Because I hate myself, I'm trying to learn the song title and artist for all of the top hits of the 1970s now for music trivia. I can confirm that the 1970s is the most min/max decade of the last 70 years, with an unbelievable amount of the worst songs you've ever heard.
Then when you're about to give up on life, something like Simple Man comes on.

It is fascinating that after Miles Davis, you spoke about The Clash "London Calling". In my mid 20s I was OBSESSED with Miles Davis and was the only one in the group of punk rock friends that loved "Bitches Brew". You could easily do a list of 10s from every year of the 70's let alone the whole decade. The late 60s/early 70s in particular really seems like the high tide mark for music IMO. The Beatles, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Rolling stones, James Brown, Bowie, Floyd, Bob Dylan and countless others all peaking musically .

For me, I would’ve gone for Black Sabbath self titled, Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd (as memeable as it is to say, it just is perfect), Led Zeppelin IV, and as you pointed out, Marvin Gaye’s What Going On. I feel most strong about Floyd, Sabbath, and Deep Purple though, because they defined their genre’s sound with these albums. Deep Purple in particular for me I feel doesn’t get some of the love they deserve when they were equally as influential in popularizing metal as the Sabbath. The only reason I don’t pick out Machine Head or Burn is they’re more like 8-9/10s for me in terms of their overall quality. There’s a couple duds in there, even though the rest of the tracks changed my life and view in music. But In Rock for me is perfect. Flight of the Rat is absolutely quintessential rock n roll for me, Child in Time is like their Echoes except about Vietnam/war, Speed King is simply badass, I could go on. For being one of the founders of metal, they get slept on by a lot of rock fans imo. Their lineup changes over the years are so interesting, and each lineup you can tell something’s changed quite drastically. They’re so cool. Anyway, that’s my thoughts which delved into my love for Deep Purple

@@rockerbox2112 Are you kidding? There's no duds in Machine Head. It's perfect from beginning to end. Yes, Smoke on the Water gets overplayed but blame the radio stations for that. Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers is 100% a 10 out of 10. Since been named album of the century by Time magazine, contains the majority of the songs that were later put on his best of album (Legend) and also contains a balance of light and dark, hard and soft, fast and slow, and militant and rebel music like Exodus and The Heathen, love songs like Waiting in Vain and Turn Your Lights down Low. Up beat songs like Jamming, slow grooves like Natural Mystic, anthems like One Love and 3 little Birds and social commentary like Guiltiness. The album has everything and is a perfect introduction into Bob Marley and the Wailers and reggae in general.

@@guieming3018 I think Survival is also a 10 (so is Uprising, Kaya, Catch a Fire, Burnin, Rastaman Vibration etc.). I think all of his official albums were 10/10. But I think Exodus has the wider appeal. Survival is more for the reggae purist (like me) but doesn't have any mainstream hit songs. Whereas Exodus has most of his big hit songs and also had some harder roots style tracks too, so had a good mix for a wider audience. But Survival is a top album and more for those of us who were more deeper into his music, his message and reggae in general. If I was introducing someone to Bob Marley for the first time I'd play them the Exodus album first, then I'd play the Survival album when they wanted to dive deeper into his music.
