I’m 23, and a few weeks ago I went to a psychologist and was diagnosed with autism after 2 years of contemplation and worrying what my family would think. It’s such a relief to finally know why I’m so different and why the world is so extremely overwhelming for me.
I’ve told my siblings and they’re happy for me, but I don’t think I’ll ever tell my parents because they won’t understand and I grew up with my dad calling me re***ded and saying I look like I’m “riding the short bus.”
Outside of my parents, though, I’m striving to be more authentically myself because I can finally appreciate how beautiful my mind is. ❤
*update about 7 months later:* I told my parents a few months ago, and they said that they tried to get me diagnosed when I was little, but the doctor said that they couldn’t “technically” diagnose me. They said that they always considered me to be autistic, but they never told me because they didn’t want to “sway” me, whatever that means. So I felt like an alien freak, and developed su1c1dal thoughts, when all along they had the answer. I wish they had had the spine to tell me.
But, other than that, things are great! I’m about to start college to study geology, and I’ve lost almost 10 lbs!

No joke this song came at a great time- I was diagnosed with Tourette’s a year or so ago and I would always try and hide it- which is extremely painful and lead to extreme fatigue and panic attacks. I’ve come out of that more but this song perfectly embodies what I’ve learned about myself- I’m tic-tastic just the way I am!

I was humming/softly singing it in drama club today while walking to stage left and one of the leads saw me and looked very confused. I froze and almost forgot what I was going to do, which was getting my bag from backstage. Only problem was that I had to walk by him because he was standing next to the door. I got my bag and had to walk back out, past him again, and ran back to the hallway in embarrassment. Not to mention, I'm on the same bus as this kid, he's 2 years older than me, and I'm in a scene with him in our school's play (A Christmas Carol). Thanks. Thanks alot. Jk no hard feelings. It's easy to get a song stuck in my head. I'm just an emotional mess. I was singing this because I've been depressed and just wanting to blurt out all my feelings. In drama club I've felt like I don't deserve my part. Everyone else is soo good and I'm not. They deserve their roles, not me. During our last day of tech week(the day I wrote this/the day I was singing this song) I was a wreck and broke down a hour prior to that situation. I just want to be like all the popular, older, better at acting singing and dancing lead roles. I'm not even jealous. I can't describe the feeling. So yeah. That's my secret that I need to share. I hate holding my feelings in and feeling like a stereotype, which I am. I'm a white straight female. Wow. So diverse I know. But I'm a depressed short child who just wants to fit in and be loved. Im tje most socially awkward human being ever and I relate more to animals.

So, to OP, let me tell you something. I absolutely understand where you're coming from. I relate to this song a lot also. But first I'd like to let you know that you don't need to feel like a stereotype. You don't need to be mad at yourself for being a straight white girl, just like I don't need to be mad at myself for being a non-straight non-white non-binary person. Deciding not to oppress people based on race/gender/sexuality means not doing that to ANYBODY, not just not doing it to people who're having it done to them now.
I have depression and ASD, and that sucks. I've spent my life trying to overcome it and it is NOT EASY. It's never easy. I know every day is a battle and I know you always get hurt but please remember that it is worth it to keep fighting. That boy didn't think you were weird, in all likelihood; he just looked at you and you interpreted it that way. And you're probably a lot better at acting than you think you are. When you compare yourself to others, you're comparing your insides to their outsides, that is, you're comparing what is inside your head with how they act, outside their head. You know what you could have done better, all they know is what you have already done well.
I understand what you mean when you say you relate to animals more than people. For a long time I related to computers more than people (weird, right? I know). The social constructs surrounding human interaction felt illogical and stupid, and the cold hard logic that machines work in made much more sense. But unfortunately for us, other humans are the only company we've got, and so we should learn to make the best of it. That can be very hard - it was for me for a long time, and it would only take a few hours before I wanted to curl up in a ball in my room and cry - but it's doable. Just keep trying.
And, to the user who replied curtly to something which didn't even necessitate their involvement: a message like that is exactly what a person in this situation does not need. If you felt so lonely that you felt a youtube comment was your only outlet, would you really want some random person to come along and say "shut it, nobody cares"? You already know that and you just wanted to vent into the void. It makes you feel so much worse than you did before because a comment like that acknowledges what your brain was already saying: that nobody cares about you or your problems enough to listen. Not your friends or family, and not even a random stranger on the internet.

I'm still very socially awkward and shy, but I now have more freinds and I'm constantly making new ones. All I had to do was figure out the one thing in life I enjoyed most. Acting. It took a while to realize it, but I'm not alone anymore. I have people who will support me. Even people who I barely know.
