It's a wonder that bela's performance was not nominated for a best actor oscar because it is so timeless. The past nomination canadates are all but forgotten but not bela. Dracula is a landmark film because of bela.

I agree, but most people these days may not know that in those days, no horror or science fiction or fantasy film had the slightest chance of winning an Oscar in any of the major categories. No chance at all.

Fredric March won an Oscar for his performance in Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde in 1931, released the same year as Dracula and Frankenstein.
It was a brutal pre-code horror movie, and when March won the Oscar, it was one of the very few instances that any of the classic horror films were acknowledged
by the academy.

Dracula, at this point, was feeling pretty cocky. He already turned Renfield into his slave, killed an entire ship crew, killed Lucy (thus turning her into a vampire), and was in the process of transforming Mina into a vampire all the while making Renfield the scapegoat by using his obsession of eating bugs to throw everyone off his trail. And in this scene, in particular, Dracula is attempting to further spin his evil web of deceit and destruction by formally calling upon the Sewards and masterfully plays the part of a concerned neighbor in regard to Mina’s well-being. And as an added bonus, Dracula’s also liking the fact that Jonathan (Mina’s fiancé) is so obviously jealous of him and Mina being so friendly towards each other. “I can quite understand Mr. Harker’s concern.”
Up until this point, no human being had shown to be Dracula’s equal match. Until he met Van Helsing. As soon as Dracula entered the room Van Helsing looked him over with a look of instant suspicion. There’s just something about him that Van Helsing can’t help but distrust. When they’re introduced, Van Helsing plays it cool with a cordial bow as does Dracula. But immediately afterward, Dracula says “Van Helsing. A most distinguished scientist. Whose name we know even in the wilds of Transylvania.”
Van Helsing has obviously made a name for himself across Europe as a scientist, but maybe he’s also garnered attention in certain circles as an expert authority on monsters and supernatural occurrences. It was shown earlier in the film that Van Helsing immediately suspected that a vampire was behind Lucy’s death and later on Van Helsing is so confident in the existence of vampires that he showed no polite hesitation telling Harker and Seward this even though he knows they most likely won’t believe him since it is a case of life and death. In short, this isn’t Van Helsing’s first time dealing with bloodsuckers like Dracula. After all, he knows their strengths and weaknesses by heart. And even though he’s a short, elderly man he still feels confident enough in the knowledge and abilities he’s acquired over a lifetime of battling supernatural evil to face down the tall, immortal, and very powerful and very evil Count Dracula face-to-face. Badass.
And Van Helsing is, again, so confident in his theory that Dracula is a vampire he orchestrates that little mirror test. Dracula is of course willing to play along even though he doesn’t know what Van Helsing is up to. He’s already fooled so many that he feels he shouldn’t be concerned about whatever Van Helsing has in store for him. But then Van Helsing shows Dracula the mirror and suddenly the facade of the calm and formal aristocrat melts away revealing the evil, undead monster that he truly is. A grave miscalculation on Dracula’s part. And what’s left is a piercing and burning gaze meant only for Van Helsing from Dracula. He’s been bested. Finally, a human has proven to be smart enough to match wits with the undead Count. Dracula tries his best to salvage the situation by insisting that he simply doesn’t like mirrors, but as the movie plays on, that little moment of mirror smashing coupled with subsequent incidents and Van Helsing’s further explanations were enough to convince even the skeptical Harker and Dr. Seward that Count Dracula is indeed a vampire that needs to be vanquished.
And Van Helsing’s smirk at the very end shows that he’s genuinely pleased that he’s caught the mighty Dracula off guard. And Dracula departs with this passive-aggressive and yet cryptic line delivered so well by Lugosi. “For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you are a wise man, Van Helsing.” And thus, a legendary rivalry was born.
Excellent! Lugosi is by far the best Dracula. I just viewed the 1979, Frank Langella version. Not even close to Lugosi!

This a brilliant commentary. Hats off to you. Although I would say that Dracula wasn't trying to salvage the situation at the end; he knew Van Helsing knew, and would soon tell the others, hence the "Van Helsing will explain".

I read that whenever Bela entered a room, all eyes were immediately on him, especially the ladies.
I just saw Dracula in a movie theatre with an audience after watching it on TV and then video at home my whole life. When you see it in the movies, on the big screen, with no commercials, Lugosi is far more masterful and creepy. It's a great film, deservedly still talked about almost 100 years later. Great vid!

Bela Lugosi's acting and body language is masterful: when he talks to the men he takes an arrogant and dominant attitude but when he talks to Mina he becomes sweet, charming, seductive and paternal, he even leans towards her as if expressing submission to her beauty but when he sees the mirror he adopts the expression of a cornered wild beast but he quickly regains his composure and leaves elegantly making it clear that he is a gentleman. And how Mina looks at him! It is as if she is saying: I want to have sex with him and I want it now!
I like how langella delivered that last line.

3:28 to 3:41 The way Dracula goes from a well-mannered gentleman to wide-eyed animal after knocking the mirror out Van Helsing's hands is absolutely terrifying. He can literally turn on you out of nowhere.

You know, an influential and wonderful a movie this was, much of it pretty much consisted of the characters talking in this room for like half an hour. Still liked it, but rosetinted glasses.
Not surprising considering the movie was in part based on the broadway play version of Bram Stoker's book which Bela himself played Dracula on stage for years.
@@awesomeinspector5270 Nice. I also liked the Spanish version they literally made with the exact same set pieces. While filming the English language during the day, they filmed the Spanish language at night. Pretty cool.
Spanish version also had extra scenes.
Today's audiences don't have much patience for thoughtflu dialogue. The demand is for action. It's a sad loss but reflects diminished attention spans.

There is another version of "Dracula" made in 1979 that does this too. I haven't seen it yet, but I've watched a few youtube clips of scenes from it. I'm going to try and watch it soon.

Makes me wonder if Dracula's accent first came because of the actor's accent or was part of the script.
MagusFyre Bela Lugosi was from Hungary so his accent was all his. I rather enjoy it. Who knows how Dracula would of sounded had he not been played by the great Bela Lugosi.

@@lilymoss-yerg9666 probably British, would be my guess. Hollywood like to use British actors as royalty or aristocrats and American actors as peasants or rebels... seems fitting. So my guess would be that had Bela not gotten the role, it might've gone to Boris Karloff, who also worked for Universal Pictures.

Dracula doesn't appear in the mirror because he's an undead, right? So why doesn't he like mirrors, or can't look into mirrors?
He's a type of Ghost. Ghosts can't see their reflections in a Mirror, nor can they be seen, generally speaking.
Count Dracula to me, is a very sympathetic character. He just wants to live forever. I see notning wrong with that. Yes, his methods are unconventional but he is entitled to them .And he does have a way with women that I envy and like.
He does know how to "Put the bite" on them, doesn't he?
It's just mind boggling, the fact that a 1931 film is better than some of these movies nowadays. This movie didn't have as near as of a budget that involves tons of money as some movies nowadays that require millions of dollars to make a movie that has horrible CGI.

To be honest in this scene he (Count Drac) a bit cocky and pushy attitude (annoying scene), I like his manner when he was staying at the decaying castle, warm and fatherly.
It kinda makes sense though, because by this time Dracula was succeeding in almost all his objectives....until he met Van Helsing. Dracula's charm and mannerisms allowed him to manipulate those around him, without coming across as pushy, but when he started getting what he wanted it went to his head and become gradually bolder.
