked up. All the pieces are there but I need to prop that area up so all pieces fit and stay while I glue them back. Love what you did with the ties. The area I’m working with is super fragile and not sure it will work. I love how you used the glue gun and the heat. Love your videos! Gave me a clear vision on what I need to do. Thank you!!!!!!

Hello, I'm working on the front of Frosty the snowman now. It has large sections missing and is as brittle as potato chips. I will be demonstrating filling in and reinforcing large areas.

Yes the crack was so bad that the weight of the top half pushed down torquing or twisting the crack. It's really solid now. Thanks for watching. I'll have more videos shortly.

Will the laqurre thinner take paint off??

    • @johnyanik1414
      @johnyanik1414  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hello
Lacquer thinner can indeed remove paint that was poorly applued so try it on a hidden area first. If you are concerned about the paint then substitute denatured alcohol for cleaning purposes.

I@@johnyanik1414 I can’t seem to, no, but another person suggested a hair dryer and it worked! He’s able to stand now. The piece it glittered or flocked so the other suggestion of soaking it in hot water was not an option.
