      I consider myself an atheist for many reasons that I won't go into. I do, however, know a good human from a not so good human and Rev. Ed nailed it with Dolly and Jimmy. I had a conversation with my aunt a few months ago about the division currently plaguing the US. Back in the 70's she was pretty much a hippie and mentioned that she voted for Jimmy but was embarrassed to admit it because most people consider his presidency to be a failure. I replied to her saying "maybe it was a failure but you should know that you supported a good human being."

She has given away millions and millions of books to children, among other things she does for other people. She is using her wealth and popularity for nothing but good. In the 80s, they took me to drag shows, and that was so much fun! Even then, there were drag performers who emulated Dolly Parton, and from everything I've read about her, she feels honored by those who mimic her in drag.
    I don't know why people are freaking out about drag shows now, they've been around for over a hundred years. I _loved_ going to those shows, where else could I see Dolly, Streisand, Tina Turner, and Donna Summer on the same stage??

      They have short memories. Charlie Chaplin, Katherine Hepburn, Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, Julie Andrews and Cary Grant all cross-dressed in movies. Milton Berle dressed in drag in the Carol Burnett show. Flip Wilson and his character Geraldine provided family entertainment on his comedy show. And what about Tom Hanks on the TV show Bosom Buddies? Drag shows are a red-herring issue that politicians on the right are using to stoke outrage among their sheep. If Milton Berle or Flip Wilson in drag had read to children in the library in 1960, no one would have thought a thing about it. They would have had to turn people away.

    I lived in Dolly Partons hometown for almost 20 yrs. She is so real. She loves the Lord and she really shows it. She never forgot where she came from. When the Smoky mountains had a bad fire few years ago, Dolly took care of every family for 6 months and helped them get back on their feet. She gives every graduating student at the high school where she graduated a two year scholarship to go to college if they want it. I could go on and on about love she shows to people, there is so much that she does. She is not a snob but just a country girl who made it big in the music industry but you would never know it by her actions. She talks with gratitude about her family and the way she grew up. Her mother and dad had to be exceptional people who loved the Lord and taught their children to do the same. I have never heard Dolly ever say an unkind word about anyone. She loves thats all she does. Just loves and does not hate. I don't even know that she dislikes anyone. Nothing but positive comes from her life. Lots of women want yo be like her but not for the glamor, we want to love others, show true kindness and be grateful for the love God has for us. I've never heard anyone ever say a bad word about Dolly. Ghey can't. Gods love radiates from her very bring and Noone can deny that. This person who criticized her, if she could spend ten minutes with Dolly Parton, she woild feel very ashamed of herself. Dolly would not say bad things about her, she would find something positive to say about that situation because God gives her an inner sense of people and always tries to understand where people are coming from. Shes not only a spirit filled person but she is very intelligent and God has given her something very special. A spirit of love and caring about her fellow man. I could never say enough kind words to describe this woman. She grew up in a family of men and women preachers and thats what she thats what she was obviously taught that God loves us so much and we are to express that love to others.

    Dolly has never forgotten her roots, and wealth hasn't changed her. She has a heart of gold, and she loves to see others happy. Dolly doesn't have a hateful, immoral bone in her body. She is a class act. I have been a fan since I was a little bitty kid. Not so much for her music, but more for who she is as a human being. Her music is just a bonus.

    True loving spiritual inspiration is the most threatening thing to the MAGA-vangelists. As long as there are not models to reach for, they can keep people punching down. Dolly has been that, for us, she 'saved' so many of us. She has been a window of hope, that another way of being, can be, for generations living with cultural abuse. She has created safe places for the vulnerable LONG before the politics lean that way. She has Literally be the sparkly light, guiding them/us through dark times.

      The first time I saw Dolly was when I was ten years old, in 1971. She performed her song, "The Coat of Many Colors", and I've loved her ever since.
      I wasn't poor, but I was bullied a lot at school for other reasons. I felt like she was singing that song to me.
      I recommend to anyone who hasn't heard that song in a minute, to listen again (get a hanky ready first, it's a tearjerker). She brings the Bible story of Joseph into the song perfectly. It' just about the most beautifully "Christian" song I've ever heard!

Had a friend out west who went to Nashville as he too wanted to be a Star and get a recording contract and he talked about this fellow musician who went out of her way to help him as much as she could - given the struggle. When he came back we'd be jamming and "Stuff" and he talked about her. None of us back then ever her of Dolly Parton and forgot about her and his shot at stardom in Nashville as time went on, but, But, BUT One day watchin' something or other she was on and we all had a, OMG moment - It was her, the girl Jake always talked about. That was like fifteen years later, but you know, her soul shined thru.

    Thank you so much for your videos, Rev Ed! I am a 67yo recovering catholic who, with the exception of a short exploration of the Bible over 20 years ago, has resisted any type of connection with a higher power for years. I tend to live by the Golden Rule, not glorifying any Supreme being. My 98yo mother claims to be a " devout" Catholic, but in my eyes, she is a sorry example of Christianity. During my 16-year marriage, my now ex-husband verbally & physically abused me and our children. At one point, much to my mistaken relief, he became "born again." I thought our marriage would improve, but he merely used the Christian philosophy of the Man is the Head of the Household as another excuse to mistreat us. I can site many other examples of my experiences with supposed Christians, but I think you get the picture. I find myself drawn to your videos... maybe for the wrong reason. I tend to use Bible teachings to prove how unchristian-like so many professed Christians truly are. In one of your recent videos, you spoke of this attitude being judgemental, basically saying, it is not up to us to judge others. I get it, but I have a difficult time reconciling this idea with my past experiences. I'll continue watching your videos.... maybe I'll get there eventually. Thank you, again... in my eyes, you are a great example of a kind and loving, true Christian.

    Waaayyyy back when I was in the US Navy and stationed on a ship out of San Diego (32nd street base), I'd often go and have a beer or two at one of the many C&W bars that lined the streets of National City -- just outside the base. It was there in the early 1970s that I first heard Dolly on the jukebox singing "Coat of Many Colors." After a second hearing, I had to be careful because that song would have me sobbing.
    When I found out she was also the writer of the song, I was awestruck. The story of Joseph has always been one of the most moving to me -- and for me, Dolly has been a very deep and beautiful soul. I often like to include songs in my posts -- and I'm glad I could include this one.

    • @yabits
      @yabits Před měsícem

      I would like to dovetail another song-story onto the one above -- because the details just came to me this week -- by coincidence.
      The musician it involves is (was) another spiritual soul -- George Harrison. When the Beatles first became huge in America -- in 1964 -- I read an interview with George where he said he was looking forward to all the money success would bring. The money came, and George would grow into a much deeper and wiser person.
      And this week, I read the story of the band in 1963 -- already taking off in the UK -- and being given a few weeks off from touring and recording -- and young George deciding to visit his sister in America -- in very RURAL Benton, Illinois -- since she had married an American and was living there. It would be the last vacation in George's life where he could be completely free and anonymous.
      From accounts, he LOVED the small town and rural America -- and it so happened the town had a first-rate record store that he hung out in. He bought many LPs and singles -- one by an obscure "northern soul" artist -- James Ray -- with the A-side a song by Irving Berlin, called "Always." But it was the B-side that completely entranced young Harrison. Decades later, the world would come to know this song >> "I've Got My Mind Set On You."
