Oh my, Queen Wilhelmina was quite spirited compared to the traditional expectation that a monarch in public be so reserved! I feel like I'm hearing a beloved grandmother announcing something happy, and not exactly a sovereign abdicating.
I know that presently, Queen Margarethe II is just as lively and jovial.
Minor correction: It was Princess Wilhelmina speaking and cheering at that point.

@@GabrielTorres-rq5bl Correct, but that is only after death. Between abdication and death they use the title of prince/princess and are addressed and referred to as such.

The Netherlands has had reigning Queens for so long - Queen Emma, Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix - that it seems strange that they now have a King.
It's unusual, certainly, but His Majesty the King will be succeeded someday by his daughter, the Princess of Orange, at which point we will be back to our tradition of reigning Queens ;-)
Well technically Emma was a Queen Consort then a Regent , she wasn't a reigning Queen
But it has to be said they are 4 generations of formidable women in different ways
We miss the traditional of having a guy called Willem ruling us.

Then, of course, you kindly lent us a William, William of Orange, who reigned jointly with Queen Mary II as William III. Our latest William died in 1837. We shall have once again, of course, before too long.

She was the worst royal who we ever had, she fled her country out of war and didnt even inform her people. Only her husband stayed and fought the germans

Well Queen Wilhelmina did lead her country from two world wars.
Juliana wasn’t like her mother - she was more shy and not as imperial.
I love how theatrical Queen Wilhelmina was here though. I guess everyone is different.

@@DwiMountain Yes, Queen Juliana signed her goodbye as Queen to Indonesia. She later visited the newly Republic of Indonesia in one of the first State Visits. It was a great success.

I wonder if the queen ever mentioned indonesia or so called nederlands indie? It's her biggest oversea colony and yet she never visit it nor even talk about it
the Netherlands monarchy are just the same as the British. they're constitutional, and they have little power to control the government as a whole. the Indonesian National Revolution are largely handled by the Netherlands government, and the crown have no right to intervene. She knew if she gonna talk about it, pro or against the revolution, it would cause an uproar between the people as they already divided about if they need to withdraw from Indonesia or mantain their rule.
Could any Dutch speakers please translate Wilhelmina's speech? I can more or less get parts of it but i am not a native speaker. Thanks :)

even though she was in charge when WWII ended, but the post WWII policy of recolonizing the lost Dutch colonies during WWII was a real disaster, both economically and militarily, Dutch military was bogged down in independent Indonesia in 1946-1949 and caused lots of human lives on both sides when they can't defeat Indonesian armed guerillas/militias.

Memang benar koningin Wilhelmina semasa hidupnya kekeuh tidak ingin Indonesia lepas dari pangkuan Nederlande. Sudah dua kali agresi belanda yang dipelopori oleh NICA dan KNIL mendapatkan restu dari Wilhelmina.
Karena dua organisasi bentukan belanda inilah, pemerintah kita kacau-balau, pindah sana-sini ke Jogja, pembantaian massal terjadi di Sulawesi karena ulah Westerling. Mereka juga ingkar janji, yang awal mula datangnya hanya untuk menangkap interniran jepang, rupanya berbuat onar dan ingin merebut kembali Indonesia.

@@davis7099 Her daughter Juliana gave birth in Ottawa but insisted that the hospital room be declared extraterritorial lest (gasp) a person who had no chance of inheriting and who did not be born on foreign soil. If I were Canada for such arrogant ingratitude I would have invited her to return to the Netherlands. Churchill offered the Kaiser asylum in 1940 but he declined.
