I can see the appeal of a Toyota for maneuverability but that torque that you have has got to be so sweet. The diesel noise is a downer. I'd LOOOOOVE to see a vid of a group of overlanders talking about the pros and cons of different choices in their rigs. Dream rigs. 😃

The larger mufflers from companies like Donaldson can take a lot of the noise out of the diesels. I played around with this on my 2001 ram.
The real improvement came with the common rail motors. The direct injection engines are so much quieter than the older ones, it’s unbelievable. The clicking racket at idle is the most noticeable difference, the common rail engines idle quietly and keep the ambient and in-cab noise down.
Super excited to get to this state with my truck. Picked her up 2 weeks ago. 1998.5 24 valve, crew cab w/ long bed
i think you have the right idea. drive train is unbeatable and by buying used old dodge you can swap all the junk parts on them. so everything but the drive train. at the end of the day you will save money. better parts last longer. to buy a new truck and set it up would be 100k easy. i like this way as now all the new parts can be after market. pretty damn cool. nice rig.
Love the setup. I just picked up the km3s for my dodge 2500 cummins. I have the km3s on my Jeep thats got a Cummins in it too, I like the tires overall, but sometimes you can't beat dedicated mud tires or something.

I’ve always thought this truck looked great when I’ve seen it on IG. Seeing it in depth has changed my opinion about a lot of the details. I appreciate his enthusiasm, but there is a bunch of things that really don’t make sense to me on this rig.
Why build a cow killer bumper without a winch?
The headlights are goofy, leave that to tuner cars.
Subwoofers waste a ton of space that is better used for gear.
Secure your rifle, you make us gun guys look bad.
The shelf thing looks like a deathtrap, it’s obvious that he just winged it without any plan.
I’m glad he changed the wheels, 20s are for brodozers.
I don’t think I’d have done a big turbo on an overland rig, the lag makes low speed stuff difficult.
Water-meth injection would be nice to keep egt down when towing in the mountains.
I really dig the service box trailer, I’ve contemplated doing that if I upgrade to a tray bed on my Ford build.
I appreciate that he was honest about the tent rack wind drag. I’m very happy with my decision to straddle the top of my service box and keep it behind the cab.
I like the wrap, I will likely wrap mine then do the clear ceramic coating.
I enjoy seeing second gen dodges, i miss mine. I see lots of “what not to do” items here, which is also helpful. Thanks for the quality content, bromigo.
Hey man! Thanks for the constructive critiscm. I see what your saying, but a lot of the things you listed are so minor and just personal preference. The shelves are actually really solid and lock in place so they wont be coming out un announced. The lights are also personal preference (I think they're cool, depends how much they cost. I got new headlight housings for $100 but still need new bulbs. If these were 2-300 with good bulbs that wouldn't be too bad. People would love that at expos and such. The subwoofer takes up space but he has plenty of that to go around.

Agree on rifle retention, no need to give the grabbers and net nannies example to come after constitutionally protected rights. Subs are personal preference for sure, but I’d leave them out also. Like the honesty about many drawbacks including wind drag of the overcab tent. I’d also be concerned about turbo lag in low speed. I’m about to acquire a new to me 03 quad cab, long bed 6 speed and planning to make it an adventure rig. Probably not full overland status like this, but definitely will have some custom ceatures

I have a 01 2500 slt gas job. love the truck till I have to feed her. I get over it as quick as she is. Done over 4k worth of repairs. The truck sat a long time and just plowed a few driveways (aka door yard). Got it with 86k on it and she be at 120k

My 2nd gen is more of a tool hauler than an overland camper. But its going camping in a couple of weeks. I bought my cap and bedslide used on Craigslist for much cheaper than retail. It took some qork to get it qhere it is today but it looks great and does exactly what i need it to. I have most of the functionality of a new AEV. Their truck is around $100k. I bought and built mine out for like $6k.
I swear i just seen that truck in flagstaff az this afternoon. If not it was damn close to it.

I've used Nikwax Products for years. Their first demo was to waterproof an Anaperna down sleeping bag, then float the inventor, all 17 Stone, that's 238 pounds, of him across a 7 foot deep pond. Certainly attracted attention. The products work as advertised every time.

Oh no way! Ya it was an awesome spot for sure! I actually didnt end up riding there unfortunately. We got there around dinner time and left the next afternoon. I will be back though for sure and cant wait to meet you at NW as well! My rig will be in the hellwig booth so stop by and I'll give you a sticker!

I drove my 95 ram 2500 today! Ooh I forget how old school is hahaha I towed like 7k, easy for the truck... But... I know this truck it almost unbeatable.. but.. daaaaam it's tired to drive it for 180 miles hahaha I forget about that...and today I get the reminder hahaha.

Wow this is such a nice build. I’m struggling finding one I think isn’t beat to shit. Any advice when buying one? Like things to look for on a test drive or even physically find under the hood or the chassis ?
Try finding one from California lol. No rust. Plus a lot of diesel owners don't want to deal with the high gas prices and inspection and registrations for the trucks. And look out for coolant leaks. Most likely they have a blown gasket. Trust me they know it's there and will act stupid when you find the leak. Look inside the turbo as well for an oil leak in there or if the little fan inside the turbo is wobbly and loose if it's just an oil leak it shouldn't be too much of a big deal if you don't mind it. Also if it's between 170k and 250k miles transmission is about to give out. So that's something your gonna have to deal with eventually. I'm just giving my advice since I have a 2nd Gen Cummins. The first seller had the blown gasket. The 2nd time I looked at one I bought it, it looked bad cosmetically but mechanically it was good. I got it with 170k miles and transmission just gave out with 240k miles I currently have it shop for transmission rebuild. Also try to avoid the trucks that have been modified like having cold air intakes and compound turbos that stuff is dumb to have. Find as stock as possible. Also the paint being faded and cracked dashes is very common too so that's another thing that's gonna be a it is what it is situation .

Is it safe to keep a gun there? I’d at least want it in a body mounted lock box under the seat or something. You have a pickup truck bed too so there’s a ton of room under there to keep it safe. Don’t want anyone breaking in and stealing it.
its packed so damn tight nothing will hurt it. and if anyone wants anything there is little you can do to stop them. lots of things will slow em down but the saying goes locks only keep honest people out. keep the ammo locked and hidden so there is no legal recourse and what not....
matt coady I’m thinking it would at least make it so they couldn’t just break a window, grab it, and run. Being in a lockbox would make it not worth going for. However this doesn’t seem like a rig that’s ever used in very populated areas so I’m sure it’s fine.

Would you do anything different on your rig. I thought about buying a slide in but it was 3000lb and it had foam walls with a shower I some how feel I need a shower. Neadles to say way to heavy but the shower would be nice.

I could totally understand getting a modern turbo with better features, faster spool etc... but a bigger turbo? just gonna create more lag off road that makes very little sense. Sounds like he modded it before he decided he wanted to start overlanding. Just a hunch Possibly the turbo isn't that ''fat'' he just tried to make it sounds that way.

2001 was the last year for the 1500. That truck is a 2500 and they stoped that body generation in 2002.

O 24 valve electronic injectors you have my sympathy. Maybe someday you can get a good truck and a good motor the 12valve is the only way to go baby. that there is a million mile motor. And then some. But no worries man hate when you're truck take a puke with those electronic injectors and all that computer crap go's to pot. I'll be glad get out my tow chains and hook my old school 12 valve to you puked out truck and give you a free tow to the salvage yard. No need to thank me. I do it for 24 valver's all the time. Give me a call. My 12valve has 875,000 miles on it. And it will still be ticking right along when yours take a crap.
