This is an absolutely stellar mic. I checked it out at NAMM in 2020. (I actually own a few Cloudlifters.) I happen to love ribbon mics. Perhaps you can do more videos like this with other ribbon mics.
You noticed how great this mic sounded on bass. I've used my Shure KSM313 ribbon mic on a Mark Bass amp head with Mark 8X10 cabinet; no compression or EQ was needed.

Great cover. Great mic. I love ribbons, never owned one or recorded with one but I remember trying to find out how 'Bing' and others of the era got that 'silk' sound as I couldn't figure it out on my own and then learned it was an RCA ribbon. Wonderful. Really excellent demo man!

Wow…pleasantly surprised by how great it sounds on acoustic guitars. Love it on trombone (incidentally I recently did a session with trombone and opted to use my JZ V47--relatively shiny, new toy--and was really happy; but I'll have to A-B my 44-A against that). Thanks, as always, for the great/informative videos!

  • @annode

I don't have experience mic'ing. I don't exactly know how to listen for good performance. I did notice the flatness / smoothness of it's inherent spectrum, so I understand that is a sign of good performance? But what else? Lack of sibilance? Thought I heard some. Comparing specs and graphs of course.
Wish you hadn't recorded drums. I thought it ruined the mix, plus made everything else, individually, almost impossible to judge critically.
I think what your doing here Warren is great for everyone, the manufacturers/retailers and us, the consumers. It's very difficult now-a-days to make educated purchases since most of us have to buy on-line. Providing us with actual in-use performance is invaluable!

I expected this mic to do well on the vocals, the trombone, and the guitars. The surprise was that bass. If I had one (i.e., if I win one) I'd likely never go DI bass again. Nice review. I sat out AES this year even though I'm just a LIRR ride and a walk away from the Javits.

Great track! I was a bit surprised to actually hear trombone for the solo. It makes me wish I'd kept up with my trombone playing after high school, but at the time, I just wanted to rock. Oh, and I'm a big fan of ribbons (have a couple) and the Cloud seems pretty well perfect, not only on guitar or bass, but vocals if you're after a vintage sound. Thanks!
