"He's got the low stuff anchoring, he's got the hoo-hoos up top, and he has the clicks going with the slaps and pops too... THREE DIMENSIONAL PLAYING!" -Cory Wong on Victor Wooten
A better description there has not been
i didnt pay attention to the hoo hoos...thought of them maybe some undesired artifact of the strings.......now I am waiting for them,,,where are my hoo hoos....
I couldnt have said it better...just total badassery!
No Jank and the dwoink-duhs though
The tightest horn section in music today. Killer.
15:25 When Victor bending the string during the solo, the sound wave of bass in DAW even twists for a while
Gotta love Cory's enjoyment of everything - it's absolutely infectious!
LEGO City Tow Truck (set no. 7638)
It's so crazy just thinking you know what the horn lines are, then diving into them and (as a bass player) having your mind blown. Obvs Victor is Victor, but the horn heads never miss.

I heard he also plays guitar or bass from time to time. 😂

And my man
10:09 I love that you talk about the importance of arrangement. It puts into words a recent experience I had. I saw a successful "funk jam band" live. They were good, but before too long, I started losing interest, and felt numb to the whole thing. It was just some guys grooving, but with no structure or, as you say here, "finger print". Contrasting that with seeing The Wong Notes, which played with more intention, and had alternating sections of precision in addition to improvisation, which kept me as a listener engaged. Real food for thought as I try to do my own thing.
On a smaller scale, can I also recommend The Consouls who have engaged a whole new generation of jazz listeners using vgm as jazz standards. They arrange the tunes but have solo sections and record mostly live performances. Their 'Radios' are brilliant.
it's like mathematicians....
I believe it was Charlie Parker that said "if you play more than 3 choruses, you're just practicing". And that's what jam bands feel like. Somebody taking a 10 minute solo to noodle and practice. It's exhausting.
Horns sound amazing! Nice when the recording chain in on point and you don't have to fix it in the mix!
Man these are so good! Adds a human element to all these fantastic tunes. Always stoked when I see an "On The One" notification!
The Victor Wooten interview was one of my favourites in the series, such an interesting and thoughtful guy but also a monster bass player. Love the breakdown!
This is some of the best musical CZcams content I have seen basically ever. Thank you Cory for doing this! I am deep in the rabbit hole that is your library of content and it’s all so incredible. It’s all such a joyful listening experience and such great inspiration. 🙌🏼
the video editing is just perfect
The revelation that this is inspired by flight of the bumblebee makes this so much better
Thank you for sharing! Missing Petar and Michael intercommunication :)
Thanks for that breakdown, hearing Victor's incredible solo isolated was amazing. More, please!
Absolutely love these breakdowns. Can't wait to see more!
This is absolute gold. Can’t wait to see you guys live.
First time i heard the tune i was MIND-BLOWNED by the harmonics lick. The way it interacts with the main groove i fell off my chair. Never heard anything like it.
Cory, Thanks for continuing to teach me so much. I Have probably listened to Direct Flyte 30 times and I heard things in this video I obviously missed. Can’t wait to see you in Boston !!!
Been waiting for this one!!!! That 3rd chorus Victor takes is absolute wizardry!
Such a wonderful video! Mastery of all kinds! Thank you for the energy!
I also feel the excitement here too Cory! 😬
Thanks for this video! I love this!
As a trumpet player, I go crazy with Vitor on bass 😅 it's surreal.
the litte animation inserts slay me -- these videos are the best
Seeing y’all in Richmond on my birthday! Bringing the whole family out! I’ve seen Vic a number of times, but it will be my first time seeing you and your band live. Thank you for bringing so much joy and insight into this new era of music!
A perfect birthday gift is seeing this in my subscription feed. I can't wait to hear this.
Yes Cory! Really been looking forward to some On the Ones from Power Station! Love getting the insight into your work and arranging and hearing you dissect your tracks is always a great learning experience.
Masterclass... All of it, bro!!
Theres not enough tracks in this mix to hold all that talent. What a fuckin party this track is 🎉
This is so cool, thank you for doing this Cory!
Can't wait to see you and the "Kenny Buttons" in St Louis in FEB.!!!!!!! love ya'll man!
"I thought he was just playing a lick and then Victor was like booo weee! boooo wee!" Hhahaha I love these videos so much and every one of cory's sounds to describe a lick are always spot on
March 4th! I will be there. Very excited and really looking forward to it!
True, he’s such a nice guy, with a healthy and positive approach to learning and playing music. In a perfect world Victor Wooten would teach a core music curriculum in every school on the planet.
I've seen the Wooten family playing live, I've seen the Flecktones and chatted with Vic after the show, and I can't WAIT to see you all together in Atlanta!
As a Prince fan Michael Nelson's signature is all over these horn arrangements. Amazing
Cory Wong's staff has nothing to envy Victor Wooten. They are all excellent professionals, with an incredible level, both musically and commercially, setting a course for the new generations.
This was a really cool break down. I hope you have time to do it for more songs. I'm planning on seeing you in Atlanta!
beyerdynamic gang 🤙
This song is my favorite Cory Wong Song, it was my Spotify place 1 with 250 plays or something, i am sooooo excited about this video!!!!!
Hilarious and informative for one of my favorite jams you all did!
Vic is such a monster. Cannot wait to see him in a few months time
Hi cory!
Me and my daughters can't stop dancing to your groovy tunes!
Tnx man 🤩
🕺🕺
always a pleasure Cory🙌
That was very instructive, thanks Cory 🙏
THESE simply ROCK. Thanks man!
I've always felt like a little bleed-through gives it a live sound that's pretty cool. Great stuff as always monsieur Wong!
I agree, totally broski. Every time Ive ever been put in charge of sound and recording, I move percussion close to drums on purpose and sometimes even the keys, if it isn't a stereo-out board, if it's a hammy or a Rhodes.
I have done side by sides, by moving percs away from drums and placing overheads more conservatively. The smallest bit of bleed will make tracks sound more cohesive, it kind of drives me nuts. Like, it gets called an accident or a mistake like....ok god damn...I'm honestly a fan of live sesh recording where possible. I've had occasions where I had everyone come in for a soundcheck, to check the live mix. Wrote down everything I needed to change and alter and put filters on/change mics, and told everyone they could split if they want while I do the work. I spent 4 hours doin it. Called em back, soundcheck and boy howdy....it made my nipples tight af lmao. We were all feeling it and decided 'fuck it' we threw 6 songs instead of only 3 lmao. Good day
I love you guys! This was so sick to watch! I’m coming to see you live in Portland maine!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait to see you, victor and Kenni!!!!!
So excited to see you guys in STL!! With Fleck tunes too 🤯🤯🤯
Incredible Horns!!!
Professional horn player here (🎷) and i couldnt agree more!
Yes! I've been waiting for Power Station On the Ones!!! 🙏😍
This reminds me of when I talk to someone with my headphones on and I’m being told that I don’t need to yell but I just keep on yelling ‘cause I can’t here myself😅
I was really hoping you'd do a On The One for this tune! I missed Petar on this episode yelling about metallica
the horns that are about to play at 11:28 always remind me of one of the tunes on the soundtrack to the mid-90s computer game 'Interstate 76'. Which is by no means a bad thing.
Can't wait for PORTLAND!! (Maine)
Absolutely professional guys
This was EXCELLENT!!
+1 for the editor as always
see yea at the palace in Minneapolis...cant wait...bought tickets as soon as I found out
I live in Minneapolis and I am just discovering Corey Wong and the Wongnotes. Better late than never!
Sonny AND Vic on the tour together. O. M. G.
Amazing!!
Oh MAN I can’t wait to see you guys in Madison!
I suck as a bass player (truth), and I know nothing about recording and mixing. But I could watch Cory do this all day. His enthusiasm is contagious.
Sheer fun!
And the music is wild! No wonder I've watched the original several times.
I share the same feeling as you about Vic, such a great person.
i cant wait to see this live!!! see yall in Detroit
Hey, final comment... I don't usually write as much, but people should really check out the large section with the isolated Victor bass. There's some really amazing stuff buried in there (not buried too much, because I knew it was there). It's great to hear it in isolation, with some narrative to frame it, and then with different instrument groups.
Hi Cory, just met Kenni in Bismarck and he hooked me up with your channel. Great music, brother man 👍🏻
Oh how I miss these
i love this series
larry Graham's bassline 20:20 (Earthquake), freaking incredible Victor incorporates in his solo! crazy
Masterclass
Sick vid! Really learning a lot from this stuff. Yall gotta get those Shure clip-ons btw Cory not lying theyre great and not expensive.
I’d be down for hearing complete album session alternate takes and Cory Re-Mixes. Can’t get enough of this stuff.
Right? It's not that there's anything wrong with the album versions, we just study those songs over and over in detail we wouldn't mind hearing a different view
Masterclass.
What an awesome bass player...
I HAVE TICKETS for Feb 22 in DC!! I found you because of the variety show vid w Vic.
Turns out I play every sunday with your keyboard player's cousin :) (who's also a kbd player)
Cory, here's an interesting tip for micing up percussion. Attach a lapel mic (maybe something like a Sennheiser MKE2) to the shirt of the percussionist. That way, no matter what instrument is being played, the mic is right there. Especially effective for hand toys (shakers, etc), but picks up congas and bongos too. You could go crazy and use two lapels attached at the shoulders for some stereo spread. Either way, it reduces the mic count (and therefore the bleed) and is very effective (esprcially in a live PA mix)
16:36 HAHAHAH
Let’s isolate the Bouee ~ Cory Wong 2023
Very nice Cory....that definitely has some funk on it....
A horn section just hits hard
That really cool
man, you can't go Wong with this energy!
Where's the Victa' interview??!!! Hopefully, we will see you both in Paris soon!
Brilliant
victor wooten is the freakin god of bass
I can’t imagine not being a musician and trying to understand any terminology Cory is using, he goes from Altissimo to Who who’s
Computer engineer level...
Most redundant Cory statement of all time - “I’m very excited!”
Highest level!
I'll BE THERE FOR THE TOUR AT THE 9:30 CLUB!!! LETS GOOOO!!!
Cory I would love a video on your daw proc from start to finish and how you clean up the instruments.
the foundamental of bass
buuueee
uhh uhh
ticky tacka
Victor is a treasure. His books are the antidote to soulless, selfish musicmaking.
😎👍 ...siete fantastici
Oh HELL yes
This is awesome. I would love it if you could post all the isolated audio tracks somewhere.
yes please!
Cant wait for London in Oct, can you persuade Vic to join the tour?
We stand with Michael. Raw is not that dope. Great vid.
"It's like...the best horn fixer guy...in the world...who lives in Iowa?" Guessing that's Aaron Barnard of Barnard Instrument Repair, a great dude.
Victor Wooten is also freaking awesome
