I finally got my hands on a 3s Lipo battery for my Tamiya Boomerang. Im running an 80amp cheap esc and a cheap 5900kv motor on stock Boomerang gears. Im not sure how long the gears will last because it wheelies and flips backward at full speed! Hahahaha. More speed run vids to follow. Like and Subscribe guys, I appreciate the support.😀🍺🍺

Dude! You are doing 50 with a 25+ year old car! Haha watching this is like watching a model t Ford run a 10 second quarter mile! U need a wheelie bar man!
That's hilarious...hahahaha🤣 You're right. I should do this with a Tamiya Sand Scorcher...lol...even better. Theres an idea☝️ The fastest Scorcher in the world..lol.
@@KaizerTest hahahaha or a grasshopper. Sheesh. That thing is moving and on knobbies u got balls dude
@@motortoys9942 You know..I just built a Tamiya TT02 and with no gyro and modern radio I cant keep it straight. I managed a few times and got 41mph. This Boomerang at 49mph with 25 year old radio is way easier to control. Im baffled. Isnt a TT02 (on road car) supposed to be better on road than a buggy?
is'nt the car rather 35 years old?
@@KaizerTest Your suspension on the TT02 is probably uneven....that will make it difficult to drive straight at high speed.
Now this is pure awsome dude! As a 80's child this is just awsome to see man... imagine if we had brushless technology back then..😱😱
Hahaha... I know. This hobby is like new to me again because I was out of it around 1993 just before lipo batteries came around(actually not sure when exactly they came on the scene)..lol. But coming back now with Lipo and the huge motors is insane! TO be honest I was happy with an old Tamiya and a modern esc/motor but now the speeds I'm going with my Slash and how high I can jump with my Typhon has got me like a little kid again.
OMG that thing is wild! I took the central driveshaft out of mine to make it rear wheel drive and then built a wheelie bar for it to stop it flipping over. I like Ghostbusters too 😂
Thanks brother. Ya it was fun to rip that thing for sure.
My first ever real RC car what I mean when I say real is that it was fully upgradable and you could replace every single piece of you broke any thing all I ever broke was the servo saver and two drive cups.My best mate gave me a le mans gold race motor a esc and a samsung race pack battery for my bday with all that and the double front shock kit I received on the same bday that's when my boomerang really comes alive
You need to cancel the lift generated from the front bumper. Wrap it in some pipe insulation and tape or just remove it.
Yeah good idea. That upturned bumper is like a wing...hahahaha. I'm thinking of pushing this car faster by modding the gearbox to take a bigger pinion. I'm also looking for a 6900kv motor because of that gearbox limitation.
@@KaizerTest I run mine with a 17t pinion.
Great video. I've just pulled my 35yo Boomerang and Thunder Dragon out of storage. Took stock of what's needed to get them going. Ordered new radio gear, servo, bearings and motor esc combo. Getting the Thunder Dragon going first. Then do my boomerang.
I wish my 1987 Boomerang went that fast.😂
It's not that hard really.
@@KaizerTest
Actually it would be very difficult considering I sold it in 1991 to help fund a RC helicopter. 😄🇦🇺
I love ghost busters too!
😃
damn.
have great memories of this and the Falcon.
awesome man.
Thanks bro. It's definitely one of my favorites. I hope Tamiya does another run of this car because I sold my In Box duplicates. I need another Hotshot too. I had a great day with the kids this day we videoed this.😃👍
50 mph is great for this car. I would have thought the tires would balloon like crazy. 80 amp esc is massive! Awesome upgrade, bro.
The lift generated in the front: I wouldn't bother using weights as some do. I usually ziptie the a-arms down, so the front don't rise up by decompressing the shocks (if there are no droop screws). Of course I don't know how to apply the ziptie method with that horizontal shock of the boomerang
Thanks brother. Good tips with the zip ties. Didi you see my latest vids with the Tamiya Top force? 71Mph on 4s...lol. Totally stock except BSR foam tires. 66Mph on stock tires..totally stock car.
@@KaizerTest I have the same boomerang setup as you and lowered the front by putting a spacer inside the shock, seems to help with the lift. Those cheap motors and esc are great value
@@rnichol22 Sweet! Do you use it for speed runs only?
@@KaizerTest Pretty much but only because I use it on our straight road most of the time. I'm suprised the gearbox is still lasting but so far so good. Need to get it on a big dust field and let rip
@@rnichol22 yeah the gearboxes on the old buggies lasted longer than my TT02B buggy...lol. That surprised me.
Damn lol. I own the reissue Hotshot, Super Hot Shot, and Boomerang, but other than all 3 of mine being fully ball raced, they are box art stock. I’m even using old school 6 cell packs. Lol....this thing moves
Nice! Nothing wrong with box art. I have since retired this car to an easier life...hahaha. Putting the stickers on it and letting it rest on the shelf.
Man i love the boomerang. Was my 2nd rc car after the falcon.
Awesome
My first car was a radio shack 1 channel 1957 Chevy in black with flames...lol. Then I got a Frog in 1984. Then a Hornet, Hotshot in 85, Falcon in 87 then a Blitzer Beetle in the early 90's with a Traxxas Nitro in there too at that time.
I never had a Boomerang in the day but I love it too. It has the cool single front shock but it's improved over my Hotshot. And it can handle 3s lipo...hahahaha. Should I try 4s? Maybe 6s? hahahahahaha.
Damn always loved that car!!!!!!
I have a TT02B which is more modern but the Boomer is a better car. Better suspension, clearance and gears IMO.
That’s the fastest tamiya boomerang I have ever seen.
Hahaha...thanks. 😃 My Top Force did 71Mph and my Slash does 132Mph. Do you have a Boomerang as well?
... Great vid!. I wish to upgrade my Boomerang!. If I recall back along all i did was upgraded the motor and bearings. I need to upgrade the device that has your car running away from you, once on low power?. A nice brush less motor would be good too
Yeah its a fun car for sure. I have a soft spot for Tamiya being an 80's kid.
Nice!! That was quick
Thanks brother! Yeah pretty fast for an old Tamiya design.😃
That is cool, My first proper rc was a boomerang I loved it
Thanks brother! The Boomerang is a very well built car. After doing all these speed runs I have been running on 3s and so far the gearbox has held up. I'm amazed! My TT02B gears shattered in the rear diff after 1 minute on 3s. I'm thinking the glass infused plastic is brittle compared to regular plastic. My first buggy was a Frog in 1983 and then a Hotshot. I also had a Grasshopper and Falcon. Good times they were(slow compared to now...lol) but still had fun. Although I run Traxxas and Arrma now I still run Tamiya's when I want a more leisurely RC time with my kids. Plus I still run NIMH packs as well as lipo so I don't have to worry about storage charging etc. Thanks for watching bro. I'm probably going to build a Monster Beetle next and see what speed I can get out of it before I offroad it. My Top force did 71Mph which astonished me. If I could find the high speed gear set I would go for 80 plus Mph..hahaha.
@@KaizerTest So the boomerang is running stock diffs?..Back in the day when we thought our hobby grade rc were fast, if only we knew what the future held .
@@markjevons7650 Yes stock diffs. I know...I had a "fast" HPI corvette back around 1994. Thats about when I quit RC until a few years ago. Its like I took a time machine to the future when I saw how fast guys were going. Its like a brand new hobby again for me😀
@@KaizerTest That's incredible!!...I've had a few nitro models in the past which were also quick but brushless is the king of speed now.
@@markjevons7650 Yeah brushless is King. I've done 121Mph almost 200kph in my Slash 4x4 speed run car. The speed is insane now. I'm trying for 150Mph.
same problem i had over 50mph the front boomerang bumper acts like a wing and it lifts the front.! i got it over 60 and it still does the same thing when i took the bumper off. needs a slight down force to stop the front from trying to make it take off lol
Wow! you got it ti 60mph...nice job brother...Pretty darn fast for an old school Tamiya buggy....lol.
@@KaizerTest yeah its surprising how stable these old cars are at speed really thats with a cheetah brushless motor 11v 35c 4200mah Vant Lipo battery with a 17t pinion.. and the gearbox still holds out even today, but on the esc you have to dial down the punch otherwise it just 4 wheel drive spins out everywhere on burst throttle lol. Had my boomy since 1987 took me nearly a year to save up for it then bought it and has gone through many motor upgrades since then im 50 now! and its still a blast as my now son into the RC thing and has 3 of them inc a drift rc car. he`s 13. I do have a Maverick Vader 1/5th but needs an esc and they are not cheap. Oh i dont use the standard wheels on the boomy, they are like 80mm gravel type road tyres and glued to the rims with metal hex hub conversion. oh and last thing dont have the brake come in too hard at speed as it will damage the internal plastic gears, also use a good grease for them gears, I use lithium printer gear grease thats used in an old HP designjet 500/800 :) works great.
Can you help me with your configuration ?
What do you need to know? I'd be glad to help.
The air got under the bumper pushing the front wheels up:) never designed to go that fast lol
😂 Have you seen this one yet? czcams.com/video/Ukg9STvj61I/video.html
This wasn't designed to go 132mph but it was fun doing it. czcams.com/video/NFSJhduq7eQ/video.html
Hi - super fast. What Pinion gear are you running.?
Hey thanks...its the stock pinion with a 5900kv motor.
Hi, love the vid! Did you have any issues with getting the nimh to work with this ESC? I have the same esc although mine is GoolRC (same one different stocker to yours) mine only works for about 90 seconds and then cuts out, plus it’s very slow - nowhere near as quick as yours is! Mine is 4300KV motor .. wondering if my esc is faulty? It also takes about 30 attempts to arm the esc
Hi Ed. No I had no issues at all with the esc. It's basically plug and play. There is a small program card you can buy that lets you change the low voltage cut off for lipo batteries and you can adjust brake force and punch level from soft, medium and strong...but that's it. I believe it's set up at medium punch and 0v cutoff so be careful with a lipo until you get a card. Is it possible you have a plug wire reversed going to your receiver? Or motor wire loose?
Other than that I can't think of what it could be...that's weird. Maybe try it with a different receiver and make sure the plugs are in the right locations on the receiver and in correctly for neg and positive. And try a different battery. Let me know what happens.
Thanks so much for the reply bud! I’ll double check all of the wiring tomorrow and will get back you! Loving the boomerang 💙
@@edmuncherstylus2963 The Boomer is a great handling buggy. And with this setup you get about 32-35MPH on NIMH with 5000mah battery. It gives lots of speed, nice long run times, cheap batteries(compared to Lipo), and the motor was cool after running on grass for a full pack. Whats not to love. But sadly the Boomerang is discontinued now. I still have another one in a box along with Hotshot, Bigwig, and some others so I'm good for a long time. Just sad to see the Boomerang not produced anymore. It's a great all around buggy. I have Traxxas and Arrma 6s but I still love my Tamiyas.
Hah that brushless set up should come with a front wing...
Yeah I should turn the bumper upside down...lol.
Looking like you need a bit more weight on the nose, stick on car wheel weights work well, but I've found nailing another Lipo on helps too 😉
Yeah I agree. I was thinking of a few AA batteries taped to the front...lol.
@@KaizerTest ,make sure you glue the tyres too, they disappear at 51mph if you don't......😬
czcams.com/video/wwu-n8Cn8Bc/video.html
Cool, what motor, esc & battery did you use?
I have a vid just before this one with this setup but on 7.2v Nimh. It shows the inside and the esc and motor. The motor is a Surpass 5900kv motor (3650 size like a brushed 540). The esc is a RCharlance 60amp brushless. The battery is a Goldbat 3s. 3000mah 30c lipo. Its all Ebay and Amazon cheap stuff. Seems to hold up ok so far. I have room to go up a few teeth on the pinion so I should get 55mph out of her eventually.
@@KaizerTest Thanks!
@@whome5810 No problem bro.
Just flip the front bumper and you'll have some downforce.
Yeah this is true. Or maybe a little weight. My Top Force went a lot faster..71mph. No Flip.
@@KaizerTest lighter car with just enough downforce will give you a higher speed. Try it and post another video of the results!
I have two boys. I can relate. The front end coming up, is that just air getting under the chassis or just squat from the acceleration?
It's a little air, and a little from it being the power from a brushless system. I hit 138 today with my Traxxas Slash 4x4. I was enjoying overpowering these old Tamiya's for awhile. I got my Tamiya Top Force to 71 Mph as well.
Hi I had one of these a long time ago if you want to get some real speed from this model remove all the gears from the front gearbox and the drive shafts and the prop shaft, lower the suspension put some soft shock oil in cut the bumper down so only the middle remains and trim the top down make sure there’s lots of grease in the drive shafts I upgraded mine to poly bones but that’s not an option for you any way... I ran 8.4v nicad on a 10 double motor and I used to (in the uk in the hard shoulder (at the side of the motor way) used to drag race real cars away from a traffic junction) where the speed limit was 70mph I won lots😀😀😁👍this was about 1987😂😂😂
Wow! Nice. Yeah this was just a test but this was miles per hour. That's 78 Kilometers per hour. My Top Force did 71 Miles per hour or 114 Kilometers per hour. If you were doing 70mph with one of these in 1987 that's pretty amazing with 8.4 volts and a brushed motor. 😮 But 11.1 volts and a 4.5 turn motor with stock gearing got me the 49mph.
I may have to try making it rear wheel drive and going for more speed some day.
@@KaizerTest well I doubt it was 70mph we had no technology then for measuring the speed of the model but it was proper rapid but I experienced the front end lift way back then😀
@@milesthedj8466 Nice! Well we were kinda like the speed run pioneers back then. I took a Tamiya Hornet and taped two 7.2v packs to the side nerf bars and wired them in series for 14.4 volts....hahaha. It instantly blew my speed control resistors and I had only one speed...lol. It went pretty fast though for awhile. 😂
@@KaizerTest wow you did that to a hornet that was my first proper car, I did once revisited it later on and put a dynatec motor in it that was really fast at the time which made it super fast but instantly uncontrollable but sadly it had hard brush with a wall and that was the last time it ran 🙁 however I did have a hot shot that didn’t handle at speed so I put a fox front end on it that was more stable (when it had the anti roll bar on it ) making it a fox shot 😀 and I had that up to 9.6v pack in it that was the max the speed controller could handle on a 12 turn motor but the problem was it twist the drive shafts and rip the tyres to bits after a few runs because the speed controller slope was a little high (old tec ) and no slipper clutch but really fast and good fun 🤩
Thats what I am talking about lol
Yeah brother. I love this thing on 3s. I just need to find spare gears...hahahaha. I wonder if I could mod the rear gearbox and put a big pinion in there. A 75mph Boomerang? Hahahahaha
@@KaizerTest , you can elongate the motor bolts mounting slots in the rear gearbox housing, I have seen that done on tamiya club forums and in vintage racing circles, they aren't cheap but the MIP ball diffs would certainly help the driveline stay in one peice, your boomer is obviously a re re , the mip ball diffs are designed for re re gearbox housings, so no issue there, keep it up mate
@@snappy1669 Thanks for the tips brother.
