The guzheng playing "leaves from the vine" with single notes during the funeral and then as it continues to play as we see them together. Stupid tears 😢
Zuko and Iroh's story so well done here. Literally teared up a few times in this episode and show.
Did you notice the little soldier boy song?
"Lu Ten's Funeral" has quickly become my favourite soundtrack piece from any media. Takashi Furukawa has been knocking out the park, especially by using 'Leaves on the vine" as a motif.
The acting from Iroh, Zuko, and the Earthbender Captain were fantastic this episode. I've thoroughly enjoyed this season, some good bits up ahead as well.
The moment at the end where Iroh is laughing and putting on his "jolly Uncle Iroh" face while his eyes are filled with tears like?? Oscar worthy
SECRET TUNNEL!!!! SECRET TUNNEL!!!! THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN!!!!!
SRCRET SECRET SECRET SECRET TUNNELLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
Built a path to be together…..
And I forget the next couple of lines but then it goes…

Hearing that rendition of Leaves from the Vine is just such a punch to the feels.. Dang water benders bending tears out of my eyes.
I am not completely convinced it's not just a cheap trick to make us like the live action more... sorry to rain on the parade.
@@davidbergfors6820 It works either way.
This is a bad take. It makes sense that its so important yo iroh and fits that he would sing it every year in memory of his son. Its ok if you dont like other choices they made and dont like the series over all but that doesnt make this choice a cheap one@davidbergfors6820
@@patrickmcisaac3142 if I am correct they are banking on our previous connection to this music from the Animation to make this scene more impactful. I consider that cheap.
I may have some concerns for the show, it's not perfect, but over all I enjoyed it.
This episode just runs you through the emotional gauntlet doesn't it...... elation for SECRET TUNNEL and the knife to the heart for Leaves from the Vine. Mako will be loved and remembered forever by Avatar fandom
Leaves from the Vine will always and forever be 'Too Soon', my heart every time I hear it
Ugh so true!
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee being Iroh, and Carson in Asoka/Mandelorian, and Appa (heehee!) in Kim's Convenience -- it's wonderful to see him in these great roles.
I still can’t unsee him as Carson Teva which makes watching him in this confusing and amusing.
I knew Jay was get in trouble for creating a whole new flavor.
I do a lot of nitpicking with live-action remakes. And this show has a bunch it can improve on. BUT this is the episode that won me over. Everything they are doing with Iroh and Zuko, and overall adding to the story, is really really well done. It's meaningful and well thought out and well written. More of that! That's why I think S2/3 of this show have a good chance of being phenomenal.
The surprise ads are so funny 😂, GOTTEM!
The leaves from the vine song makes me cry or at the very least tear up every single frikin time. I love these scenes with Iroh & zuko so much ❤
Zuko and Iroh are the main characters for this live action to me. This felt like a love letter to their kinship and brought out such an emotional response from me. I cannot wait for episode 6 reaction
Absolutely love how this show expands the material and gives us new emotional scenes with Iroh and Zuko or the broken soldier. That alone justifies this adaption so much. It's not a perfect adaption, but I love most what they did and I'm so happy we are going to see the full story with season 2 and 3 too. Especially excited for the Zuko redemption arc, they will do that perfectly.
When my father was born, his parents couldn't agree on a name. The hospital got pissy and demanded a name so they could complete the birth certificate. They decided to disagree and settled on a "just for now" name, "Baby Boy." So dad's given name was Baby Boy. They later legally "jr'd" him, but his birth certificate never got changed. Whenever my brother was feeling frosty and we were out, he'd ask the office in the store to page "Baby Boy (lastname). Bro knew itd send dad off the rails, but he wouldn't give a whipping in public.
Wow. 😂
They are essentially adapting the whole story, not per book. So they are moving things around for efficency in time, use of sets and story beats and am loving it. Long time lovers of the show will know the whole story by heart and yet are still surprised where certain story beats will be placed and it's fun not knowing 😊😊
I loved how they connected different storylines in the show. They didn't just throw them all together but really thought how different episodes from the animation would work better together
Absolutely love this episode, the reverse role that bumi and aang have in this episode is fantastic, bumis speech at the end is so well done. Also everything with zuko and iroh was so good, and the leaves of the vine playing just ahhhh!!!
The live orchestra version of secret tunnel is a live changer. Iroh is amazing.
My popcorn came today! I was so thrilled. Thanks for the code, Adam and Jay
What was your shipping turn around like? Ad suggested Same Day Pack and Ship... with Delivery in like 3-4 days (US). I just ordered Friday and the Weekend probably isn't helping (along with a Promo)... but haven't gotten a shipment notification/update yet. Did they Ship via USPS, UPS, or FedEx ?
After hearing Akira Toriyama death, i needed that laugh during that commercial bit
Remember, every smoosh/craunch they do frees air minutes for expansion elsewhere. NO SPOILERS, but I have see videos from later episodes that include material not covered in the Nick version, and some are gut wrenching.
Yep! Because we got secret tunnel here that means it won't be at the beginning of season 2, which is great because until Toph shows up the beginning of season 2 is the slowest part of it imo
The ad reads. My god. They’re so good 🤣
And it really makes sense, since they had very similar stories, of doing what you have to do to survive, but from opposite sides, one caves in and the other ramps up the fight. And really I love them together to show the two sides of the same coin
Yay, they are playing Secret Tunnel I'm going to feel joy. (Cue instrumental Leaves On The Vine) 😢WHY!!! IM NOT READY FOR THE FEELS!
Day 1 I had to pause right after that scene for 30 minutes to get my shit together I was not ready at all
20:43 oh noo. Oh noooo. Watching this episode with you guys is like the third time I’m seeing it. I just now realized this music is that sad little soldier boy song that Iroh sang about his son in the original. Oh nooo 😢
Good news boys. We are getting book two AND three. I would guess they will film back to back.
They get to finish which is rare on 'Flix
I'd contemplate a two batch mix of peach+vanilla and tangerine+vanilla, call it peaches 'n cream or something.
I could watch these popcorn ads for like days lol.
If you didn't notice, they changed just one pronoun to make Oma and Shu both women. Such a small bit of queer representation but it makes so much sense to have the tale of two lovers forbidden from seeing each other but able to move mountains for their love be a tale of queer resilience.
Iroh and his "Soldier Boy". In the animated episode when the characters had a day off, Iroh celebrated his son's birthday. I cried. If they do that in the live version, I may need more than one box of tissues. 🎵Secret Tunnel 🎵needs to be on a playlist. Bumi and his wise advice. I'm glad they renewed it for season 2 and 3.
They really did a masterful job of interweaving the many different storylines. It's like they still have all the same plot point index cards in their conspiracy board, but they moved around all the various strings connecting them into, I daresay, a better overall story. There are almost no single 'filler' storylines anymore, as everything they did use has a much deeper connection to the rest. So very well done.
Clearly Jay has missed his true calling - marketing 😆
Love the nice, comedic ad right before Zuko, Iroh, and the Leaves From the Vine instrumental rip my heart out.

MOLE! MOLE!
In all of the chaos and uncertainty of the universe, sometimes two beings of different but equally glowing presence cross paths, and the world is forever changed for the better. I don't know how you two found each other, but thank you for sharing your light with the rest if us.
Yes ive been drinking but i meant it. 😁
lol brooo not gonna lie I had no idea that that was not an ad until you mentioned it that got me Bryan looked so mad 🤣
A lot of the complaining online had a lot of hyperfixation on the nuances lost from the changes made in service of streamlining the plot, and the characterization of characters like Bumi which in some respects completely subverts the original - but I think despite all the changes these episodes actually really nicely match the theses of the original show in broad strokes.
I think there are certainly pacing issues in the early episodes in pursuit of specific plot beats but I'm just so charmed by the things they added wrt Iroh and Zuko I can't get too mad about it. Seeing a hint of Iroh's old personality peeking out during the exchange with his captor was amazing because the original show doesn't really do all that much to depict what he was like before he was broken into the uncle he became.
bless adam and jay for not allowing these changes to overshadow enjoying the adaptation for what it is. unlike some other reactors who completely melted down over changes to the "secret tunnel" plot.
That ad was great!
I actually watched it 😅
Navatar for the win!
The way I ugly cried through this episode. This and 6 are my favorites for the season, hands down. I just love that like you said, they created such a clean story and it allows them the time to have a relationship between two characters breathe and adds so much depth to what we already know from the animated show. Ugh. 10s across the board.
MY CABBAGES!!!!
Secret Tunnel!
Heck yeah!! Best part of being sick. Can’t miss your videos
The intro ads keep getting better and better! 😂
I don't know if it was as effective for people who hadn't already seen Iroh's Day from the cartoon, but that lovely instrumental version of Leaves From The Vine coming in when Zuko starts being sincere was absolutely devastating
the leaves from the vine music in the background really got me..
The orchestral version of leaves on the vine playing once Zuko goes back to give Iroh a gift his son gave him, and then playing as Iroh chose to leave with Zuko on his hunt for the avatar was peak and so well used. Left me nice and teared up.
Peach popcorn sounds kinda good tho
these ads are everything! enjoying my popcorn as we speak!
Jay: "Do you think you could kick so hard that a lock would break?"
McNally: "Yes, yes I do."
Jett with the “if you’re not with me, then you’re my enemy” moment.
honestly my favorite tiny detail in this episode was Bumi's pure white tufts of armpit hair lmao. I loved that touch.
Leaves from the vine, ugh, made me cry twice
Two out of two ... handfuls of rock candy? Really, Jay? TWO TWISTERS WERE. RIGHT. THERE. 26:58
Pay attention to music cues in the background
The only thing louder than the crash was the Cabbage Merchant's cry of disbelief that even more of his cabbages was destroyed.
SECRET TUNNEL!!...SECRET TUNNEL!! Hey I just remembered the rest of that song. And die!!
I was new to the franchise, but it was pretty obvious to me how Zuko got the scar. I still appreciated the order that they had all of the flashback reveals.
Was that leaves on the vine playing in the funeral flashback? Oh my heart
I liked the video just because of the ad xD These are great. Love you guys.
Ok, these ads are getting more fun 🤣
I ordered about ten bags of popcorn a couple of days ago and if they make a peaches version, count me in on some more. lol
This episode lifted my heart with Secret Tunnel, then smashed my heart and stomped on it with a handful of cords in the funeral
If it wasn't $149 to deliver popcorn to here in Alberta, Canada, I would be totally pulling the trigger on some. I'm actually impressed that they are willing to deliver here lol.
3:04 to just get right to the content, no ad at all, but you should really go back and watch it!
😉🍑❤️
Peach Milk Chocolate, or Spicey Peach dark chocolate would be Awesome. I’m still pulling for Ghost Pepper Powder Pop’n’corn, cuz I like to breathe fire while I snack lol. These adds are hilarious.
Oh I second spicy peach dark chocolate!
I was so impressed with the actor playing Iroh this episode. Especially in that 'Look how silly I am, I'm definitely not crying' moment towards the end. Bc in the cartoon you kinda had to infer from context that Iroh was being intentionally lighthearted and goofy in the beginning, in order to be a safe presence for his (recently traumatised) nephew. And you only really get that context a good bit later when you've already seen more of his serious side and the overblown silliness has faded into just his regular sense of humor.
But here you can just _see_ it plain as day on his face. He's hurting just as much as Zuko inside. Both over Lu Ten's fate and over Zuko's pain. And he's trying so hard to put that to the side and be what Zuko needs in that moment. Safe and there for him.
Jay your a genious peaky bugger i realy liked the add you invented without informing the participants genious and very effective as i was not interrested in Navs popcorn but being included in the business i am all in now!!!
i have A LOT of issues with story arcs and choices in this live action remake, but non of them are with hiro and zukos storyline. they did an amazing job with that
Thought you were going to say they needed badger milk like Rob Schneider 😂
18:00 In this case, it's two moms and their love story. 😊
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow…
Did you guys notice in the flash back scene, the background music was leaves from the vine?
When I tell you I lost it when I heard Tears from the Vine, I effing LOST. IT.
It's okay Jay my daughter is 10 and I still call her my little baby...I can still see when she used to be so small that she fit inside the crook of my arm ❤
Not me singing my heart out to Secret Tunnel. That earth bender captain’s acting was so good. Really makes you feel for what he went through. I also like that while Iroh is still his tea ans food loving wisdom dispensing self, he’s also more hard edged than in animation. You get a better idea of how the events of hia days as a general shaped him and continue to haunt him to this day. He alsi is a bit tougher on Zuko than his animated counterpart.
I'm 100% sure these ads are in fact planned, but that doesn't make them any less fun. I'm NordVerse levels of invested in this ad saga now😂
Love how much y'all are loving this, especially this episode! Seeing so many negative reactions among my friend group and from other reactors had me thinking i was going mad! Which i very well might still be (there ARE other symptoms... 😜), and Lord knows I've loved plenty of things other people hate (yourselves included), but man is it great to feel the love up in here like a badgermole! 💜
Soon as i heard leaves from the vine......i had to turn the episode off.......I first heard it in the original the day after my granddad died who raised me like a son.....I hadnt thought about him in afew years now and just hearing those notes it just smacked me back to being a kid and feeling so lost I'm a father myself now and it just hits diffrent now.......
Just like that there goes Katara and Aangs first moment down the drain
👋🏽😃
I did not watch the animated series. But this beautifully told tale.
Just finished the season, but this episode is my favorite! ❤
The opening was so cute... Just a like for that 🥰
Jay is a menace.
Now I'm kinda wishing we got more of Lu Ten in both this and the original.
Everybody gangster until Leaves From the Vine comes on….
Feelings = Force Power
Badger Mole = Jedi ? 😂
Leaves on the vine...... 😔 crying😭
How many people have died from being squashed from Flying Bison poop falling from 200 ft up
Iroh and Zuko are the whole show for me, man. To a much lesser extent, Azula is too, but man I cannot possibly stress enough how little I care for or enjoy basically anything else in this show.
I mean, little stuff like the cabbage guy and the hippie singers, of course that’s great. But those are little things, really
Did you guys recognize that Bumi was Bor'Dor Dog'Son?
I wanted Flopsie...
only a sith deals in absolutes. 11:03.
Clearly, Bumi is a Rock Star
I think the secret ads are Jay's payback for all the KFC surprises and poor Bryan just got caught in the cross hairs.
NAVS!
13:47 I am more like Adam here, sure, Jay is right, it's awesome to see, but these guys we meet in book 2 on our way back to Omashu, I've come far enough that I will reserve my judgement later, but I demand an explanation as to why they decided to bring this story into season one, and have Sokka and Katara be the ones traversing the tunnels, rather than Aang and Katara...
I am not sure about this episode, all the pieces are executed perfectly.
The acting of Iroh in all the emotional scenes are spot on, BUT this is again like secret tunnel earlier in the episode something they've brought up in the timeline, revealed much earlier than the animation did, so I am still wondering: Why? if it's just "we were afraid we wouldn't be able to get to it", the I resent them doing it, if we later on get an overview of the full story (in what 3-4 years when it's all said and done?) and can se a clear reason and it makes sense, then I can be calm about it. I will have to stay reserved until then.
Okay, okay.. if that intro is true.... Jay gets 1000 exp on rogue or bard.
Im fully expecting Haru in book season 2
I’m still hoping for peaches and cream or peach cobbler flavors!!
Yeah even though I came away from the Bumi stuff a little disappointed due to the og being my favourite, and while I do think the test stuff leading up to the fight could have been better, I do love the bison whistle change of being from him rather than bought randomly at a market. I also like what he was trying to tell Aang, it will be interesting seeing how they reconcile what happens with Bumi later with this version though.
SECRET AD! SECRET AD! OVER VID CALL! SECRET SECRET SECRET SECRET AD!
