What I love about this scene is that Dirk obviously looks up to Max and desperately wants him to get back to the guy he admired. When Max says "Take dictation please." you can see the excitement on Dirk's face because he knows that Max is back.

and there is also sunlight in the background when he looks at max, the only sunny scene in this part, which could be a continuity mistake, but for me it served the narrative very well.

The actor who plays Margareth Yang kills this scene. She really manages to portay so many different emotions at the same time, while still keeping it incredibly low-key.
She is upset with Max for being a jerk, but she keeps it civil. She shows off her rc flying skills, but she never boasts. She admits to cheating on her science project, but she totally owns is. She is also a bit enfatuated bu Max, but she doesn't let it show.
It's an absolutely great performance by such a young actor. I love it.
I also love Dirk's over-sized tennis shoes that contrasts with his otherwise preppy style.

I like most everything W.A. has produced, but I LOVE Rushmore... The scene when Herman meets Max's father... WOW! 60 year old man who's re-watched it probably 90+ times, still gets to me

My favorite of his also. And this scene as well as the one with Max and Miss Cross on the bleachers is my favorite.

I love this movie so much. I used to watch it often at a time in my life I was undergoing depression and it always made me feel better. It combines depth, humanity and humor in a very unique way.

There are two key things about Margaret in this scene I think worth mentioning:
    - Margaret's Outfit:
Her face covered and she's dressed all in black. She is clearly hiding herself because of the shame she feels from faking her project's results.
    - Her Flight Plan:
Yes it's detailed, yes it mirror's Max's personality. But the most important detail is that it's written in CRAYON. Margaret; like Max and Dirk, is still a child. They're all still growing, still learning. Still trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be.

Excellent analysis. One of my top 10 favorite movies. It amazes me that some people think that this movie is pretentious. It’s a masterpiece. One of the all-time great debut performances, and I have loved Jason Schwartzman ever since. The actress who plays Margaret Yang is amazing. I wish I could go back to 1998.

Which puts in high on the list for best scene in any movie. It's up there with the Marseilles Scene in Casablanca.

This is my favorite scene from the film, too. And what you see is what I see. But I was surprised you do not mention Max's breathing out from the bottom of his gut, as he moves his shoulders so much. You take note of the shoulder movement, but not the grand exhalation. It is Max breathing out his false self. In his subsequent encounters with Magnus, after flinging the script at him, and in his words to Miss Cross, introducing the play from the stage, and at the party afterwards, he is a new Max. No more pretending, no more Ego drive, he is trying to connect. It is very moving.

I love scene. I love the movie. I love the soundtrack. There are fewer gags in this movie than Bottle Rocket (which is awesome) but collaborating with Owen Wilson more pathos, more dimension to the characters and dialog than the more controlled approach when Anderson is completely at the helm … his later all have a Joseph Cornell feel.

    Great analysis of this scene.
Wes Anderson I believe perfected his style in this movie. Likewise, Life Aquatic had Rushmore's perfect balance of substance and style.
For me, Anderson's more recent works are so focused on his visual style that I find it distracts from the characters and the plot.
Asteroid City seemed almost like a parody of a Wes Anderson movie.

It is kind of sad that the actor that plays Max never had a full on career after Rushmore. 12:29 I think he was a fantastic actor.l for some reason he reminded me of the actor who played the kid on Danny Darko!
