Have you ever experienced this kind of situation before? Comment below!
I had a situation once at a anime convention where I tried to buy a real sword but the vender insulted me because he thought I go around and try to assault people. He pressured me into buying a fake one. I bought it but rarely use it.
That seller deserves a whole episode on @steviefreakinc 's channel!
It felt like he was a UK shop owner to be honest in the UK if the price is labelled people ain't getting a discount from haggling. The haggling customer may even be viewed as the bad guy in the scenario why I rarely shop in person :/ Sorry you had a terrible experience 😢
Definitely had this happen a couple times. Vendors sometimes act like just because you ask to see an item you are already agreeing to buy it. If this guy kept pushing me like he did you, I would have just told him market price is about $100 and that's what I am looking to pay. He was way too aggressive knocking the price down repeatedly after you said you were passing on it. I find it best to move on from those people to find somewhere else to spend my money.
I had the same problem. He didn’t want me to see any games. He just gave me the price and said, “Are you going to buy it or not?”
I had an identical experience with that vendor. I’ve been to 3 conventions he’s been at since I help a buddy of mine run a booth. I was interested in an NES Deluxe set he had, box was clean, but of course before committing to purchasing I wanted to check out the insides. Well it wasn’t fully complete with all the parts, games didn’t have their boxes, etc so I told him I’d have to pass. (He had it marked a few hundred above sold comps) and he wouldn’t leave me alone about it and made me feel like I was somehow the bad guy for backing out, when I was never committed to begin with. Then he comes up to our booth and offers 60% price charting on all our high end games, we tell him no, then he acts like he does us a favor by saying “yeah I won’t buy these I’ll let you make more money by selling them during the event.” Like yeah that wasn’t your choice buddy 😂 he’s unbelievable
The first minute of the video the guys with the Barbie control stuff are the homies from retro respawn they are amazing people and very friendly glad to see you met them 🙏
"I will do $130"
me: "Cool, I will save $10 and buy it from another vendor..."
Lol
Very nice of you to say you appreciate his offer and it's a nice deal.
I would've just told him "dude, I just said another booth got it for 120, why would I pay 130".
Lol
I had an experience like that at the retro game expo last year & a sega Saturn game I wanted to get was like $500. I ended up just finding it on eBay for around $300 lol
I absolutely hate the greedy resellers, really are the plague of our hobby. Walking away was the right call. We cant encourage them to continue to rip people off.
You are delusional. They are literally in a convention centre full of resellers.
Yep. They are there to make money.... don't like the price??? Just walk away and look for another reseller that'll take your lower asking price. Easy. This couple looks soft and fragile, lol.
Nick had the best metaphor. It is a dance when you haggle. Most of the time it's a junior high dance however. Personally, I just don't find it worth it half the time. But he nailed it. Vendor just looking to make a sale on Sunday.
I'm a small local seller who does local meetups and shows to sell some of my video games and you can tell very quickly who is there to sell and enjoy themselves meeting new people and who's there just to make a quick buck. He was clearly only there for money and nothing else.
I personally love talking to people when they look at the games and other stuff I have for sale because it makes the time go quickly while we are both having fun talking about the stuff we love! Hell, I've made so many friends from my local monthly meetup just from my selling and it's something I'll always enjoy!
I'm also the type of person where if I find out someone else has a better price than me, I will always push for them to get theirs over mine if the condition is nicer or its too good to pass up! We are a community at the end of the day and I want people to get the most out of their money, especially with everything getting more and more pricey in 2024.
The saddest part about this is that you don't even have to show the vendors face, I know this vendor, I recognize the stuff they're selling. I've run into them several times in the past and their prices are soo ridiculous its stupid. They've got a couple of the N64 controllers I need to complete my set, one was double the pc price, the other $100 over pc. They also sold a buddy of mine a broken gba for $70, which was the negotiated price. He almost quit retro after that. At this point I just go to their booth to mock them.
Had to help my family out when they encountered them. He was a dick to them and it was their first year buying retro. Overall wish I never see him selling ever again
I think the worse experience I have had with a convention seller was with artwork at anime expo in Los Angeles. I found some really cool looking sheet metal pieces. I saw one with the full evolution line for the polemon bulbasaur which I really likes and when I asked for it the vendor laughed in my face and asked me if I was serious. When I confirmed that it was what I wanted they went pale and instead of apologizing they tried to convince they weren't making fun of me. I was young and really wanted it so I bought it anyways but realistically I should've walked away. Especially since I moved not long after and it got ruined in transit anyways. Was such a waste.
😞
I'm just an OG collector with no resale interest and those type of people really burn me up 🤬.
Same here brother 🙏 resellers make me sick
Bruh, how are you gonna buy any old games without resellers?!?
@@logieoliee8812he said those type of resellers
OMG that's the same guy that tried to sell me a DBZ attack of the saiyans that wouldn't get detected on my 3ds and he said "just take it and use isopropyl alcohol and it will work" he had it for $100 but then lowered it to $80 like bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
🫣
Wowwwweee. I had to I had to do it for my wife that's my wife
@@seanthegamer5552did you have a stroke?
As someone who used to work in a mom and pop game shop you can't be to pushy my boss used to offer deals to people if you were buy lots of games but if the customer didn't want it you don't be pushy because that can damage the business reputation of the store by seeing like we only care about sales , a lot of people came back because we had talked to them about games before buying them or gave recommendations based on what they were purchasing. If they didn't want to converse that was fine too. But me and my bosses were just a bunch of nerds who liked video games. So we tried to be as relatable as we could so people would be comfortable buying from us
Yeah been so pushy it’s a huge no for me even if is a good deal I would walk away just because I get awkward and make it uncomfortable.
Agreed 🙂
Experienced something similar at MWGC. I was looking for the price on a Breath of Fire III and he tells me 130 and I was clearly disappointed but politely told him "okay that's more than I can spend at this time, thanks." He then offered $120 and I told him I appreciate it but I didn't have to cash for it. Well I take card he says and then he says you know some people don't know what that game is worth these days." I got angry at this point and said no thanks and walked away. I know the game is worth about half that! Everyone else does too and that's why he went home with it. I don't like telling small business people how to run things but don't insult my intelligence.
One thing I notice about the vendor and the booth is that the boxes were completely full. I can only imagine that they didn't sell that much at that Expo. I think you said that this was the second or third day too. I also found it strange that every DS game was in a bag as well but not the Wii U games. I'm glad you stuck to your guns and did not give into the purchase. Like the store manager said, that vendor was all about the $$$$$. I have never sold at an Expo but I have done some local swaps. I usually have my prices under market value and then give discounts if people buy multiple games. Being friendly and open and honest helps in every transaction.
as the kids say "he did not pass the vibe check". 100% agree that haggling is a dance and you gotta know when the other person isnt feeling it. i walk away from those interactions every time
You did everything right were collectors and we want good deals . Everyone has there price but that doesn't mean we gotta pay that price
Thanks for saying so 🙂
There was a car sellsman, who went to get an aggressive manager. He wouldn't let me leave, I had my eyes on a Honda Accord in another dealership.
You guys are too nice. I would have said I’ll give you 90 take it or leave it and walk away even if he still talking. lol but I’m a savage 😂
14:34 No, You had it right first time around. You are running out of room! It's a constraint! 😂
Haha both are true!
Not happened to me in terms of video games. But I had a salesman at a car dealership try to block the door one time because I was walking away from an offer.
I literally have Dino Riders VHS #1 in my player right now. Freaking love that one.
The best part of the Dino Riders VHS is the Tyco advertisements for the Dino Riders toys.
Yes!!
I have experienced something similar to this before. This guy clearly just wanted the money and didn't care about anything else. He's a businessman, and I get that, but there is no reason really to be so aggressive. In my case, I ended up just walking away after politely turning down the sale and the guy even followed me for a bit dropping the price by $1 every 30 seconds or so. I literally had to turn around and just tell him I am not buying from him on principle at that point.
WAH! Just found True Lies at my local pawn shop and was STOKED to pick it up. Absolutely would have done the same and walked away from that dude. Sellers can ask however much they want for their items: if a little haggling doesn't work out, I walk away! :D. Great video as always!
Dude is probably a used car salesman outside of expos. When people get pushy I just walk, no need to give him my time
There's a saying about gamehunting at conventions: "The first day is quality, the last day is quantity." It's a gamble: if there's something you want, do you buy it right away at a higher price, or try waiting until the last day when you can probably negotiate for a lower price, but at the risk that someone else might buy it on a earlier day? But with guys like that, their stock wont shrink much. And that's on him.
I learned from working at a pawn shop in college that when the price is high enough that you already know they won't be able to meet your price then just politely tell them you're not interested, which I think you did. If they continue to pressure you then just tell them you are looking for it for much cheaper and wouldn't want to offend them with the offer. At that point some people still want to know so just tell them how much you're wanting to get it for. Usually they just laugh and you give them the courtesy laugh of, "see, told ya." Some people will still get upset, and honestly just knowing that you can only control your own actions is the best view point to have. You have no obligation to purchase from someone and shouldn't feel bad because of someone else's actions. Sometimes they can surprise you and accept your offer.
Sorry you guys had to deal with that, great video as always!!
I've never been to an expo, but I've had some experience in dealing with video game vendors.
Sometimes you can't pick the personality of who the vendor is.
All you can do is decide if you wish to negotiate, then figure out what is best for you in the end.
Buy it now...or just wait . That's all you can do in the end guys.
Thanks again for the video.
Love the content. Would you guys ever talk about what it’s like to go to these cons. Like is it crazy busy around town. Do you go early and wait in lines or later. Essentially the what it’s like at a con and what realistically it looks like to go.
Thanks for watching! We'll have to mention some of those items when we come across them during a future con 😀
I think there are times where you have to walk away immediately if the price is too high. If there’s a high value title, know what the value is before you get a chance to look at it and if it’s too high just cut the cord immediately that you don’t want it. If it’s a $100 game and you’re seeing a $150 price tag there’s literally no reason to start any negotiation as the seller is more than likely too far in price to care about dropping it that much lower. I’ve never, in the past however many years of collecting, been able to convince any seller to drop their price to price charting levels if they’re already asking 30-40%+ what price charting has a game listed at, it’s a losing battle no matter what.
Very good point. We definitely wanted to walk away, but he had a lot of great stuff for sale and we already bought from him. It's a shame it had to get to this point 😞
Tbf, price charting isn't exactly accurate. It's a decent tool but no where near the end all be all of determining market value.
I completely agree. When I come across a booth and I see items way above market value (happens at every convention, don't know how these people make money), I immediately skip the whole thing. But I understand it might be different if you are really are set on getting a rare item.
Growlancer is so cool, bought the collection when it first came out. back then all the extras game disks, artbook, watch, cards, and other stuff that came with it, only $80. gaming back then was so much cooler
I was so happy to see you guys freak out at the Dino Riders VHS, and it's even volume 1. Definitely one of my grail VHS goals and to this day I don't know how that series wasn't wildly successful.
We were so stoked to find it! 😀
I've had a few instances like that at Comic conventions and Card cons, pretty much i am polite but i just walk away usually. I do not care of aggressive selling no matter where it is at, which is why even though I do it, i have trouble working in retail in general , companies always want you to do borderline shady tactics to sell their material.
Real talk - True Lies is a suuuuuuuuper fun game on SNES
It looks fun!
I agree with Mort on this one. Awesome game. Rented it as a kid and got it at a couple years ago locally.
I think we all have had bad interactions in retail at times. At times you can get a deal on some things and at times you won't. What amazes me is ..if that clip was on the Sunday (and end of Con) usually guys are pushing to make as much sales as possible. As one shop owner friend told me , "I wanna get rid as much stuff since i gotta load it all back up..." lol.
He wanted $150 for that game cause he probably "Invested" $120 into it for a quick flip
Pretty sure that's the same booth that looked at me like an idiot when I asked for a bundle offer for a few NES games. He wouldn't budge on a Saturday and then tried to throw a deal on the third at me after I bought the two I actually wanted. Everyone else was awesome.
Yo, great video, y'all aren't wrong about aggressive resellers, and it's always great to see the peeps from one-up games 🤟😎🤙
So when you go to SoCal in June, does that mean we're going to get a month full of videos for that expo as well!? You guys really did an exceptional job creating all that content in a weekend.
And that Dr Mario match was off the chart! But it made me play a whole lot more now these days.
Man we try to lol, it's tough to do!
2:46 womp womp
I had a similar experience with that guy but ultimately did buy from him b/c he was the only vendor with the games I wanted. I stood firm on what I was willing to pay though, and he eventually accepted, so maybe I caught him on an off day.
As a Canadian that was too nice with you both with that vendor. Most of us would had said you lost a sale and passed the word along.
Just want to clear things up...y'all are amazing be safe and take care love your videos
Omg that’s the owner of 1 up games out here in Mesa! I’ve met that dude before he’s super genuine! Love that store, man I gotta go back!
They are great!
True lies on SNES was one of my favorite games as a kid. I got it for Christmas and I remember it was hard but I learned every single level and beat it. Such a fun memory!
That's awesome, such a fun game 😀
Dino Riders VHS 🎉🎉🎉
Dino riders was a awesome cartoon. I enjoy your videos.
@@Khaot1x thx dude 🙏
I came across this guy during the convention. He kept talking to me about how he’s tired of people not buying “sh**” and wasting his time when they politely decline. Probably because his stuff was way over price charting prices. Dude made my family uncomfortable and I had to help them back out of convos with him because he kept trying to aggressively get them to buy an item from guilt. He was a straight up a hole.
i've never experienced the hard sell as a buyer outside of a car dealership, but i've encountered resellers as a collector who tried to lowball me for my sega collection because nintendo games are more popular.
I have really bad social anxiety so when I've been pressured like that in the past I could never go back.
What do you guys use to resurface your disks? And would you recommend it for others? Thanks!
We have an Eco Auto Smart, it's fantastic! But it's very expensive...
Nice channel loving the videos
Thanks so much for watching 😀
Getbackers was awesome. Watched It when I was in high school back in 2006
Dude: 150.
Me: Nope. I'm off.
Awesome video my friends, please keep up the excellent content and work😊. Also please just get the burnout 3 resurfaced. That is one of my all time favorite games ever. Peace and Blessings always my friends.
We do have a great resurfacer, but we want better cover art and the missing manual lol. It's one of my favorite arcade racers of ALL TIME 😀
With that vendor I would have just said thank you after about the second counter of only taking $5 off and walked away never to do business with them again. The people I do business with understand to treat customers with respect. There was none there.
No and I would of walked away and give him the bird
When i had true lies in the box 10 yrs ago i couldnt give it away man times change
I would just walk away and say no thanks. Great video, you had me when you said you still feel icky.
😅
the saddest part I always put the price at the lowest I can go so when I sell anything
That growlanser game was a sweet deal I will have to look for it now thanks!
I've seen a video with that Nick guy recently that was pretty good. I believe it was about Phoenix Resale being a harm to gaming so of course I liked it lol
Yeah he was shitting on Caleb for doing all those videos on why it’s bad to own a game store now
All these resellers are harmful to rjese cheap games haha
All my homies hate phoenix resale 🤝
Everyone you buy from is a reseller. If you don’t want to pay for it don’t buy it. 😂
How do we destroy Phoenix Reseller reputation and business?
Lots of cool stuff , seeing all the mega man in the boxes , I have all mine , but no boxes but I have the manuals and papers. It's annoying when you try to leave and someone keeps trying to get you to buy. I was at a comic book show , a guy had the book I wanted. But when I was waiting to pay , a buddy of his came up and he wrote the phone number on a piece of paper on top of the comic I wanted. It was in a bag , but it impressed into the comic. I told him I didn't want it , and he kept trying to get me to pay for something he ruined, which is what I told him.
Ouch, that's a bummer 😞
OMG I have that JRPG cart and box only no instructions but I bought it for only 60.00 that guy was SUPER MEANIE sorry you guys had to go through that…. The game is o…k… your not missing much, however if you like wizard of OZ you should find it eventually for your collection! Good luck hunting!
Usually if i see some things that are overpriced like that i just avoid all together. No conflict, no issue, just avoids the whole situation all together.
I want me and my wife to go to a gaming expo
You should! They are a blast 😀
That seller sucked tbh. He’s just got no passion for what he does. How does he not realize he’s being weird and making it weird for you guys. I was at a card expo a little while ago & I found a booth that had WWE autograph photos & I asked for a Jeff hardy auto, & he pulls out 2-3 different ones but they were all from more modern photos, just stuff that didn’t connect with me. I wanted to find something from the early 2000s for that nostalgia! & I let him know how I was feeling & he goes “don’t even worry man, I totally understand, I want you to leave with something you’re genuinely happy with bc the sale means nothing to me” & he didn’t even try to give a better price on the photos he had. That was the type of interaction I walked away from and was happy. More people need to be like that. These sellers need to understand they’re part of a “niche” hobby & reputation is everything. Can’t be a pushy sour salesman.
VHS is one of those formats I grew up with and despite that I have no nostalgia for it. Bad quality picture, fragile tapes and the machines that ate them, and rewinding. The only fond memories related to VHS was trips to the rental store on the weekends.
I can respect that for sure. A lot of the nostalgia comes from Blockbuster lol
I’m 19 but I grew up with VHS cause my family had a bunch. I also found them really annoying.
I would have also walked away, maybe even earlier. When there’s that big difference with the price between sellers, that’s a no brainer.
Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad is actually pretty great as far as Power Ranger style shows go!
I would have told that particular seller to go away and leave. I'd probably be mean about it to. Was to a giant retromarket this weekend, the sellers there was all wonderful and I spent far to much money. Went to one seller and we got talking and somehow I got a thirty percent discount on games that were already sold under market value, I didn't even ask for a discount. He just gave it to me because we had a good conversation.
Do you have a link for the company that makes the pins at the 2 min mark?
We don't, sorry! We need to get better at keeping that info 😕
@@JRPGLife all good no worries. Lots of things to see at shows so hard to get info for everything.
Awesome video guy & lady 😎!
Everyone’s different & this seller is no exception & sometimes it’s good to see to your minds eye what bad is so you can appreciate the good, the best way to deal with hard sellers is to offer a low ball offer the Wizard of oZ for example say you offer him $75 then it would probably be a firm no & you get to walk away, or he says yes & you get a great deal.
I'm the kind of petty jerk I would walked back by the pushy seller and pulled out the Wizard of Oz and said "$110".
😳
I definitely would have walked away from the Wizard of Oz game. First it was overpriced, second the aggressiveness was unnecessary
Im glad i stopped collecting the prices are outrageous nowadays
I would have made it awkward by directly saying to the seller was trying to strongarm me into paying too much money for a game and ended the conversation. People like him need to be put in their place.
I had a similar experience with the same vendor at the game on expo. Made me not want to buy from him as well
Man Dawn of Mana was such a let down when i played it and gave up before the final boss. Nice score on Boktai 2 thats one i never see in the seattle area, so its kinda nice to see in your video. Btw i finally got my biggest 3ds grail game (thats not expensive)
Nice! Which one?
@@JRPGLife Tales of the Abyss, which I already own on ps2
I cannot stand those types of people who tries to force you into buying something thats a little overpriced & honestly i would walk away.. one time actually tried to buy a one gamecube game from a fb marketplace & it was a copy of the legend of zelda”windwaker”(cib) and this guy listed it way overpriced about $120 bucks.. and i even told him that i can go on ebay or a retro gamestore for a way better price for that copy which usually that copy runs around $77 & dude just got so mad and acted like i dont know nothing about any retro video games.. which usually i always look up prices before i buy it.. and he even tried to convince me to buy it from him im like nahh im good fam.. any retro gamers out there! Stay safe! Which at the end of the day.. there’s just wayy better deals just gotta find them! Goodluck👍🏽
Get Backers is an awesome anime. Chibi Ginji Amano lol. Tekken the motion picture is AMAZING... The intro, music, and ripping off dinosaur jaws lol
so glad you clipped from Nicks recent video.. Might get flack for it.. However Im a reseller and I think he approached this with grace and should cause people to think
This wasn't from his recent video, this was a conversation we had and recorded privately. 🙂
@@JRPGLife ahhhhh well either way good stuff! I feel he said some of the same things though lol
I think you guys did the right thing. I would have been very uncomfortable around that seller
3:10 when the guy wanteds to do ot but the girl said no we are not buying another 1 kinda look :p
What's the ham doing in the game room at 16:00? LOL
😉
There's always people like him aggressively trying to sell their overpriced items in the collector's world--be it retro games, comics, toys, etc...
But just remember that they need you more than you need them. Which is why they're so aggressive in their tactics and probably also hasn't sold much either (gee, I wonder why...). They def like to take advantage of people who are trying to be nice as if it's a sign of weakness. Nicely done getting away and bringing this up for discussion. 👏 As you can see in the comments, this is all too relatable.
As someone that works in a job where we can upsell and has experience in a straight up sales position, I would’ve given him a hard no. Very direct and very stern “No, not interested”. He sounds like one of those bad pushy salesmen that has no finesse or tact.
Unfortunately there are just alot of game store owners and resellers in general that are just like that. They don't play video games really they only see it as money. I really don't like that at all. Like ok if you are only in it for the money at least work with your customers. I'm a reseller I resell everything and I do resell video games. I get the dance you should be able to negotiate. Also I don't think most people really understand that just because on ebay it says the game is 145 plus a $5 shipping that means it's worth $150. Remember there are fees and shipping that should be taken consideration that "150" game is really actually worth "125" that's why going lower on some of the games just means they are removing the fees and pricing at what it costs not really saving money. Idk I would feel the same way but you guys were respectful and did exactly what I would have done. I would show the dude the prices or say what I'm seeing for that game but that does tend to get people all mad. Like so are you saying I'm not pricing things right? At that point it's best to walk away I'm sure you guys will find it again
Some people just have no interest in engaging people. That guy wanted to harass/feel powerful more than he wanted to make a deal. It's sad some people act like that.
i know and understand the collectable aspect of some of these items, but hot damn some of the prices are wtf. Im always asking.. how the heck do people afford all of these and its not the only thing they get. Either way some cool finds.
Asking “do you a have little wiggle room” implies you are interested at 10% - 15% below asking price. Just say, “I’d be interested at $100.”
Love the cool stuff but way out of my price range. This game prices are really getting crazy
Yeah, they just keep climbing 😀
I would have told that vendor "No thanks" and walked off. No explanation needed. I dont have time for people like that, he didnt deserve an explanation from you.
I'm glad you got Beyond the Yellow Brick Road. That game is super weird.
True. I guess if nobody buys it he will be forced to sell for less. Idk I’m not a high roller. I can’t afford games at retail lol😂
I buy games and stuff and the only time I sell is if I REALLY need to. Otherwise, re-selling is a no go for me. I would rather wait on a deal using both price charting and ebay to find an average between both cause price charting doesn't always have up to daye information or mixes it between loose or a different language game in the CIB filter and marks it wrong.
That guy was a total douchebag and had horrible negotiating skills! I once at a local flea market had a guy throw the game I was asking how much it was towards me down the table in his booth. Instantly walked away because it could've hit me. Wild times!
Best part of the video: seeing Reggie! Love him.
He's the best!
I could understand someone paying maybe $50 U.S. for a sealed Final Fantasy anime OVA VHS tape but $300? I haven't seen it since some point in the mid-1990s at an anime club at Université de Montréal but I remember it being very mediocre.
Mediocre is being generous 😅
