  • How To Save Carrot Seeds! Saving carrot seeds is easy, but it's also time consuming. As a Biennial plant, carrots take two years to complete their life cycle. They need to go through a winter "vernalization" period to stimulate flowering and seed production. This makes carrot seed production a little more involved with a couple extra steps when compared to your other veggie crops.
    In today's video we'll go over everything you need to know to save your own carrot seeds so that you can have unlimited carrots every year. Seeds can get expensive, and every time we save a batch, we become a little more self sufficient. :-)

    I bought some carrots from a local grower. Cut the tops off and planted the tops directly in soil. It immediately started growing greens, and much to my surprise, they started flowering a couple months after.

    I guess I should have guessed that you can replant the chopped carrot itself to produce seeds. I did this but I just replanted a few full sized carrots in containers outside the garden. The carrot itself is a root so of course it would grow back! Awesome

    A couple of years I fall planted carrots here in Idaho right before the ground froze,covered lightly with peat moss and ended up with carrots by the end of June! That was fun. I was told carrots germinate better with a freeze. The potato farm I worked for always put their carrot seed in the freezer for 2 weeks before planting.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  Před rokem +1

      Yes, a lot of seeds germinate better with a chilling period. Its called "stratification" and it gives the seed and seed coat clues to sprout when moisture and heat hit it. Totally normal.

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  Před rokem +1

      Potatoes are actually tropical plants. Although the tubers can be harvested in cold and freezing ground, the plants need to be grown over summer.

    • @tesswagner895
      @tesswagner895 Před rokem +1

      @@busygirl2681 I've tried winter planting potatoes without much success. Here in the NW, most folks I know wait until May. A few adventuresome will actually dig IN the snow to plant on St Patrick's day 😆 Fall planted are not an option if you are looking for a crop before winter unless you are in a "banana belt"region like Southern Idaho. You need a minimum of 60 days of warmth and would be planting in August or end of July for a fall crop.

    It has been an interesting process, and I really wish I would have labeled the carrots stalks what variety they were because I put two varieties in the garden and all of the flowers look the same ahh
    But from this video, I learned you should not plant multiple varieties together anyways, so I’m glad it was just an experiment and I am not too attached, especially since I can grow flowers any other year I wish!
    Also that is a very smart trick to cut the carrot root off and still be able to use the carrot greens and tiny top of the carrot root.
    Super interesting!

    Last year, I planted carrot seeds in my community garden bed. They sprouted enough to push little green leaves through the soil; but, when the hot weather hit, they all died off. This year, I planted a few more carrot seeds; but, I also planted bush beans and peas around them. The weather still got hot; but, the carrot seedlings were protected from the hot sun. I've been able to harvest carrots; but, they're not as big as the ones you have. I planted most of the seeds around the middle of May. The weather was still cool. There are still carrots to be harvested; but, I won't be able to leave them in the ground throughout the winter.
    The city says we have to have everything out by the end of October. Now that I know that the city has given us a new spot to garden in, I might try that trick that you showed. I am going to try to get two beds side by side if possible. Either I can grow more stuff or not try to fit so much in such a limited space.
