  • This is a cassette tape I made in 1985 featuring Tony Williams and his Rockers FM show on BBC Radio London Sunday afternoons. I don't know the exact date. It is a real mixture of styles from the computerised Sleng-Teng start with Sugar Minnott through to some tough roots and some soppy lovers. Tony Williams goes all out with the bubbling synth effects and use of echo and is really rather "heavy".
Featuring, at the end, an interview with Early B 'The Doctor'. Music from artists including Al Campbell, Delroy Wilson, Echo Minnott, Bobby Melody, Earl 16, Tony Tuff, Levi Roots, Jimmy Lindsey, Nerious Joseph, The Meditations, Leroy Smart, Cocoa Tea and many more.
I originally uploaded this in a higher resolution 2.6gb (twice) but youtube's processing messed up the sync with video and sound so it didn't make sense so I deleted (annoying!) - don't think it liked the format I made using on old version of imovie. So here is a lower res version which runs okay this time, as I wanted it, and the visuals don't look too bad either, a bit fuzzy maybe, but if one is inebriated, or not wearing their specs then it doesn't really matter :)
A couple of the records jump, but that's more to do with the vinyl and Tony Williams's turntables, rather than the recording. Doesn't mess too much. But overall the sound is pretty crisp for a 28 year old tape transferred over digitally. It's mainly a rootical session, some digi, but there is a sprightly lovers section around the 55 minute mark.
    wikidub in the mix.
    ENJOY! :)
Here's another cassette recording of Rockers FM Tony Williams in 1987

Life is unfair. Why didn't I get to meet and see the late great Dr Early B live? I am extremely sad ...Sunday Dish / One wheel wheelie wickid tunes even decades after

who said cassettes were dead. Reggae on Tape rising like a phoenix from the flames. You could take a tape to the party with no fear of losing your treasured vinyl in the old days before digital.

The rice and Peas show , i used to vex , dad used to cut the sunday joint with an electric carving knife , which used to interfere with the radio signal i was trying to record . Funny though even after all those years those old tapes don't sound bad , bet you cd's may not stand the passing of 30-40 years ,

A good bet I have this session on tape. I used to tape nuff Tony Williams and David Rodigan. Plus, throw in a whole heap of tapes from the pirate stations, musical archives.
