Confused. Was it Spencer of Durkheim that furthered the ideas of functionalism? You state Herbert Spencer compared functionalism to the human body, but then write "functionalist Emile Durkheim later compared society to the human body"?
Spencer came before Durkheim. Spencer originally made the analogy. Durkheim accepted the analogy and asked how such a society was possible. He found that it was because of a collective conscience (value consensus) - his concern was society being held together and i guess he used coined organic solidarity to explain it. idk tho
