  • Dirty mode encoder switches are a common problem on Funai made VCRs with these chassis from 2001 - 2016. These mechanisms can be found in these stand alone VCRs under many names such as Funai, Symphonic, Sylvania, Emerson, Magnavox, Sanyo, Hitachi, etc. This video will show you how to fix tape eating issues in your Funai made VCR from that era.

Thank you! I bought a Pokemon VCR for $50 because it wasn't working. Kept eating tapes. Your video helped me fix it and now it's good as new!

Yes I can. It has the same mechanism but the chassis can just lift off because it's not soldered down.

Bought an old VCR from a thrift store today. When I put a VHS in, the VCR makes a loud squeaking sound then says error and won’t play the tape. Any advice on how to fix that?

Hey, does anyone know how to fix a Panasonic nv-sd220? It had a mode switch probkem, so I opened and cleaned it. Of course ä, I also checked the timing marks before closing, so that's fine.
But I was dumb. When I put the face plate back on, I didn't remember to hold the lid open. And when I put a tape in, I heard the most ominous click of all time. Everything worked fine, until I *tried* to eject the tape. It unloaded and tried to push the tape out, but the lind wouldn't open. How lovely. I had to unplug and plug it back in to get the error message to go away. With my finger I helped the lid open and it worked.
I lifted out the whole mechanism, just to access the little tiny spring I slipped from its intended place. I got it back to where it's supposed to be in, but now the lid won't close (lol) so can anyone help?

I've almost never had any problems with the door mechanism so unfortunately, I do not know how to fix that issue.

I have a Sylvania 2003/2004 SSD803 DVD/VCR Combo that eats tapes but it eventually works. But the symptoms come back after leaving it for a few hours. I kinda want to clean the switch but can i use rubbing alcohol or something because we do not have that de oxit stuff. I kinda don't want to at the same time because i don't want to break stuff either.

      Rubbing alcohol would also work.

Nice information :) Do you happen to know what fault code "2" means? Sometimes my Philips, which seems to have Funai mechanism, stops itself and starts flashing the number two at the display. It restarts though immediatly from the power switch or remote control and works normally after that, so can't be anything too serious :D
