It's Not All Sunshine & Rainbows - Koi Pond Chilodonella

  • In this video, we're diving into the not-so-glamorous side of Koi keeping, treating for the parasite known as Chilodonella. To do this I opted to go with a treatment of Alparex and salt, which wasn't without it's challenges. Also we take a look at additional moving bed filter media, Oase pond pads.
    Enjoy the video.

    waterbarn koi, seems to be a running theme once you get one in your pond, outbreaks galore.

    Nice update Si👍. I swear by those pond pads, I’m up to 40l now and planning on using more👍. BTW, that ivy behind you pond I’d bindweed, get it out before it takes over your garden😳. Keep up the good work😊👍

      Thanks Phil, I remember you saying how much you rated them, and for the surface area you can't really go wrong.
      As for the bindweed, indeed it does get out of control sometimes 😅 I'll have to get on it👍

    Blockwork is getting there, looks spot on mate 💪
    Alpharex is good stuff, but need a minimum of double dose. I tend to use it at 3 x dose. Clears out Costia, whitespot chilidonella etc out in one treatment 👌
    That's the downside with premixed medication these days 👎👎 the recommendated dose on the packaging is a joke 🤐
    Hope you get it sorted quickly 🎉

      @koikanalen 3x dose on Alparex 😮 yikes. I wouldn't dare, they hate just a single dose never mind 2x or 3x😅 I thought it would do the job with 0.6 salt as its usually worked, then was astonished when the 2nd dose didn't work😕 thankfully, they've now had the FMG treatment and it seems to have done the trick👍

      @@UpNorthKoiPond its pretty safe. The "old" dose of acriflavin is 3-5g pr 1000 liters and malacite is 0.25g pr 1000 liters. Alpharex is no way near that, even with 3x dose 😊 🤐
      No wonder it dont work most of the times 🫣

    Parasites of protozoan origin could be found anywhere if you look hard enough. Aren't you more interested in making the KOI itself more active to keep them at bay? That would be a much more effective solution, I would think, to mature the pond water and turn the overall ecosystem upwards...

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před měsícem +1

      @@atsuminaoki9910 the fish are always very active, right up until they are not. They get fed well with high quality food, they have unpolluted water and have a good flow in the pond. These things happen 🤷‍♂️

      @@UpNorthKoiPond There are no ponds with glass windows in Japan, so I can't make any comparisons, but whenever I see the immaturity of their swimming behaviour, I wonder if it is an obstacle to the instinctive habits we are always trying to bring out in them in this time of year.

    Shame about the parasites, most of us seem to have had those issues at one point. 🤬

    That looks like bind weed get it out quick or you never get rid of it. It spreads like wild fire into other gardens. Just got on top of mine after 5 years, but my neighbours won’t deal with it in their gardens. Killed 4 trees.

    It seems that parasites have been particularly hard to shift this year, which suggests we are either dealing with ninja parasites or the medications have been nurfed again 🤷‍♀️

    • @UpNorthKoiPond
      @UpNorthKoiPond  Před měsícem +1

      The medications certainly get tampered with to some extent I believe, fluke treatments more so. Whether Alparex has had any revisions I have no idea, wouldn't surprise me though. Take care Busy😊
