Countries like Portugal where all drugs have been decriminalized actually have very low rates of crime and drug overdose because there is no longer the subconscious hedonistic pull towards the taboo. Once things are no longer taboo, the novelty wears off.
It's not all about novelty.
Where there's Taboo, there's power.
I wouldn’t chalk it up to just that. Substances have far greater function than just hedonistic pursuit. There is greater education and awareness in those countries as well as better addiction services that prove individuals can partake in certain more stigmatized substances like heroin while still also fulfilling their adult responsibilities. Carl Hart’s book does a great job outlining this. Overdoses are due to lack of education and the taboo further reinforces alienation and judgment towards individuals. The draw of taboo exists but the lack of resources and education plays a far greater role in overdoses and addiction. Less of crime is because these pursuits aren’t illegal and can’t be run by crime groups

I love the fact that his super grounded attention challenges you/us in many unsuspecting ways that take the dialogue into our imbedded personal unconscious assumptions. This kind of thing has the power to alter our personal algorithms in ways we don't expect. And the self reinforced ad based web worlds can truly be revised.

I feel as though certain drugs play a role in our development. First time saying this to anyone other than my circle but I used Cocaine for 4 years and honestly I am happy I went through what I did. I am no longer that woman because I have learned I am full of ENERGY and its okay to go to bed. As well as it should be legal so there is less violence around it and I bet we could make it something that is very helpful. Let people be. Great conversation and SO HAPPY to be a part of this conversation.
Ya I think people should watch the economist Milton Friedman lectures on why drugs should be legal. Like you said it’d reduce overall violence but sadly people don’t consider that a valid point

Cocaine is a marvelous drug but when it is sold illegally and solely for the purpose of making money, people do evil with it.
No instructions on the bag, no dosage guidelines, no contraindications, no warnings…that’s why people will tend to abuse it more.
I pray to God that He will make it legal so that you may use it for your well being soon.

@@prayunceasingly2029 That’s where mental health treatment vs criminality can come into play. This principle isn’t always comfortable (especially for me, I’m personally Christian and quite “conservative”) and it’s needed in the discomfort of certain actions that don’t meet societal “norms”. But it helps me to differentiate between what is governed by morality and by rule of law. Is it infringing on the body or the rights of others? If not, it falls under self-ownership or autonomy.

Excellent podcast! From someone who was brought up on the War on Drugs, and This is your Brain on Drugs... and non-stop scary images and fear-mongering, this was truly refreshing. One serious concern I have that was not specifically addressed in regards to addiction: Aren't there differences between drugs that bind to our REWARD RECEPTOR - Dopamine - which therefore increase the likelihood of addiction, vs drugs that bind to the SEROTONIN receptor, which (although we need to be cautious not to deplete) are NOT addictive? I would be grateful to have Dr. Hart answer those scientific questions.

Talk about a frustrating topic! It's especially infuriating to me that businesses in states where cannabis is recreational/legal are still testing for it (the long term test, not the one that shows use in individuals from the past 12 hours).. but "EVERYONE is hiring", right? It should be at each of our discretion, to prefer cannabis over pharmaceutical/chemicals, in order to quell our negative thoughts.
What we choose to put in our bodies should be none of anyone else’s business!
@@larsonfamilyhouse right! Some unwind with an alcoholic beverage at the end of the night; now that it's legal within my state (and knowing I do not like the way I feel on alcohol), I'd love some consideration of this when applying for work.
There's a podcast Mark Watts released a few months ago of his Dad Alan exploring this topic during a lecture he did in the 60's. I highly recommend it because I feel he had a pretty balanced perspective about recreational drug use.

I am clean for 9 months now, and i will share my opinion on the matter how i experienced drug use, i started smoking weed at age 21 and i stopped at age 34, and i lost the greatest years of my young life wasted in a haze while life past me by, i used to smoke around 15 joints a day and i did it to get answers in life because of childhood trauma and to numb my crohnical pains(crohns since 2001) and to deal with the stress of daily life as a empath, and by using drugs i took the wrong route because our society doesn't provide the right guidance for people and cases like me because every payed professional doesn't treat the problem they just try to numb you with other stuff, quitting weed was the best thing i did for myself in the last 15 years and as a user i used to think that legalization of drugs was needed, now as a clean person i believe this is the worst thing we can do, we need to grow out of the thinking that we need external substances to go internal for answers to the pains we carry, no we need to grow up and us the intuition that the creator gave us and recognize that we are a million miles above whatever plant medicine is out there as long as we believe in our self and start getting back to mother earth and father universe, it's the material world that makes us crave for answers we think we might find in the drugs, your higher self is the greatest drugs there is, ask yourself did shaolin monks use drugs? no they us the time in this reincarnation to learn how to completely use all the tools that came with this body and mind by explaring it and by removing all the desires of material possessions and focus on dedication and service to others the reach their goals while the western world is looking for best next fast fix.Like i said thats my take on things, we need to get out of this western mentality box they shoved us in and start living truelly in service to ourself and others.

Peaceful choices can lead to violent consequences that involve the lives of other people. That's what many drugs do unfortunately. Theft and burglary by junkie as well, is a non stop occurrence, because of addiction. Downgrade of one leads to more downgrade of society.

14 years of heavy addiction taught me a lot, and I agree with a lot of this. I definitely don't agree with some of the conversation around heroin. Particularly that the "fairy tale around heroin is made up". I was a heroin addict for a long time, there is no pain greater than kicking heroin cold turkey. To say that only 30% of heroin users are addicted seems insane to me, granted I don't have the numbers but I do have the experience, if you use heroin every day for two weeks, it would take you a week of sickness to live without it, take heroin daily for 6 months? That recovery will take a month before feeling well enough to function. Fentanyl is definitely the real killer here, I've woken up in a hospital 14 times because of it. Fentanyl is china's modern day missile, there needs to be a war on drugs but It isn't against the user and it isn't waged in the U.S.! Thank you for having open discussion on this topic very well done, there needs to be more of this!!

Yeah, I remember him stating on Rogan that opiate withdrawal is like a bad flu. If the flu felt like that we’d all live in isolated pods. I love his open- minded, grounded, respectful tone, but IDK where the “only 30% of heroin users are addicted” stat comes from, or how one could ever get accurate data on that subset. Thank you 🙏✨❤️ Too often ‘we’ are treated like we are stupid and not thinking for our own well-being. That we can’t live our own lives. This has rubbed me wrong and now I know why. It’s wrong. We the people are not stupid or uninformed. There is definitely more room for us to be supportive of each other, create better smaller communities and allow everyone to be accepted - which I think will create a place where people are not abusing themselves. ♥️

All pain killers are mind altering; people take them to suppress their perception of pain. Psychedelics were created by our Creator for a reason, so do we really have the right to deny this freedom?

Where do you get it? It’s not available in all the states anymore. I tried it and liked it for pain back when you could buy it most anywhere but never looked too hard into a good brand. Have you listened to Hamilton talk about it? I’m always looking for ways to help pain.

I feel like there are certain drugs that make people do evil things. I know first hand, I was a meth addict for many years. I would NEVER want my children to become addicted, and stuck in that life. Unless you've been a part of that, you don't know what it does to you. Those were the darkest moments of my life, and I was absolutely an evil horrible person, and I did hurt a lot of people. I even came close to murdering more than 1 person a few times during my addiction.
That is very unfortunate, but I know quite a few people that have used methamphetamine to get through very difficult times and it has been helpful. Just my opinion but from my experience, drugs only bring out what we have in our shadows. If you were taken into a place of evil, it's important to explore that now from a clear head space.

Honestly, after 65 years of study, it seems likely that the plain of jars in the Golden Triangle is an ancient work of art honoring the Opium poppy. The jars are shaped like poppy pods, and are scattered randomly like poppies in a field.
I hope he addresses the epidemic among the homeless people living on the streets of major city's like San Francisco where we've recently been given a new nickname of San Fentanyl. Currently there is a huge uproar about it with the Citizens vs City Hall at the moment.

People only use fentanyl because they can’t go to a pharmacy and buy the drugs they actually want to use. Fentanyl is a desperation drug and a product of the war on drugs. A direct consequence of drug prohibition.
@@snailcage I was on fentanyl patches a couple of decades ago, they never came with any serious warnings. The way it's prescribed is not the best because it wears off sooner than the time dosage prescribed, very tightly controlled and even more so now. I still am prescribed pain meds that I'm weaning myself off so its just a huge trap I wish I never got stuck in. But never will I turn to using street drugs these days and risk death even more no matter how much pain or withdrawal I'm in because there's Kratom which has helped me wean myself to half the dose I was on and it can be bought over the counter BUT one does not experience the high that most narcotics give and thats what many folks are after, they want to numb out because their lives are difficult and for other reasons. War on drugs is also a war using drugs as a weapon against the people, what a way to weaken a nation!

In thinking about Liberty, William Burroughs said that we need three things for happiness... purpose, function, and conflict.
I feel we should have "safe places" to be able to alter our consciousness under professional supervision. Like having big open areas or almost like gymnasiums with different things to do or to play with. Where we can be in a safe environment while under the effects of different substances and not be a danger to our selves or others.

It doesn't stop with drugs (which the working taxpayers have to pay for). It continues with no arrest or incarceration for junkies that act out and steal, and free housing for the junkies, probably free food. All for people that threw their own lives away for a high. Not saying there probably wasn't a reason whether it was mental illness or bad life conditions or pure irresponsibility. But they will eventually be babied by the state for everything if they can rationalize giving away free drugs. Society will be about who can get the most free stuff and the incentive to excel will be gone. Look at sanfrancisco.

as long as those who use drugs recreationally don't expect me to pay because they are not being self sufficient and are paying their fair share of taxes like the rest of us, and they don't drive or hurt others, then I'm ok with it.
God knows chronic pain patients can't get pain relief because they are treated like drug addicts who are making it up, so it would help them.
There's a big difference in substances that expand consciousness and ones that constrict it. One chemical structure can give a feeling of love and insight, the other helps us make excuses to hurt one another habitually.
I would argue that love, insight and other feelings are not contained solely within chemical structures, and these differences are more socially and culturally constructed than we usually suppose.
And how can you be sure that the chemical that encourages YOU to make excuses, does not expand or enrich MY experience?
I can't be sure, I don't know you. Maybe having everything legal would reduce overdose because of safe supply. Or maybe it would cause tent city to arise everywhere.

Well one great point is by Milton Friedman. If drugs were legal overall there’d be reduced violence.
Alcohol is a legal drug. I promise, reducing violence isn’t what it does. I’ve seen way too many violence in families due to drinking. This idea of legalization only works in a hypothetical world, where people don’t have mental and emotional issues carried from childhood. Where every human gets help in form of therapy, counseling etc. to overcome these inner battles. Such a world does not exist.

Hi, I haven’t started to watch this yet but started reading peoples replies and I am a 57 y/o female and was born curious. I started smoking weed freshman year in HS. I then tried all the speed pills, cocaine, quaaludes, mushrooms, LSD and alcohol. By 20, I was done with all that because I made a decision that I didn’t want to be “altered” all the time and began a journey of off&on behavior depending on what was happening in my life but I consciously knew I didn’t want to be a drug addict. I was happy to see marijuana legalized because I think it has benefits whereas alcohol has none. The problem with legalizing, is not all people are mature enough to handle drugs and/or can’t handle them physically/chemically. People also get addicted which means they can’t control their useage and how they behave. Thats the problem, not the desire to want to alter your mind. Thats why there is DUI’s, irrational behavior where you can’t trust people, so legalizing it all could cause mayhem in society unless we recognize addictions and not cry because we have to support those who have a weaker system. Everyone cries about helping out anyone paycheck wise through the government so not sure how it would work? Look at all the heroin addicts caused by opioids that were legal? Lots of crime from that too and that is to get money to support a habit. Maybe start a “Habit” house for the addicts and keep them seperated from society and keep feeding them drugs til they die because some people don’t wake up from their stupor. People are still buying weed illegally because its less expensive…why not use the military to go after the drug cartels and call it a war on drugs. Those guys are the real reason to bust. They don’t pay taxes, they are murderers and thugs. How are they contributing to the world by making everyone brain dead. The fact that drugs were not legal at least made me think twice about doing them or continuing to do them. Who wants to go to jail??
What were quaaludes like? And what was in the speed pills? Different sources say different ingredients for speed pills and I’m always curious every time they’re brought up:)
@@larsonfamilyhouse Quaaludes were fun but was like being drunk 10x’s over. Just like cocaine, sex for a woman was good on them. Wasn’t a fan of speed and don’t know what they were cut with (white crosses, blacks etc) because all it did was make your heart beat extremely fast and made you irritable after you came down but people took it because it kept them awake to study or they felt like superman when playing sports, however the come down not so good and it was super bad for you

While it is true that most people using illicit opioids first used prescription opioids (though not necessarily legally prescribed to them)... The vast majority of people who are prescribed opioids never develop an addiction. Even when this does occur, to what extent is it actually caused by the drug itself? There's usually LOTS of better explanations for why somebody might develop an unhealthy compulsion to use a substance, than mere pharmacology.
As for the "habit house" (i.e. asylum) idea of treatment, look into the history of how that worked in managing alcoholism leading up to alcohol prohibition. It seems that any approach to deepen stigma is not helpful with problematic substance use.

I agree that our language makes unproductive distinctions but I also believe using terms like “plant medicine” talks about intention in a way that can be a-moral. It’s to say we’re going to do something with guidelines. There will be a container for the chaos. Some people want to walk into that container, some people’s medicine is in the chaos- annihilation. What if we created spaces for people to annihilate themselves off the streets. Would they safely come to their own zero point in the way they didn’t know they were seeking in the first place?

There are countless places in the U.S. alone where drugs are used as if they were already legal. The ghettos, back-water towns, high income neighborhoods and in those places drugs affect more than just the person looking for pleasure. People act as if drug use happens inside a bubble and doesn't affect those around them. You have mothers, gathers, etc., spending money on their pleasures and not feeding their families, not paying rent, neglecting their responsibilities and family. That doesn't take into account the crimes and accidents that drug pleasure seeking individuals cause and/or commit. I personally don't care if a person uses drugs or not. If they want to use drugs until they die, fine, do it. It's your body, but don't get others involved. I think personality traits play a big part in addiction as well. But until you can isolate the drug user and prevent them from negatively affecting others, measures have to be put in place. The laws, measures, methods are far from perfect but if anyone has a better idea please step up. How can we let people get high but not have to deal with the people who can't handle their shit.
There are already existing laws that would penalize those who "can't handle their shit" sans involving drugs in the legalities. Theft, child neglect, violence etc etc. are all punishable offenses alone and if someone who happens to be a drug user commits one of them, then they should be held accountable. There are plenty of non drug users who commit crimes that effect other's lives, and plenty of drug users who don't commit any crimes that effect other's lives so it's a flawed argument/system to illegalize the sole use of any substance in itself. i wont bother going down the alcohol hypocrisy debate...

I'm absolutely open to exploring this and I believe very much in freedom. However, I feel we need to build up the individuals in our society and shift the collective, educate and empower first. What's difficult with drugs is for those of us who have addicts in our family or have seen how drugs can overtake someone. I've seen more of that in life than those who can use substances thoughtfully and not put that substance over everything. As a woman, I've been put in bad positions even just drinking alcohol or being sober and being around men drinking. I have two parents who have abused drugs off and on and I've seen the affects of that and how it's tore apart families. Witnessing what other people have been through has an imprint and people using drugs can become extremely self serving and not themself. People can behave extremely diff on substances. This intelligent, compassionate, beautiful and articulate man may find benefits from drugs and be able to use them mindfully but how many people can do that? I don't think their should be no drugs, I think we need a healthier society and then either we wouldn't need to do them or they could be used therepeutically. Like anything their is differences from drugs, psychedelics vary very much from heroine and illicit different experiences. How can we deny that? I'm about choice but I'm about empowering people and leaning into our pain not medicating. Many people using drugs are self medicating and are chasing and burning through all their dopamine, seratonin.

As a recovered addict , i can honestly say I believe he's wrong on so many levels . Though he has some great points. FIRST of all, these "opiates" they're selling aren't reeal opiates .. it's worse then heoroin , it's more addicting and they know aexactly wtf they're doing. I have had countless peopel I know overdose. BUT they are overdosing because of like he said , a mix or whatever the case not the oxy or whatever by itself.. ALTHOUGH, these oxy pills etc that they sell are getting these people so addicted they don't care about the risks.. Big pharma is absolutely evil and they know what they're doing and giving.. the answer isn't to let these addicts keep going deeper into their addiction WITHOUT some sort of intervention. Maybe not as crazy strict as we have it but they need SOMETHING or they will most definately use until they find the one that kills them. They need to hit their own bottom but they'll never hit it and survive without getting pushed towards the healthy good way of life .. PERIOD... the problem isn't the drug itself it's th e person and wether they cross that line into addiction. And I'm sorry if your not an addict and have never had trouble stoping drugs you will never understand to the full extend of how almost near impossible it is for most to ever stop doing them. Most people are in denial and don't even realize they're addicted too.... I think he's saying the attention should be taken away from the drug and towards the reasons for the addiction.
As the majority have no problem taking these substances and it's been that way for a long time.
Implementing rules under a bias like yours (no offence) would effect the majority who don't have an issue and worse those who need it for pain relief for example.

Dr. Carl Hart isn't as clever as I remember him being when I was younger. He's a nice, smart, down to earth dude, but he's not on the level I remember him being... doesn't think deep enough... the way he dismisses religion and mythology was strange... pretty one dimensional. Drugs not bad is his motto/mantra it seems. He doesn't indulge in fantasy and is concerned with the here and now--and the here and now is quite horrific, yet mundane

It was absolutely my choice to start using meth. I was 15 yrs old the first time, and I absolutely loved the feeling. My mother was killed in a drunk driving accident when I was 11, and the meth made me forget all that pain. It got to a point where I became very violent while using. I was arrested for felony possession, and a few months later for assault. For me it was a wake up call. The things I did while being an addict still disgust me at times. It becomes a problem when you become a violet person because of the drugs. Meth is one of those drugs that does hurt the people that aren't even using it.

I didn't hear anything in 20+ minutes that The fact remains that any drug that alters the majority of users actions to harm others (ie. meth use and greater incidences of violence and theft) do require law and rule to protect the greater law abiding society. Appreciate the tough work many people do to combat bad drug use daily, like cops and social workers and doctors. You guys ignored that in the conversation. Stop or greatly reduce violence related to any drug use and then the court may listen to you about the changing the system. AM, you ought to go live on the streets for a couple weeks to experience the suffering going on out there and see the fallout of all these synthetic chemicals. Full on despair in the cities because the HIGH over rules any way to be a civil human. watch the interviews on the Soft White Underbelly channel about the addict story.

We can’t even handle our addictions to caffeine, sugar and Alcohol. No doubt that SOME people can, but that’s definitely a minority and until we no longer have tons of people bumming off the system that the rest of us pay for, not a great idea to enable uncensored drug use.

It’s a very interesting concept but I would like to say something that may be controversial. The way he talks sounds like he is struggling and distressed in every interview and ever talk or lecture he does. He acts irritated about almost everything people say. He reminds me of someone who doesn’t have their smoke or their fix. I know this is very judge mental but he reminds me of someone who can’t deal with the world and they can’t wait to get home and grab their needle or fix. He hasn’t progressed his speaking skills at all. He talks about addicts struggling with their relationship and yet he struggles to get through every interview and lecture. His voice is shaky all the time which means he is nervous or anxious which means he is could possibly experience a withdrawal. He sounds like an addict that’s been away from his meds for too long. It seems like from the beginning of the interview he was at odds with Aubrey for no reason and struggled with simple questions. If he’s not addicted he seems very dependent for his distress and there is a fine line between dependence and addiction.
