- Hi there! Since I've been learning to play the violin for a little over 1 year now, I wanted to talk about my experience with it!
Let me know your experiences and thoughts!
Enjoy! 💗

I can also give a few comments about my journey of learning the violin, which is related to what you are saying.
I could already read sheet music because I had music theory throughout my school education but could not really play an instrument.
Then I started to learn the violin in my mid 30s and practiced about 1-4 hours a day, 6 days a week without exception, in average I'd say 2 hours per day.
I needed that time because when you typically set everything up for practice and do a warm up, it costs around 45 min until you are warmed up and ready for the piece you are currently learning. Before that my fingers weren't warmed up enough to be as agile as I needed them. This could be different when you're younger, I don't know.
I always had a plan for exercises for different techniques, like martelé, spiccato, ricochet, collé, etc. Then the arpeggios and scales of the current piece I'm learning. Always etudes after that, typically Wohlfahrt and then finally the piece I'm currently learning. So 2 hours was pretty tight.
I had a relatively bad teacher (which I didn't knew at that time) and played in total for 2-3 years.
I was able to play at a concert (with all the students of my teacher) the piece "Infant Paganini" with accompany pretty well.
However, I'm telling that because after that concert I put my violin down and didn't touch it for 6 years. I was absolutely burned out from practicing after around 3 years. I couldn't see the violin anymore and didn't have fun practicing at all. However, I played pretty well but I didn't care.
So I would agree to a certain degree with you that you need to a least be a little careful with your motivation. It can kill off when you have to little progress or practice becomes a torture. I guess, that everyone has to find the right balance.
However, I have started to practice a few days a week again but max 1 hour. I can now also practice more efficiently than before, when I tried to to squeeze every minute out of my practice. I think adult students should much more focus on the fun part, because we can't hide it, playing violin very well can be a very hard and painful experience. 😂 You have to find realistic goals. However, I still think that it is completely normal not to have fun all the time, when you learn something very very difficult. Playing violin is a veeeeery acquired taste 😂
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your thoughts!!
I understand, I mean you put a LOT of time and effort into playing plus having a bad teacher didn't help, which is another important aspect. It was an experience for sure that you were able to learn from.
I'm glad you picked it up again! Hopefully you'll continue playing and maybe even perfom again, if that's on your list, of course! ☺
im 28, I paly the guitar, your video is very relatable I feel very similar to what you describe
😄good luck!
You probably don't know this with your finger placement..??.. But, you most likely don't need to have your tape placement anylonger.. Try it out.. Don't judge yourself and start to find other's to play along with.. That'll make you feel where you're at and work on your own improvement.. I'm very proud of your dedication 👏..
Yes my teacher told me to take them off, also because they slid... let's see how it goes! ahah I would love to find other people to play and practice with! Thank you!!
