  • AIR SOURCE Heat Pumps - How They Work & What They Cost To Run
    In this video I discuss my time so far with the 9kw Thermotec inverter Air source heat pump. We take a brief look into HOW an air source heat pump works, and also how much this season it has cost me to run to keep the Koi pond at 24 celcius.
    I hope you enjoy.

    Awesome vid Si, I always find ASHP's an interesting subject. Not as expensive as I was expecting to be honest, considering you were heating to 24c. Having said that,with such high ambient temperatures this year your ASHP hasn't had to work too hard to achieve 24c. Have you considered solar to assist/ supply your ASHP? I do totally agree with giving the fish a winter and backing off the colour and growth food as for a few months. Cheers Scotty 🐟⛩️🇯🇵🇬🇧

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před rokem +1

      Cheers scotty👍 yeah I wasn't too blown away by the cost, I was expecting more if I'm honest. In regards to solar, I have been thinking about for a while now to get 3/4 panels on top of the shed as it's such a sun trap up there. I recon with that, a battery or two, an inverter, I think I could go totally off grid with the pond.👌

    • @scottjackson1632
      @scottjackson1632 Před rokem +1

      That's exactly what I have in mind for our pond Si, if I can run the pond off of an array of solar with the back up of the grid then I think it would be a worth while investment. 👍

    All depends on the weather warm weather the heat pumps are more efficient and colder weather it will be costing more because the unit is dragging cold air in. I agree with you mate I used to wire these up when they were getting installed in houses. They are not the best at all for heating your home. I bet you don’t live far from me bud I live in Newbold. If you what a pond visit your welcome to pop in at any time 👍👍

      Thanks Andrew. I'm in Staveley 👍 they do work in some circumstances, but the house has to be designed specifically for a heat pump to get the absolute best out of them. 👍

    I don't heat in the winter december to april but my pond never went below 12C last winter due mainly to the insulation.
    but I do heat from may to end of november and cover the pond at night in early spring late autumn with a 1kw electro heater.
    My heating costs £1.47 a day on economy 7 timed for 7 hours @ 21p/kWh. costs me about £300 for 7 months of heating.
    I heat to 25C in the middle of summer, from june to end of september and I slowly raise/drop temps in spring and autumn, currently at 18C and still uncovered 9am to 9pm.

      @DavesKoiPond Před rokem +1

      @@UpNorthKoiPond yeah, we stick as much on economy 7 timer as we can, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer ect...👍

    Thank you Simon, I found your content realy interesting, I have not got an ASHP though I have considered it, I have always let the pond go with the ambient temprature, I also do not cover, my current pond is 16 years old, as to the running cost £2 a day for the season you cover, I would say that is good, less than 1/2 pint a beer a day, I have subscribed and hit your bell for notifications and look forward to your future content, best wishes Tony, Farmoor Koi.

    I thought I would advise everyone about an issue I have just experienced with my ASHP. I have the same unit as Si and I am now looking to change my gas boiler for the house to an ASHP. I contacted my local council some advice and they advised that I would need Planning Permission for the existing and new ASHP’s. They basically said that because my existing ASHP was closer than 3m to my neighbours boundary I would need PP including an Acoustic Assessment. How many people out there have sited there ASHP within 3m I wonder, has anyone else heard about this?

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před 5 měsíci

      That could well be because only 1 ASHP unit falls under permitted development that doesn't require any planning so long as it's compressor unit doesn't exceed 0.6m3 and meets MCS standards. This can change if the building is listed etc. ASHP are only required to be a minimum of 1m from a neighbours boundary. That's more than likely why you are being asked to go through planning if you are exchanging out the gas boiler.
      As someone that's installed a few ASHP in my line of work, I've not faced an issue where this has been a problem.

    Hi Simon another good video mate!
    have you got your heatpump set to 8? Iv got the same pump and my minimum heating temp setting in the parameters is set to 10 degrees at the min.. i know this can be changed as from factory its set to no lower than 15 degrees.
    i have been told any lower can damage the pump when it goes into a defrost cycle. Do you have any veiws on this? Cheers

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely. Through the summer, especially in the UK we're lucky to have a week or two of really good temperatures. By the time the pond is at a good temp, the weather is starting to cool down again. So it's not giving you a great deal of time to really pile the food down them.

    It becomes even cheaper when you have solar panels on the house roof available with grants which then pays for itself whilst giving you free electricity

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před rokem

      It does but in a lot of cases you are basically renting out your roof to the grid, and for very poor energy buy back prices. Some circumstances it works brilliantly for, but a lot of others not so much, unless you personally invest your money into it but even then it takes a long time to recuperate that investment. I'm not saying they aren't good, because they are, but I would NEVER have panels on the roof via grants or some sort of deal with a renewable energy firm.👍

    Hello I have recently built an 8000 gallon pond fully insulated and planning on running heating from April to October extending the summer anyone have any idea what this would cost on an airsorce heat pump, or know anyone with a similar size pond that would know

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před rokem

      Hi Daniel. It really would be difficult to say. What I can say though is for your size pond you would be looking at something in the 24kw+ range of heaters.
      It's quite possible, depending on your location that a gas boiler MAY be your cheapest option for your size pond. Is it a raised pond, in ground pond, sheltered/indoor pond?
