My deep sympathy and condolences to anyone who thinks that this or any other gorgeous piece by Buxtehude, who has been underrated and almost ignored for far too long, is "repetitive" or "uninteresting'". I consider myself very fortunate to have lived long enough to discover how deep and profound his music really is.
The fact that Buxtehude, who must be considered as Bach's mentor, did not necessarily always use forms that were as complex as those of his pupil does not mean that Buxtehude's music lacks anything in the way of emotional power or beauty compared to Bach.
Even though some of Buxtehude's music, such as this incredibly beautiful, though short,,Allelulia, may be less complicated in terms of structure, that makes it even more memorable, in my opinion.

I wonder whether Buxtehude's choral music was any less harmonically complicated than any composed in the late 17th century. Few composers, before or after, can match Bach's harmonic complexity (while still maintaining intelligent composure), but Buxtehude's music is complex enough to reveal the heart of the pious regard of humans in a chorus, men and women together, resounding God's creative joy. Who can doubt that a young Bach was aware of this aspect of Buxtehude's venerable genius?

I think this Alleluia is defintetly Buxtehude's. It is part of the Cantata ' Der Herr ist mit mir' , BuxWV 15. This performance might be from Belgium. Conductor is Jos van Immerzeel and the vocalists are from the ' Collegium Vocale Gent'.
Very nice example of a baroque counterpoint composition. A certain J.S. Bach used this style to compose some well known pieces.

Of course mostly Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Haendel, Beethoven and a few others occupy a special place in the pantheon of classical music. In the field of religious Music let us not forget that Bach, Charpentier, Campra and others have been forgotten for centuries.......before beeing rediscovered........Mendelssohn rediscovered Bach's religious music and advertised it throughout Germany and Europe. he composed himself wonderful religious choral pieces, which is not well known in the large public who knows for sure his wonderful major Violin concerto .

Amazing how a repeated circle of descending fifths can sustain a whole baroque movement that is almost entirely devoid of counterpoint. This must have been Buxtehude at an early stage of his composing career, showing the immediate (and rather unprocessed) influence of the Italian style. Nice and pretty figurations, but the macro-structure is repetitive and uninteresting.

It, like some of Purcell's, etc. music, was built on a what is called a "ground bass" or "basso ostinato" (obstinate bass) - a repeating pattern of (usually) eight, or more, bass notes. (Bach uses this same compositional technique in his Passacaglias, as does Max Reger, etc.) It first gained popularity in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. It definitely works!

      @yadelorguedanslair6608 Před 4 lety +1

@@ivantomic8382 Sorry but Gresilde is right. Commercial music in 70' years has abused this process of composition ( repeated circle of descending fifths) and still abuses it today, sometimes in complete ignorance of its baroque origin. However, this piece is very beautiful, especially its interpretation.
