The fight scene between Aang and Zuko in this episode is one of my favourite things in the show just because of how much it reminded me of old Jackie Chan stuff.

appreciate that jay and adam appreciate the storycraft that went into this show instead of being purists demanding every story beat and character arc match the original show exactly. unlike some other reactions i've watched...
This episode really impressed me with how well it interwove so many different stories into a cohesive whole.
man it definitely is my least favorite of the entire first season. the next episode being my second least favorite. I think the pacing is really REALLY bad.

I always liked how this story 1) had a real villain, a man who was corrupted by power, his priveleged son, his psychopath daughter 2) didn't make everyone even in the army a bad person.
They don't even do that right in Marvel.

While I agree that I like a bunch of how they changed and merged stories, I also feel like some of the stories got lost. I like what they did with Jet. The mechanist ended up being there for Sokka instead of Aang's story arch, I'm a bit sad that Teo ended up being only a McGuffin to get the party to the mechanist. I just really liked the message his character was about. I feel like I'd rather have some moments be cut, instead of it being in for fan service, but losing it's meaning of why people liked it to begin with. All the additions they are doing, especially with the fire nation, are very well thought out and work fantastically.
Well, even if a moment loses its original meaning, it can find new meaning in the process (whether now, down the line, or both). And we still can simultaneously enjoy the original as well, so it's not like we're limited to only one or the other
^After all, Teo is still doing his absolute best in both versions; the only difference is not letting his disability get to him, vs trying to do what he/Sai can do for the world, both of which seem equally meaningful to me. Meanwhile, the Mechanist is about equal as he still helps gives meaning to one of our main cast (Sokka instead of Aang this time), whereas Jet has a better influence on Katara here than originally (helping her overcome her bending block, vs just being a love interest).
That diversity of moments/meanings, least imo, is a good/important thing to be able to appreciate :)

Aang describing the city as a living mountain makes me wonder if that mountain is the shell of the Earth Lion Turtle. I don’t think it’s ever explained where all the Lion Turtles are now, so that would be an interesting inclusion.
BTW That's the same voice actor as in the animated series that screams about the Cabbages... which is just plain awesome! :) Unless I was totally misinformed :) I didn't actually check! :) But yeah... I agree they teased it JUST long enough :) But they knew what we were wanting! :)
Back when I was playing a campaign of the Avatar ttrpg, my absolute little chaos gremlin firebender PC lit a cabbage cart on fire during a fight and gave my table our own “MY CABBAGES” moment, so seeing how they did it this episode made me feel very seen

I don’t love how azula was portrayed in this first season, but I’m gonna wait for s2 to really pass judgment since that’s when we get to see her interact with Zuko more. . Your reactions to her were great though. I wasn’t expecting her to come up this early either. Also, my cabbages!!! I do like the combination of the Jet storyline and the mechanist lines though. And that they kept Sokka good with machines.
