How to Be Resilient With An Internal Locus of Control

- Do you feel like you're in control of what happens in your life? Developing an internal locus of control can improve your confidence and quality of life by teaching you to become more resilient in the face of challenges. When you take responsibility for the circumstances and outcomes in your life, you teach your brain that it has the ability to exert control over situations that seem beyond your control.

1. Focus on what you can control
2. Have a bias for small choices that provide quick feedback
3. Have a bias for choices that reinforce your sense of control
4. Take responsibility for everything that happens in your life
5. Develop your decision making and problem-solving skills
6. Model people with an internal locus of control
7. Create an implementation intention for particularly challenging situations
- Develop mindfulness
- A response is different from a reaction
1. Remember that everything is a choice
2. When you react to something, ask yourself a set of questions
3. Identify what you can do that will improve the situation
4. Remember that no one can make you think or feel anything
5. Notice how you talk to yourself when you're uncomfortable or happy
6. Celebrate situations where you were able to influence an outcome
Another strategy is to listen to, and choose, your use of language. For example, "We can't afford that." or "We aren't choosing to spend our money on that right now."

I just realized how external my locus is
It's very HARD to accept responsibility for everything that happens in my life when anything that goes wrong at work my boss puts all of it on me. I can recognize the role I played in the situation, but he never can, and when he pushes it all on me there's some natural opposing resistance there.
You are right, it is definitely not easy. I want to point out an important distinction, though. Your comment about how your boss puts things that go wrong at work on you sounds more like blame than responsibility. While those two things are definitely related, they are not the same. You should not accept blame for things that aren't your fault. But at the same time, you can accept responsibility for your own actions, even if only for choosing to stay in a job that (presumably) makes you miserable. I hope you are able to find a resolution to your difficult situation.
Amazing!!
Thanks for this wonderful piece of work.
