Guitarists Shred the Metallica Riffs That Made Them

  • There's no doubt Metallica have inspired countless musicians to pick up a guitar and start a band.
Through many, many episodes of Gear Factor, we've heard shredder after shredder say the same thing. The first song they learned? The band that made them want to play in the first place? Their favorite riffs? The mighty Metallica, of course.
That's why we decided to revisit a multitude of players, from Ghost's Tobias Forge to GWAR's Pustulus Maximus, gushing about the Metallica riffs that inspired them to learn to play and even want to start a band in the first place.
Formed in Los Angeles, in 1981, before relocating to San Francisco two years later, Metallica helped both spearhead and define the thrash metal genre. In the ‘90s, they embraced more accessible sounds and new compositional styles that took them to new heights.
One song that many guitarist say they first learned is "Seek and Destroy" from 1983's Kill 'Em All. And, of course, you'll hear a lot of "Master of Puppets" from their 1986 album of the same name and, perhaps their most well-known song, "Enter Sandman" from their eponymous 1991 album. If you're new, Subscribe! → bit.ly/subscribe-loudwire

It's amazing how many riffs are played wrong in this video. That's not a criticism, but rather a product of how learning songs used to be in the 80's and 90's. We either had to learn by ear, or hope that they would publish a tab book (which was usually completely wrong). Not that there isn't misinformation out there, but it is infinitely easier to learn songs now, though I think the struggle to figure things made us all better.

I went to a party and there was this kid playing Metallica I sat down and listened for an hour, next day got a guitar and learned nothing but Metallica stuff for a Year (maybe some Deep Purple Sabbath too) because i was hooked on metallica and the idea i could do that too.

I listened to metallica before, liked a lot of songs, but when I heard Dyers Eve after solo part I just fell on floor cause of the headbanging. Defenitly will buy a guitar to play this when i get some money, even if this is pretty hard

Crazy how so many people can play the same chords in the same tun and still manage to sound different

Got bored and didn’t finish the entire video but Wherever I may Roam and Sad but True are amazing riffs and tunes. Beginner level stuff as far as Metallica goes but sooooo fun to play.

"First song on my guitar was definitely For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica... cause it's so simple..."
*plays something vaguely similar to FWTBT*
I mean... at least some of the chords were right.

While all of RTL is where I cut my teeth and what made me serious about the guitar, the first time I ever ran to my parents to show them something was when I got Dyers Eve down. I remember getting it once, with the album, and screaming with joy.
First riff, though? Nothing Else Matters. On a beaten down old Stella acoustic.
I was playing badminton rackets like guitars and the couch cushions to the Black Album way before that, though.

I remember when I got the Black album for Christmas Enter Sandman was on every rock radio station known to man but to get to the point I had a walkman with the black album inside it and it was during me having open heart surgery I took the cassette to the operating room with me and I told them play the first song on side 1 it was Enter Sandman and I remember hearing EXIT LIGHT ENTER NIGHT TAKE MY HAND WE'RE OFF TO NEVER NEVER LAND they put the mask on my face and I faded out

Funny how everyone said it was Metallica songs that got them wanting to play guitar. My Dad was why I got into guitar, bc he played and I wanted to play with him when I was 7. He would try to show me something easy but cool, I would get it down a bit, then we'd go into the kitchen and play for whoever was over drinking coffee and eating cake. Things like, "Walk don't Run, Earth Angel, that generic blues run, wipe out, house of the rising sun, Day Tripper. Good times.

@@matthewfreeman33 For me, that's not the point. Lots of guitar players don't even play Enter Sandman's riff exactly like James does. The fact that a brazilian girl was invited to be a part of it, for me, is amazing. Check out the quality of her authoral work. It might surprise you! 😉
