- "A lot of students find symbolic interactionism to be a confusing theory in sociology. When I first learned about it, I was confused too! Luckily, once you break it down it becomes a little easier to understand. Basically, sociologists use this theory to explain social behavior in terms of how people interact with each other through symbols. In other words, the way people communicate and act with other people is shaped by the meanings they give to different symbols. These symbols could be language, gestures, material things (ex. clothes), etc.- anything that has meaning for a culture or person. Symbols shape our basic interactions with each other based on the meanings we believe they have. For example, in the U.S. a thumbs up hand gesture is a sign of "good job", whereas in places like Greece and West Africa it is a very insulting gesture. Another example would be colors- the color red in China symbolizes good luck, while in the U.S. it often symbolizes danger. These symbols are a good example of the way context (the situation) affects our interactions with others and the symbols we use. Symbolic interactionism is a really cool theory in sociology that can be applied to all kinds of different situations in life to help us better understand the role symbols play in the way we socialize with each other."

About me: I have been a private tutor in a variety of subjects, from Geometry to Writing to SAT Prep, for about 6 years. I have experience teaching students of all learning styles and greatly enjoy helping students reach their full potential.
I'm from a small town in Pennsylvania. Outside of school, my two biggest interests are photography and horseback riding. I just recently transferred universities and am enjoying the transition so far. I'm double majoring in Marketing and Sociology and there isn't a subject I dislike (except maybe calculus!) so I love answering all kinds of questions.

This helped me a lot in understanding this theory a lot better!!
So the keyword in symbolic interactionism is symbol, something that represents something. Just like bed represents sleep.

JEGEDE Oluwaseun Oludele thank you very much. It was very helpful.
Thanks mam
thumbs up never means something negative or even an insult in Russia. But your thumb folded between your pointing and middle finger would mean something negative, not a direct insult, rather it means that "you will not get it from me" or ""you'll get nothing from me".. it is a kind of insulting way to say "no"
in Russia it also means "good job"!!!!
This explanation is little bit off the track of what Herbert Blumer meant by 'symbolic interactionism'. Components of symbolic interactionism is missing here...Human beings give 'meanings' to things or situations.... , meanings are derieved from the social interaction that takes place through 'language' and the meanings 'get changed' or modified or transformed with the change of the situations.
4:20 niceeeee
v.helpful btw
Because I am from Greece, I just want to say that the "thumbs up" doesn't symbolize any kind of insult and it means the exact same thing as in the US. You need to get your facts 100% straight before making any project like this.
Dimitra Kazazo she is right, google it, you will get to know.
Its just like a folkway in greece
this video is bad- too much misinformation. Please take this down.
