Newer addressable technology has certainly moved these type of setups on, but I have so much respect for how much harder it was before them. The amount of wires and setup that goes into this is staggering.

Your comment about the time it takes to program is much like video editing. That takes about one hour for every minute tape time. I can't tell you the number of times I was asked why it would take a week to edit a videotape 12 minutes long. "You should be able to take it out of the betacam and give it to the customer!"
It IS a great feeling to accomplish it to get your final product. One can breathe after (until the next project comes up, then we do it all over again.)
    Well done, young man!

As a fellow lighting enthusiast, I can really appreciate what goes into these displays. My own displays only have currently have one RGB element. Everything else is done the same way as yours (although at a far smaller scale) with adjacent lights triggered for color changes and effects. Amazing job!! :-D

quad color leds ether in strips / boards of appropriate length or you could make or get made into curtains or flexi pads for the palm trees then DMX the hell out of it. It might take like 4 DMX universes and more than 5hours work work for every min of outplay.

You should go into RGB lights. I use Smart String controllers from DIYlightanimation com. It is a really cool setup as you can make a lot more colors and the RGB lights are waterproof. Plus, this setup sends power and data through a Cat 5e cable reducing the wire count! I am slowly phasing out old strands for RGB. Grant it I am not running 416 channels ;-) I think I am at 227 channels myself.
